Hello everyone.
I have been reading all the helpful advice everyone posts and thought I would take the plunge and introduce myself since my surgery has been scheduled! I am excited and nervous. I read all kinds of information about the DS and can't honestly remember what I read where. I have not been given any instructions from my surgeon to change anything pre-op except liquids only the day before and nothing after noon. I read somewhere to start a liquid diet two weeks before, no smoking a month before(yes I'm a smoker - working on quitting pre-op). Anyone here have a DS with Dr. Ayoola that can weigh in (haha) on his pre-op plan?
Thanks,
Katherine

Welcome, Katherine!
Congratulations on getting your approval and date. You're taking a great step towards being healthy and that's commendable. I know it saved my life!
I was on a two-week meal replacement prior to surgery. It was shakes from the surgeon's office. I hated it, and honestly, couldn't handle it and started just a few days before surgery. If I could stick to that, I probably wouldn't have needed the surgery to begin with! At least that's how I looked at it after failing the year before and canceling surgery. The second time, I did what I needed to do to get the surgery. Your surgeon would probably have told you if you needed to do anything else. I knew from the beginning about the two week diet. There was a good reason behind it, it was to shrink the liver prior to surgery. That makes sense, I just had trouble with it. No trouble at all with the DS eating, however, I've been very lucky in that aspect.
Good luck to you. April 4 will be here before you know it!
So happy for you, Kelly

Thank you for your kind words. I should probably look in to something to help shrink my liver as well.

I'm not an Ayoola patient, so, you didn't really ask for my input, but I would like to encourage you to stop smoking - today. And don't go back to it, ever. In addition to slowing the healing process, you'll probably be under general anesthesia for your surgery, and deep breathing is SO important post-op. Smoking severely reduces your ability to do that (without having a coughing fit). I was not a smoker, and the deep breaths were difficult after surgery, and I had moisture in my chest for a couple of weeks after surgery. I cannot imagine how much deeper a hole I would have been in if I smoked. Has your surgeon suggested or insisted that you quit? Please make this a priority. Wishing you the best.

Anyone here have a DS with Dr. Ayoola that can weigh in (haha) on his pre-op plan? Thanks, Katherine Welcome Katherine. Couple of things. I was not a patient of Dr. Ayoola but I would say just follow your surgeon's instructions pre-op. I didn't do any kind of pre-op "diet" except liquids the day before along with a cleanout As far as quitting smoking, I was a smoker but did not quit before my surgery. Like you I thought about it but for me personally I felt that giving up one thing at a time and focus on that was more important. I did ultimately quit smoking about 5 years after my surgery (using Chantix). I was shopping for a new primary doctor. Following my physical we were chatting. Of course we talked about my weight loss and how healthy I was. He looked at me and said "So you did all this work to lose weight, risked your life to have WLS, and yet you're still smoking. Why?" That just hit me the right way and I decided to try Chantix. For me it worked. I've been smoke free for about 6-7 years. Immediately post op (first month or so) simply follow your surgeon's instructions. Your only focus immediately following surgery is staying hydrated. Take a look at Vitalady's DS vitamin regime and see how you feel about it. Many of us follow it, or at least use it as a guide. Either the pre-packaged or I do the individual vitamins to make sure I'm getting what I need (she didn't offer those when I had my surgery 13 years ago).

Hi Katherine, welcome! I'm not a Dr. Ayoola patient, but I am a fellow 'revisionista' Revised from my original RNY to DS in December, 2011. You will see that surgeon's guidelines vary regarding pre-op prep, post surgery maintenance. My surgeon - Dr. Keshishian - said "if you could successfully follow diets, lose and maintain weight loss, you wouldn't need me or surgery" That said, it's not a bad idea to clean up your eating, and 'get in shape' for surgery, so to speak. If you can quit smoking, great; anything you can do that makes you in the best physical condition possible at your surgery date is a positive. That did not happen when I had my RNY in 2002 - I was so stressed, I was eating and gained! I did it differently when I had my revision. And you'll also find that while the surgeries are different, of course, there are a lot of similarities you will find helpful, particularly in the first healing/recovery months. My posts about my post-op journey are on here; and the thread on what to expect from surgery is a good one to read as well. If you would like further support, one on one 'angel' type, don't hesitate to PM me or email me at girlrockltd@gmail.com .

Good Morning everyone!
Thank you all for your words of support and encouragement. Girlrocker, I have read your journey and what an amazing, inspirational, and terrifying story. You are an incredible writer and I felt a real connection to you and so related to your sentiments, especially the girl with her face pressed against the glass. I would be honored if you would be my Angel, if the offer is still open!!! I need to get ready for work, but I will begin my story this evening, with one month to go before surgery!

Good Morning everyone! 5 Days to surgery! I am excited but also nervous. I'm kind of surprised how nervous I am. This is my 5th abdominal surgery and I've read virtually every post in preparation. I feel like I'm going in with eyes open, but obviously hoping I don't have any complications. It has been a long wait and I can't believe its finally here! I had my pre-op visit with Dr. Ayoola last Tuesday. He was very personable, starting the visit with a hug and ending it with a high five He wasn't concerned about my having had 4 previous surgeries and said he was prepared to do the surgery open if he found he was unable to complete it via lap due to adhesions etc, but felt that it wouldn't be a problem. My cc will be 100cm, which pleases me. I'm so excited I can't sleep! Katherine

Thank you for the good luck wish. I am back from surgery. Everything went well. Mostly pain free now, except for gas pain. GasX has never done anything for me and now is no exception. Had two protein shakes and some water, about 20 ounces so far today. Not liking the soups, not making me feel good, so I'll stick to water and protein shakes.

Katherine,
Just wanted to say to feel better soon. Just sip, walk, and get that protein in, as you can. Was the surgeon able to do it laparascopically or was it open? I know it's easier to heal when it was lap, mine was open.
Feel better soon, Kelly

My surgery was closed. The surgeon came and told me that they found an abscess in my stomach wall and kind of accused me of having something done that I didn't tell him about because he said other than surgery he didn't know how it could have gotten there, then he upped my chance for complications by 10% I was terrified!
