I'm 12 days post-op. Today is only my 2nd time attempting to down a protein shake. I did try a few days ago and I was hit with a horrible wave of nausea and diarrhea almost instantly after sipping the shake. This feeling last about 2 ours after I drink this protein. It's the same protein that I was using pre-op for my liquid diet and it was great. I know that things change post-op but I'm already struggling getting my 64oz. in, and now that my protein is giving me so much strife I'm really getting frustrated. I should say that this protein is milk based and I'm thinking that this might be the culprit in my extreme nausea and diarrhea after drinking this. If anyone has any suggestions on proteins that aren't milk based and preferably a fruity flavor. I have chocolate and vanilla and just the mere thought of it is making me want to hurl again. Please help!!!

I experienced the exact same thing! I just didn't drink them for a few weeks. Just focus on getting your liquids in. Also, try greek yogurt-- it is very high in protein-- I eat the chobani brand, but leave the fruit on the bottom. After about a month, I was able to drink a shake only if I mixed a banana and extra sugar free chocolate syrup with it. People here have mixed feelings about the banana, but it works for me. Check out this thread that I started with some good links to non-milk protein alternatives. weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=talk&thread=1369&page=1#19168

What Bryan said :-) Try not to overstress, you're very new. And yes, could be the milk-based protein, I had to eliminate milk products, cut back on whole milk cheese, cottage cheese, was killing me. Check out the link Bryan posted. Isopure makes clear fruit drink and fruit flavored protein for shakes, a little pricier but good taste.
I had a feeding tube this time, so getting in both protein and water was easier. But a trick I used during my first surgery was buying fruit flavored sugar free jello and adding my vanilla protein to that - orange was my favorite, tasted like a dreamsicle. Scoop of vanilla protein, 1 tsp of SF jello, 8oz of water, and shake it, don't need a blender. You can make lemon, lime, strawberry, raspberry drinks and using water instead of milk, they're thinner and easier to knock back.
My If you like soup, you can make chicken broth and cook eggs into it for a nice egg drop soup, or I pureed tofu into tomato soup, so I had some savory too. This will pass and for sure you need to make sure you are hydrated, it will start getting better as you head into weeks 3 and 4.

I second (or is it third?) the suggestion to try Isopure Ready-to-Drink Zero Carb beverages. They are whey protein isolate drinks, with 40 grams of protein per 20 ounce bottle. They come in these fruit flavors: Grape, Apple/Melon, Punch, Raspberry, Pineapple/Orange/Banana, Mango/Peach.
You could also try Syntrax Nectars; they are fruit-flavored whey protein isolate powders that mix easily with water. You can get a 13-flavor sample pack for $13 by calling: (866) 333-7403 x803

Please help!!! If it's milk based, that's likely the issue. For now, just focus on HYDRATION. Give yourself a rest from the protein for a day or three and then try again with another kind. You might try Isopure Zero Carb premade, as it's clear (but still whey isolate, no collagen). It's pricey for long term use, but to get something in, it could be useful. As you heal, you will tolerate more stuff and can consider trying other supplements. Or maybe you'll be like me and be ULTRA motivated to get protein from food ASAP .
