Gross, I know...sorry. I've got the VitaLady's pre-packaged DS vites. I've noticed after taking the morning dose (with 5 iron capsules), my tummy feels unwell, and I burp a lot of yucky tasting burps. I'm waiting on my script of Proferrin Forte (thought it was ES, but it's Forte)....but will I still feel the same way after changing iron pills? Is it just an inevitable side effect of the iron?

Yep, I got the nasty burps too from the VL Iron pills but no tummy issues. I have always been sensitive to the taste and smell of vitamins but I did get used to them and now the one vitamin I dread the most is the B complex. Man, that one is just yucky!
I don't have funky tasting or smelling burps with the Proferrin Forte but I still take the full dose of VL Iron and then a Proferrin at lunch.

I don't have any burping or bad tummy feelings with my iron. I take one chew a day. Tastes good, like a choco carmel with a bit of citrus, not too sweet. This is not a dry tablet to chew, its like "Starburst" candy- chewy texture. Their calcium chews are great too, easy to take, like candy. Satisfies my cravings for sweets.
Bariatric Advantage SF Iron Chewy Bite, 30mg, with vitamin C, Chocolate Raspberry Truffle flavor. I take it just before bed, far away from all my other supplements.

I had the exact same problem (tummy really unhappy and nasty tasting burps!) with VL's iron...I have some of the chewable passion fruit tablets from Bariatric Advantage but even those give me nasty burps...

With the Tender w/calcium, yup nasty burp. I find that if I eat something with it no burps. So I will eat meat or fruit. I also take the Proferrin and no burps with that ever.

Any Iron will usually give you some nasty backwash. That is Iron. I usually find it is less with VL Tender Iron than the stuff you buy from the store shelves. Eat with it...

I too have the vasoline tasting burps but I avoided the tummy issues by starting with one pill for a few days, then two pills, etc. I can take all 5 now with just a few burps that aren' t too awful Actually, the burping was actually worse when I first started with just one pill. I guess like everything else, you just adjust. And I agree about the B complex vites being the worst. I try to get capsules because there's no taste like there is with a tablet.

So, when I started taking the morning Vitalady dosage (that's the one with the iron) I too found that I came back up with lots and lots of nasty burps. So, what I realized recently, is that if i take a HUGE gulp of water with all of the pills at once, they go down and I don't taste them at all!!! I don't know if this will work for everyone, but for sure, it's worked for me with all morning, afternoon, evening, and bedtime doses. A really big gulp of water + all pills at once = no burping nastiness. By the way, the lunchtime vites also did the same thing to me until I drank more water with them. Good luck!

Oh yeah I'm right there with you, nasty burps, sick on the stomach and some nights I even get the heaves. Am looking for an alternative at the moment. Hideous things.

Switched to Proferrin, VL Tenders were killing me, made me burpy and nauseous. Really was trying to be a trooper and get them down but just couldn't.

If I take my iron with water, I burp horribly. I now take my iron with a small glass or orange juice and I have no burping at all!

I take several types of iron, and while the tummy feels fine, the burps taste like burnt bacon. Could be worse, but a few bites of fruit seems to eliminate that for me.

Add me to the list. I had to switch to Proferrin because of the "dead things" burps from the regular Tenders. Horrid. I sent the rest that made me burp to MajorMom to donate to someone in need.

OK, so I guess I typed my last response too soon. This morning, as usually, I took my iron with a HUGE gulp of water. But it ended up coming back with that nasty rubbery taste and SMELL until about noon today. OMG, I so have to find a solution to that. I don't know why it went away for a while but now that it's back, I'm pissed.

I'm going to HAVE to try something else. This nasty feeling that not only makes me burp but also give me terrible heart burn and stomach burn isn't going to work for me. I have to take care of 2 kids each morning and I feel totally incapacitated after taking that first dose. All I can think to do is to reverse the order of my vites and start from evening all the way through morning and hope I can sleep off the nasty ironess.

bugirll I had checked out iron bisglycinate some time ago, found this site with info about it- thebypassedlife.com/ferrous-glycinate-chelate/It is an RNY blog, but I know I'd found other sites saying that the iron biglycinates weren't the best for DS patients either. Also its not what Vitalady sells or suggests, and thats good enough for me. I'd stick with whatever she's selling, consider the Proferrin, expensive but worth it. Do a little research, you may come up with more info on it.

I would like to know how the bypass made a difference, what the mechanism is. I will do more research. Thanks for showing me this.

Vitalady also sells this: Cypress Iron brand (Polysaccharide-150mg Elemental). How is that different or the same?

Add me to the list of people who can't tolerate Vitalady's tender iron. I've tried taking it a million different ways - with food, without food, with big gulps of a drink, with small sips, etc. Nothing worked. If I can't stand it as a pre-op, I can't imagine that I'll be able to take it after my DS (if I ever get to have a DS, that is). I'm terrified of needles, but I'd rather have iron infusions than take those damn tender iron capsules.
Shelli
PS - I don't have any problems with proferrin. Hopefully that'll be enough to keep my labs okay.

I'm still taking it because I know that being deficient can really make a person sick but first chance I get I"m going to my doctor to see if I can get the infusions before i become deficient. I took them today and had some good luck--it barely came up on me. But the past few days have been horrible with those capsules!!

Someone on FB suggested polysaccharide iron as a good alternative. I'm going to investigate!

I take the Tender Iron capsules at bedtime, and I eat a small apple after swallowing them, but I still get the nasty burps throughout the night. They're awful. I had been taking Proferrin, but it wasn't keeping my ferritin up, so I had to switch to these Tenders. I never had icky burps with the Proferrin.

Tender iron burps. Yucky. ::shudder::
Proferrin didn't do that to me. Neither does poly iron.
Now if I could just find some solution to the B-Complex burps.

Thanks for this thread too as Im probably gonna have the vitaburps too....I already do when I take anything like fish oil, garlic, etc. Something to look forward to!
Also, I wouldnt worry too much about this being a "gross" subject...this is a group of people that talks about pudding poos and paint peeling farts for pages on end lol.

I didn't like the tender irons. If I remember right, they're alfalfa-based or something like that. I always chewed mine before swallowing, but just couldn't stomach them. I now do Proferrin Forte without any complications.

Count me as one who also had the motor oil burps from VL's iron. Proferrin did great. Neither one could keep my iron levels up, but that was due to uterine fibroids in concert with the DS. Ended up with infusions. No big deal (for me).
I swear, it tasted like I licked the engine block of my old '74 Mustang (loved that car, black with sunroof and vinyl top - leaked oil like a sieve).
Hugs, Ratkity

The Tender Iron caused reflux for me, so I switched to Proferrin. Expensive, but my levels have been good so it's worth it.

I now do Proferrin Forte without any complications. Steve, how many Porferrin Forte do you take a day? I have started them, but am not sure of the dose I should be taking (as a minimum...I'll tweak it after my first set of post-op labs next month). My doctor will adjust the dose as I require, but he only has me taking one a day (this is my PCP, not my surgeon, and he's not DS knowledgable....yet ;D )
