Hi, I am presently 2 yrs out from a RNY. Jan 10 1013. I have had several health issues during the past year or so; I started out with a Candy Cane Syndrome last Jan. I had surgery to remove it in April of 2014. Then from there on I have had nothing but issues. I can not seem to keep food down, everything make me toss my cookies pretty much. Liquids are ok, small amount of yogurt, but anything solid and I am tossing it up shortly after I eat. I am also hypoglycemic .. apparently this has been there for months but I was not totally aware of it ... it has gotten more pronounced as of thee past few months... not able to control with food. I developed ulcers this summer they are just outside of my pouch in the bowel area. On meds for the ulcers and then with the throwing up constantly dr. put in a feeding tube in early Nov 2014 although my blood reports were ok. Now even with the feeding tube in I still have low blood sugars...
here is my questions... my Dr. is saying he feels that a revision of my RNY to a sleeve would fix the throwing up, we have not discussed this at great length as I am not happy abut more surgery.... to say the least.;
I want to know has anyone had this done?? is this basically a twist on a DS?? I will definitely have more input from him by end of this month. I just wanted to find out other peoples opinions and thoughts.; To add, my surgeon is AWESOME, Dr J. Kenneth Reed Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S. out of Guelph Baratic Centre in Ontario. I have complete faith in him. Ty for any input.

Welcome! I'm glad you've found us! The sleeve is both a stand alone surgery and a part of the DS. It is called the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or VSG. It reduces the size of your stomach from about the size of a football to the size of a banana. It is similar, but highly superior, to the lap band in that it only provides restriction and no malabsorption. With your ulcers, you definitely need to get rid of that pouch. With a sleeve, a simple scope will show all of your stomach and you can catch ulcers before they can become deadly. Most people get the RnY because they required malabsorption to lose their excess weight, so most of them revise to the DS. But, this requires a surgeon highly experienced in RnY to DS revisions. Not that there aren't any, but I haven't heard of any in Canada. There are some studies and data about the VSG here: weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/board/63/vsg-dataYou can find images (drawings) of the DS at the link below. Just the stomach part is what you would get with the sleeve.: weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/7985/images-dsGet that pouch out of you! You will feel and be so much better.

hello and welcome Yes there are RNY to VSG(DS) patients on this forum, quite a few. Seems like you have had your share of complications and you are still feeling pretty awful. Revision of a RNY to a VSG (or DS) is a complicated surgery, with only a handful of surgeons with the skill to perform this throughout the world. I am not familiar with your surgeon, but I would be very leary of a surgeon and run for the nearest exit door who fully supported lap RNY as the "gold standard operation" and he does NOT do DS, you should at least consult with a surgeon that does ALL WLS (with the exception of the band) The only surgeon in Canada I know of is Gagner, but he is a slipper chap and moves around a lot. Have you thought about why you want to go from RNY to VSG instead of RNY to DS? Personally I wouldn't have a VSG, but that is just me, just to then have another surgery to the malabsorption component of the DS. You really need to educate yourself on the different types of WLS especially since you don't know what the difference is between VSG and DS, and you should know what RNY was in respect to VSG(DS) and what a surgeon needs to do to take down your pouch and revise to VSG(DS) I would suggest dsfacts.com And don't let just anyone perform this difficult surgery, RNY to VSG(DS) should only be performed by the most skilled revision surgeons, as there are only a handful in the world. Most travel, fly even continent to continent to have this done. I hope you feel better, getting rid of that pouch will help, revising to DS in my opinion is a better option than VSG.
