Is an upper GI series different than an upper EGD. I was just told my Dr. K's office that I need one done although it says on form that he would do it when I arrive in CA. According my insurance's website I had Ok correction: According to my insurance website I had Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy including esophagus, stomach, and either the duodenum and/or jejunum as appropriate; diagnostic, with or without collection of specimen(s) by brushing or washing (separate procedure). Is this an upper GI Series or is this an EGD?I called the office he wasn't there so they can't tell me if this this is acceptable but Dr. K is not there. I just need to know if now I need to scramble and find a GI to perform upper GI series if this is needed.
Also does anyone know of any affordable long term hotels or corporate apts in the area?

No, it is not the same thing.
An Upper GI is an X-Ray series in which you drink contrast (like barium), and they take pictures of your upper digestive tract from the outside.
An endoscopy (EGD) is a scope. You are sedated and they insert a long narrow tube down your throat and take pictures from the inside.
I cant speak to your insurance comments (not sure I understand what they are), but if Dr K orders one or the other I dont see why they wouldn't pay, if you have the doctor's order. You might need prior approval, but his office should know how to take care of that.

I only had the EGD. I just called my primary care doc who is calling the GI dept and has sent over a referral for me to the the upper GI series done. I hope it doesn't take too long because I know a lot of time they are back logged. Thanks for explaining.

Never mind. Worried for nothing. I called my PCP and they expedited it so I will have an upper GI series done on Tuesday.

I had both done.
The EGD bothered the hell out of my throat for a day (didn't eat hardly drank) but other then that they are painless.

Dr. K was my surgeon. He ordered both test right before my revision. I flew out to CA for my initial consult as I wanted to meet with him first prior to having my surgery. He did the EGD himself (he prefers to see for himself what he will be dealing with) and I had the upper GI at the same time.
You will do fine. Those last minute tests can be nerve racking…. ;-)
If you call Dr. K's office they can tell you of hotels in the area they have a deal with for out of town patients. I had a ton of frequent stay points built up from traveling I do for work so I paid for much of my stay with these. But Dr. K's staff should be able to help you.
Good Luck. SH

The hotel Dr. K's office recommends is running a deal for $69/night, or something like that. At least they were just recently. I stayed at the Travelodge in East Pasadena which was about 9 miles away and a very quick car ride. For a single it was $51/night and for a double it was $55/night. This was in November though so I really don't know what the rates are now. I went through Priceline and got that deal. I also used Advantage for my rental car because they were about $100 cheaper than any other deal out there. I had to go through the Advantage website for that.

DO NOT GET THE EGD DONE AT HOME BEFORE YOU LEAVE WITHOUT CALLING DR. K'S OFFICE AND ASKING THEM!
It is my recollection that Dr. K is very particular about this part, and will want to do it HIMSELF. Don't waste time, money, unnecessary radiation, etc.
