HI everyone. Just checking n after surgery. I think things are going well, with one exception. I have not passed gas yet. I am having liquid bowel movements and burping, but nothing more. I am getting two protein shakes, water soup broth ans jello in, and think I'm doing pretty good. Pain for the most part feels like gas pain. I still weigh almost 10 lbs more than when I went in to surgery, I suppose that is from fluid and healing. I walk, sip, and sleep the day away.
Thanks,
Katherine

Hi Katherine,
We are all so different after surgery. It sounds to me like everything is kind of normal, I took a while before I started passing gas (and I haven't stopped since.) You're actually getting in more protein than I was able to at first so that's good. You will start feeling better very soon. Was your surgery open or closed? I know that also has something to do with healing time and gas.
Hang in there, Kelly

My surgery was closed. I think I prefer open surgery. The gas bubbling around is painful and I want it out!

Congrats Katherine, sounds like you are doing well. Best way to work out the surgery gas is walk walk walk...it's not going to necessarily come out the way you're talking. It's in the belly cavity and can travel up into your shoulders and elsewhere. I found a cold moist towel on the area of pain helped disperse a particularly nasty pocket, but walking is the only way to truly work it out of your system. Sounds like you're doing great - pay particular attention to getting fluids in - I thought I had no trouble then got behind and it's tough to catch up when you can't guzzle! And yup...weight will start falling once your swelling goes down from healing - keep on going! Best of luck!
