The subject pretty much says it all except, how do you know you're eating too much fat? Do BMs change? Do you feel bad? What are the indications? I don't think I'm eating too much now just want to know what the signs are in case I do get to that point at some time. Thanks for your input!

Did you ever use Alli diet pills? An over abundance of fat will do the same- oil slicks, and frequent trips to the bathroom. Works great for constipation!!!
I never felt bad physically, but felt guilty eating fat since I have been on a low fat diet since I was 7. Pork chops are safe for me, and chicken wings. Bacon, a whole meal is 5 pc thick cut, 5 g protein a slice. My tummy is so small, I couldn't over do the fat. 5 pc bacon is all I have room for at 4 1/2 mo out from surgery. I cook meat with olive oil. We stay away from fats that are solid at room temperature for heart health, and artery clogging properties, like real butter, and lard, and beef. Chicken and fish are best for heart health. We do use butter occasionally. Salad dressings are good dips and toppings for veggies. Don't use low fat dressings, they have higher carbs. check your dressings all are different.

What Sandra says. Plus take a look at your labs. If your cholesterol doesn't tank then you're eating to much fat. My good cholesterol is way low and I do need to try to raise that by eating more "good" fats.

Different fats have different effects too. Bacon, no problem, butter no problem, olive and vegetable oils, great.
That crap they put on popcorn at movie theaters will send me to the mens room before the previews are over and I only eat small amounts of popcorn. I have taken to sneaking in a sandwich baggie of my own dry popcorn from home.

My good cholesterol is way low and I do need to try to raise that by eating more "good" fats. Along these lines what is considered tanking? I have always had low cholesterol and now it's heading lower. Below 40 last I knew for total cholesterol. Good was below the levels they measure, bad was in the 30's.

When you poop out a half-cup of oil on a daily basis, then I'd say you might be eating too much fat. I don't have any discomfort from eating any fat, even when I overdo it. It's just makes BMs a little less... what's the word I'm looking for... Less "aesthetic" and less "tidy".

Thanks all, re the heads up on cholesterol levels and labs. However, we don't do labs every day or every week to test/monitor the levels. I guess I'm looking for some immediate indications.
Good vs bad fats, I understand. My last readings were well within the good range with the exception of HDL (good measure) which was a little on the low side but, not alarming.
So, are there any immediate indications... I get that an urgent trip to the bathroom or a few are an indication but that could also be other things besides fat... is there something unique to too much fat as indicator?

I can only speak for myself, others will have different experiences. I haven't noticed any fat exclusive warning signs in my bowels if I've eaten too much fat. Sometimes it gurgles a little more than usual if I've got a sizable amount of oil ready to pass- but not always, I ate the skin off half a peking duck and my intestines didn't make a peep. But in my case, nothing painful, strange, or unusually urgent with having to go to the rest room. I just poop out the oil, it's not pretty but it reminds me that the malaborbtion is in full force and that's good news The only time I had any intestinal discomfort was during the first few pre-op months when my intestines were healing and adjusting to the new configuration.

The perfect fat level gives a marvelous pudding poop that requires no straining and irritates no asshole. Ahhhhhh almost as good as sex.....

Great post to click on while I eat lunch I love this stuff, I'm glad you posted, yet another bookmark for me, awesome feedback. I just got back from my 2nd post-op visit with my surgeon, and we had a nice long chat about all of this. It's definitely personal/individual. I'm not quite 6 weeks out, so this is still evolving for me, but what I think is going to work best for me is mixing it up a little. Full-fat food kinda kills me, plus from a taste perspective, it's too much for me. I genuinely like cleaner eating, though delighted to incorporate some guilt-free fat So. I'll stick with chicken, turkey breast, chicken wings, lean ground turkey, good cuts of steaks/red meat, pork chops/tenderloin, tuna, hard boiled eggs, fish, soy chicken patties, non-processed deli meat (everything tastes salty to me now!) 2% cottage cheese, modest amount of bacon and cheese. For condiments, cooking oils (olive, sesame, peanut, canola), avocado, olives, butter (especially to cook with, the olive oil/butter mix), almonds, cashews, peanut butter, almond butter, low-fat mayo, half-half (though I'll happily bake my quiche with cream)

It's not all necessarily hormonal, KWIM? Dry eyes as well. Also dry hair and nails, too little fat in your blood, dropping fat soluble vite levels despite massive supplementation.

I was just going by the dry skin- the backs of my hands and forearms tend to be a decent indicator for me, but that's still not that reliable. This makes a lot of sense. Too much fat? Not possible! Lol jk. On a serious note, I personally will take absolute full advantage of eating things packed with fat because I personally suffer from constapation (which developed after surgery) so fats are an absolute help when it comes to my "bad days". But its important to pay attention to how much you can personally handle, sometimes something you think was just enough fat might make your body react in a negative way which could result in frequent bathroom trips and intense oil slicks. But its always a nice reminder that my DS is still kicking butt Oh yea! And I'd like to add that I am absolutely 100% guilt free eating my FULL fatty foods <3 -Jessy

If you're not eating much in the way of carbs, fat will NOT have a negative effect on cholesterol. Even for those with no WLS at all, a diet low in carbs and high in fat often lowers cholesterol, not increases it. Speaking in terms of general health, fat is not bad at all when carbs are limited - it's really the carbs that are bad news. The only reason I would ever limit fat intake, even saturated (another fat that got a bad rep for NO GOOD REASON), is if you were having loose/oily poop issues.
