It is week 4 post op and the strained muscle is not as painful anymore but not completely healed. I feel like shit! My taste buds have taken a bad turn and it seems nothing is eatable. So now I am eating like I just got our of the hospital. Same with drinking, I have been pushing the fluids but I am only getting 50+ oz. I think I need to go to hospital and get a bag of fluids and maybe I start feeling better to do other things. I wish I could rewind to before I strained myself and all was going well.
Any other suggestions?

Hi Danni, You sound just like me at the same stage. I drank all my protein for 3 months because my tummy felt best with less solids of any kind. I found warm drinks were the easiest to drink, protein beef broth tasted the best. My taste changed away from sweets, and sweet drinks were metallic tasting for a few months, now taste back to normal, starting at 3 months. I'm 5 months out now, still prefer to drink my proteins to be able to get enough fluids in a day. Don't drink too close to bedtime, doing this to reach my fluid requirements caused painful bladder spasms.
Try to get out for walks and some sun, helps with "SAD" from being inside recovering, could be making you feel down. Pick up your spirits with any kind of activity. I walked the stores slowly leaning on the shopping carts. Helped me mentally and physically. Hope you feel better!!

Getting more water is going to be CRUCIAL for you. Dehydration is no joke, and it seems to set off a chain-reaction of spiral of feeling poorly, can't drink, feel more poorly. I think trusting your instincts about getting some fluids may be correct. At the very least, push more fluids if you can.

Danni, If you've fallen behind on fluids, it's nearly impossible to catch up by drinking. You will need that IV bag or two.
It's normal to feel tired and down at this point. You're still recovering from MAJOR surgery, and you're eating less. But if you feel you're dehydrated, nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution and going to the hospital. It's pretty easy to get fluids there.
How's your urine? You should be drinking until it's clear, or almost clear.

***HUGGLES**** I hope getting a couple bags at the ER will make your outlook better immediately. Dehydration makes me sick as a dog in no time flat, even at subclinical levels.
Looking around eagerly for updates on how you're feeling!! Do you still have my phone number?

Sorry you are struggling....I'm struggling too actually! We had our surgeries on the same day...I think Im getting close to enough liquids but I am doing SO BAD with my protein and vitamins! I am trying to cut myself some slack on the vitamins, I just feel like I literally don't have the space in my stomach to swallow them and I have a hard time swallowing the big ones even when I break them in half....I'm trying to be gentle yet firm with myself. I don't want to end up dead!!!

If you feel dehydrated and like you can't catch up on fluids...it's probably because you're dehydrated and can't catch up on fluids. Go. Call your doctor (PCP or surgeon); it might be something they are set up to handle with a same-day office visit. If not then go to the ER.

I am in ER getting fluids but it took them two hours to see me! I hate my local hospital. I was having some abdominal discomfort. Like a all over tummy ache. I started running a fever and took Tylenol to keep it down.

Any other symptoms? Talk to the surgeon about that and be sure you have someone in Missoula alerted. I am a tiny bit nervous now. *goes off to MT highway webcams to watch and fret about weather and road conditions*

I remember well the 'food tastes like crap' stage. It was absolutely the worst part of recovery for me. Thank goodness it only lasted a couple of weeks. I could not drink any protein drinks and I started to panic but I am happy to say that it isn't a problem anymore. This too shall pass...
What I am concerned about is your temperature. It might be nothing or it might be the early warning signs of an infection. I think if the ER staff knew better, they would have done some blood work on you while you were there to check for infection. Please continue to monitor this and get back to the ER if your temperature rises or if you experience increasing pain.

Sorrry you're having to deal with this, hope you get past it soon!
