Hello all,
I'm wondering what hunger feels like for everyone. I'm not sure if what I feel is normal... Basically, I feel a tightness, soreness, and slight nausea. I kind of feel like this after I eat too, so it's hard to tell when to eat again. I don't want to be overstuffing my stomach, but with all the liquids and the 4 small "meals" a day, I feel like I might be. Here is what I ate yesterday:
Protein shake with banana 3 oz greek yogurt 2 oz cheese cubes 2 chicken thighs (not at once) 32 oz G2 Gatorade 32 oz water
Advice?

At one month out, you are dong great with your food and fluids. Try to increase your hydration a bit, though. I think what you are describing is pretty much on target for hunger signals. After about a year out, my huger signals were back to normal. Our bodies adapt and change continually with the DS, from what I can tell. What we think to expect one month will change the next. There is a lot of trial and error involved in this process, but what rewards it holds!

I noticed hunger pains starting around 6 weeks to 2 months. Especially at night! Now at 3.5 months out, my stomach will growl exactly like it did pre- DS. And I am hungry every 3-4 hours. I just grab string cheese, greek yogurt, or a hard boiled egg. You are only a month out and there is still so much healing going on. It sounds like your are doing very well. The questions and concern are very normal. And then time flies and in a couple months, you will have to remind yourself that you HAVE to eat cuz you will be so busy doing other things and NOT worrying about how things are working in your body! And that, my friend, is a wonderful place to be! It will be here for you before you know it!

I'm 6 weeks out, and just starting to experience a real hunger sensation again. I had two experiences where I threw up because I took that extra bite because I wasn't sure if I was full yet, not a big deal, came right back up with a cough. Eating smaller and frequently is a good idea, as my surgeon Dr. K pointed out, better to under eat and then go back for more, rather than the other way around. As people here always point out, we have limited stomach real estate; we are trying to hit numbers for our fluids, protein, fats per day, how we each spread them out over the course of the day is subjective to us.

Your foods look excellent. You're still so early out, the pain / nausea are common for people still healing.
When I was at your stage, and feeling about the same way, my surgeon recommended I eat peanut butter on a cracker, about once an hour. He said that the gumminess of it would settle my stomach, and stay in there for awhile. He was right. When I did that, no more nausea whatsoever.

Post op it took me a while to figure out what my stomach was trying to tell me since hunger didn't feel the same at first. It is a little different for everyone, but in my case I didn't feel hunger or discomfort at all when I needed food, but I'd feel VERY weak and low on energy, and I would take that as a sign to eat something. I also had a difficult time knowing when I was full. What I did feel was a but of pressure in the stomach area when I was full, if I kept eating after sensing this pressure feeling *THEN* my stomach would protest with a LOT of pain and sometimes nausea. So I would eat and stop when I felt the pressure in the stomach, then I'd wait until the pressure feeling subsided before eating or drinking any more. It was like my stomach was so busy healing and getting used to the changes that it had forgotten how to communicate with me. It wasn't until month 3 that I started feeling regular hunger pangs again. I still don't feel fullness the way I used to, and I have to watch out for the pressure feeling and the warning cramp if I go a bite too far. It sounds like you're able to eat a good amount of protein so far, keep up the good work!

I had a very strange "full" sensation for a while there. I would feel "hollow" like I hadn't eaten at all, when I was eating. I soon learned that it was my "full" warning. Some people say they burp or hiccup when they are "full"....I felt like I hadn't eaten at all! Now at 2 months out (on the 28th) I now feel the "normal" full sensations. No more hollow feeling.

Yes, that IS a good one the PB and cracker, I got old fashioned saltines, and it really helped a lot.

I am right about where you are too. I am drinking LOTS of plain water, which I know is good, but recently I've been craving carbonation (diet coke specifically). I'm not going to do it because my surgeon said not to.

I think you won't enjoy the effects of carbonation Later on...yeah...now...urrrgghhh.... I like the great value brand sugar free drink mixes, specifically the grape and peach...might want to try those... At two plus a little months out...I have to be honest, I still love eating food but hate how it makes me feel. I feel like that's all I do is figure out what I'm going to eat and then eat then recover from eating...only to start it all over again. I probably need to go back to protein coffees but those filled me up so much too....I think it's just time... I've been cleared for salads and raw veggies as long as they are really small and chewed well and slow but I haven't had the room by the time I get the protein and liquid in. This too shall pass

Hi Bry, The first 2-3 months my stomach hurt when empty, and after eating any little bit of solid food. Drinking shakes, broth, hot chocolate all with protein felt so much better. I found sitting down for meals made the pain worse, but standing to eat or drink was painless. Now in my 5th month, sitting for meals is fine. Many changes happen all along the way, don't get discouraged, improvements will come soon.
