Today, I've been feeling extremely overwhelmed about the fact that I'm basically starting from the ground up and completely re-learning how to live my entire life! Technically, I'm not even born yet since my surgery's next month!
It's the little things...I'm overwhelmed with all of the bookmarks I need to read/reread, the fact that I need to re-read dsfacts.com, plus every other thing I've encountered in the last 7 months about the DS!
And the big things...I'm fired up and anxious over the fact that my PCP ordered some of my labs today but not all because they're "too expensive, too weird, unnecessary, blah, blah". I said "weird" but that was the gist of it. I may end up paying for said "weird" labs myself from a local lab because no one will order them and/or insurance won't cover them. Hell, I don't know if insurance will cover today's labs! Did I mention that my veins are the smallest veins on the planet?! Small veins=labs will be a pain in the rear for the REST OF MY LIFE!
AND...I'm plagued with the thought that I will go broke from vites and protein and be living on the streets with a big ass shopping cart of Champion Pure Whey protein with nothing else to show for! Oh, and the scariest fear of all, the idea that I will succumb to the WORST weakness of my life, CARBS, and the surgery will only have made life worse because I'll be dead in a month's time from eating hundreds of grams of carbs a day!!
I really don't know what the hell I'm about to get myself into and the million dollar question remains: Am I really mentally ready for this?

For fear of sounding like my pshycology classes in college were for nothing.

Des. CHILL THE FUCK OUT about reading/rereading and go take a walk. Get your heart rate up and your muscles tired. You need to learn how to do THAT, too. Turn OFF your computer and go do something physical.
You are NOT going to have everything memorized before surgery day. And even if you did, trust me, the drugfest and the fasting will send a bunch of it right OUT of your memory.

Okay, getting off the computer for a spell. Bye!

Listen to EN, please. All the reading in the world does not equate to living with the DS. In the immediate post-op period you are not going to be in danger of malnutrition nor will you being needing to have labs drawn. Your immediate focus will be on hydration and movement to prevent embolisms. If we all waited until we were 100% sure of every stinking thing, none of us would have gotten any surgery at all. You have picked a good surgeon and you've established relationships with others who have had the surgery. There 's not really anything else to do except quit reading and take a walk.

What are the labs you think you need that he didn't order?
And for me, I was always a hard stick for blood draws - until I had my DS. Inches of fat melted off your arms will make your veins much easier to find.

I actually freaked out more when I first got approved than I am now (surgery day is Tuesday). I feel like I should be freaking out more now. It's the liquid diet... I'm too hungry to freak I'm sure I'll be freaking out quite a bit Monday night though!

But you'll be a THIN homeless woman pushing your grocery cart around town. And just think...all the women on the street offering "favors" for crack will be amazed that YOU are offering "favors" for nutritional supplements.

Yeah, my brain was about to have a meltdown last evening. Luckily, I took a 24-hour break from the computer and even had some fun with friends during that time! Let me say, it was much needed. I figure as long as I've got the basics down, I'll be okay. I just reach a boiling point sometimes and have to take a step back and regroup.

I started having racing thoughts about a month to 3 weeks before surgery--what if, what if, what if. It's totally normal. By the time i was a week from surgery, I'd learned to let go and just focus on getting things in order before I had to disappear for a week at the hospital. You'll be fine. I'm sure you've done enough research to know this.
Hugs, Sheri
