I just had DS surgery on 1/4/12. I am finally not feeling like my insides are going to explode every time I have to use the restroom.
I need help from all the vets in regards to how I am suppose to get 60-90 grams of protein each day. I am having so much trouble with this.
I finally found a protein powder that I can handle but I would have to drink three of them a day to hit 90 grams. Does anyone have a good high protein recipe book or any advice on what I should do???
Looking forward to getting some advice!!
One more thing...can you not drink soda or carb water ever again?

You are 3 weeks out. Focus on HYDRATION first, protein second.
You can try Greek Yogurt and add a little sugar-free jam.
egg salad, tuna salad, soups, like egg drop or hot and sour if it sits well.
Mushy, high protein stuff.
The protein shakes act as protein AND liquids so you are killing 2 birds there.
Look in the Recipes section and you can pull out things that will be mushy and sit well on your healing tummy. Like the Fluff recipe.
It won't be too much longer and you will be able to eat more and also add more solid things but for right now, I just wouldn't worry about the protein as much as the liquids.
Good luck!

I'm only 7.5 weeks out so giving info on protein definitely isn't my area of expertise. However, I can tell you that the only way I get my water in is by drinking carbonated water--it doesn't upset my stomach and i burp out the gas. You're a month behind me--when I was 2 weeks out, my surgeon cleared me for sugar free carbonated water. But at that point, when I drank it it made me too full and uncomfortable. But within the past 2 weeks i guess, I have really loved drinking it and it really helps me get in the 64 ounces. Good luck and hang in there!!!!

Send me your e-mail address and I will send you my collection of food ideas for DSers that I have collected over the last couple of years. there are some ideas for those just out from surgery as well. You don't need to concentrate so much on protein right now as with staying hydrated. Congratulations on your surgery.

It's very easy to become dehydrated at this stage and it is an awful thing to deal with. So hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Next you can look at getting in your protein. A reasonable rule of thumb is the 30-60-90 rule. That is 30 grams of protein per day by 30 days out from surgery, 60 grams per day by 60 days out, and 90 grams by 90 days.

I know it's been said before, but it's worth repeating...
Hydration is the most important thing right now. Protein will come as you can tolerate it. Your body has stores for a while.
The other thing I wanted to say is to try different things. I noticed someone said that carbonated water helps her. For me, I couldn't tolerate anything carbonated for a few months. I drank a lot of crystal light and kept trying protein shakes that I could handle. I didn't like them, but just kept sipping.
Lastly...be patient. It just keeps getting better!

For me, it was crystal light or G2. Never plain water-- I always throw it back up!
As for protein, keep drinking your shakes & get in as much as you can. I wasn't cleared for food at your point, but when I wasi started with Greek yogurt & ricotta cheese & cottage cheese. All easy things to digest.
Also, relax & take care of yourself!

As others noted. Hydration first at this point. Many follow the 30, 60, 90 day rule: 30 grams protein by 30 days 60 grams protein by 60 days 90 grams protein by 90 days
Your body should have some stores of protein that will help you at this point. Hope your healing process goes smoothly. SH

I did read on another thread where someone was putting protein powder in their soup broth to boost the protein value so that might be 1 way to get more protein in as you go along without it being as filling.
I know lots of DSers CAN drink carbonated beverages after surgery but never knew you could do it so soon after surgery. Im a Diet Coke-a-holic so honestly, this gives me hope in case Im jonesing 2 weeks out. Thanks for posting this question!
Hopefully nobody will come in and tell me Diet Coke is the one thing you cant drink ever again lol.

I drink a ton of Powerade Zero. It doesn't have any calories or sugar, and the G2 does. Sometimes it upsets my stomach. I drink some carbonated water every once in a while, but not a lot.

Ricotta cheese is my favorite go-to, especially as a new post op. It packs 28g in one cup, although you'll be lucky if you can eat half of that right now. You can mix it with SF pudding or add splenda/vanilla if you like things sweet, or you can add some tomato sauce and melt cheese over top to make it savory. It's just magical like that.
My true savior (and torture) to get the protein in was something called ProSTAT64. I got it online, and it packed 15g in one teensy tiny ounce of syrupy yuck. Now, it did taste like monkey-ass, but to me, all of the other drinks did too, so this was the object that just "sucked less". I could pound down 2oz for a 30g protein punch out of a shot glass while holding my nose.

Definitely the hydration first. Can't add to what the others said, except I didn't get to 50gr/protein/day till I was 6 mos. out. Everyone is different. Some get there quickly, others don't. I had to drink a shake for the first 2 years to ensure I got enough.
My surgeons said carbonated drinks should wait. I had one at 9 mos. out. Now I have 1 diet soda/week.

Baked fish and refried beans with cheese. About the only things I ate those first couple of weeks.

I hated the taste of water, I just could not get passed the smell of it for the first 2 weeks. So I drank lots of flat sugarfree coke. I'd rather had pepsi but we where in Brazil and couldn't find the pepsi. So room temperature flat coke and coffee and tea worked good for me.

I was able to drink carbonated water from pretty early out and it never had ill effects on me.

I used warm drinks like protein beef broth packet mixes, and protein hot chocolate. All my fluids early on had protein to meet both requirements. The beef broth was the easiest to get down because it was a thin consistency.
Carbonated SF sodas were allowed if flat, free of bubbles, not sure which week, but may be after week 6. I loved SF Root Beer, but realized it took up too much room early on, couldn't get enough protein in with it on board. Now I enjoy the fruit protein drink mixes like lemonade, and orange. Swiss Miss has a new 25 cal SF packet hot chocolate, I add Unjury unflavored protein.
When I was a few weeks out from surgery I was able to drink and eat more when standing, rather than sitting. Keeping my stomach vertical helped, and walking around the kitchen moved the swallowed air up and out, allowing me to continue eating or drinking and fit more in.
You can find lots of protein drinks- hot and cold on line:
Bariatric Choice Diet Direct Unjury Protein (unflavored, add to your own broth, or soups, or shakes, small packets are good for travel) Syntrax Nector- unflavored, and lots of fruit, vanilla, choco, coffee... lots of great flavors. Small packets, or large tubs.
