I've seen quite a few postings about liver enzymes and in talking with my surgeon's office I discovered that they are doing a liver biopsy when they do the surgery. Is there something about the DS that causes stress on the liver that I am unaware of? What would about the DS would cause liver problems?
Thanks,
Katherine

This is a good question. I don't know the answer but I know my liver numbers are up and we think it's because of Tylenol I've been taking due to discomfort from my most recent surgery. I've been off all Tylenol and alcohol for about a month now. Hoping the numbers went down.
Any answers, anyone?

My surgeon decided against the liver biopsy when he did my DS. He said my liver looked completely healthy and he didn't want to touch it.

I think the concern about the liver is that morbidly obese people can have fatty liver disease. The two go hand in hand. Some surgeons will look at the liver during surgery to see if a biopsy might make sense. Just something to track post op (liver enzymes).

As was stated already, there is always a chance we have fatty liver disease. I did have my liver biopsied during surgery. My surgeon said he almost decided against doing the biopsy because my liver looked so healthy, but ultimately decided to do it. As it turned out, the biopsy showed I have nonalcoholic fatty liver. It has been 19 months since surgery and my ALT is just getting to the normal range. I hit my goal weight at 12 months and have been out of the rapid weight loss period for sometime. I'm happy to have the knowledge provided by the biopsy. I've seen quite a few postings about liver enzymes and in talking with my surgeon's office I discovered that they are doing a liver biopsy when they do the surgery. Is there something about the DS that causes stress on the liver that I am unaware of? What would about the DS would cause liver problems? Thanks, Katherine

Darn, I can't access the article... You have to be a member, maybe I'll try to join later.
Just an update on my liver numbers, they are good now. Amazing, a month and half without Tylenol and back to normal numbers. My Ferritin is the only number out of whack now and my doctor is clueless on what to do, she doesn't even make sense. Looks like I have a day of research ahead of me...
