OK I printed out a list. I think right now I am going to get the protein and do my best on the complex carbs then when we get back get some of this stuff at Costco. 3 shakes a day Plus 3 meals a day that contain 20 G protein each If you can do that then you can add complex carbs, veggies, and some fruit. Plus 64 oz of fluids Plus vitamins

Do you ever have any spare time when you aren't eating or figuring out what you are going to eat.

Yes. In fact I don't think much about it. Because I've been doing it for 14 years. It's second nature.
I never count anything and I never measure anything and I never log anything. But I did in the beginning, and for a long time.
You are starting from scratch.

So you're not eating any more carbs today, right? No bread, no pasta.
You have to get up to 150g of protein today.
Did you have another shake?

Well Dr.Trotter emailed me and pretty much agreed with everything you guys have said. There was apparentley a miscommunication between him and his nurse who called me. So I guess this is what I need to do. He really is a great doctor and like I said he is the one that brought me out of this last time. I know he is a general surgeon but he has done the DS before and others. When he was in Spokane he worked in a Bariatric Surgery clinic. So he is not maybe as experienced as some of these guys that that is all they do like Dr.Heap world renowned surgeon at least according to him Google him some time and see.

Tomorrow morning for breakfast you should eat a 3-egg cheese omelette, with a side of bacon.
Then mid-morning you have a shake
Then lunch you need another protein-dense meal
Then mid afternoon you have another shake
Then early evening you have another shake (because you eat dinner late)
Then dinner is another protein-dense meal
All together you have to eat AT LEAST 150g of protein. And given that you are protein deficient, you should aim for 200g.

But obviously he didn't tell you how you need to eat in order not to get very very sick again.
I must admit I find it somewhat hard to understand how you could have ended up so sick with malnourishment yet somehow not have learned how DSers need to eat in order to stay healthy.
And something else - if you don't increase your protein intake dramatically, you are going to end up hospitalized again and needing albumin infusions.

Also - you don't need to be afraid of iron infusions.
The reason you had a major problem with the albumin is because of medical malpractice.
If you go to a reputable hematologist, you will not experience anything like that ever again.

Well I'll blame it on my job and the fact that what Heap told us I had no idea about it. It was very new and he was the only doctor in the state that did it. I was a railroad engineer so I was eating 2/3 of my meals on the road and was only home for 18 to 24 hours hours every 3 or so days. It was really hard to eat at restaurants because I eat so slowly. It takes me about an hour to finish a good size meal and a lot of the time I didn't have a choice of where to eat because it might be 2am or 2pm and had to get some sleep.

And I'll add that he didn't know/didn't tell you that you need vitamins in dry form - that you don't absorb fat soluble vitamins?
Pat you do not need a surgeon, you need a good internist and a hematologist and you need to start taking appropriate care of yourself.

Pat, that is not what to blame. What is to blame, if I may be frank, is that even when you started getting sick, you still didn't find out what you needed to stay healthy. You allowed yourself to almost die of malnutrition. Lots of DSers have extremely busy hectic lives - that is no excuse.
And then after you lost your legs….then you still didn't work on learning how to eat in order to be healthy? And obviously Trotter didn't advise you then did he.
Listen when I had my DS it was also very early on. Same as you.
I made it my business to learn everything about the DS, including how it works, what I absorb and what I don't. It's my body and my responsibility.
So now it's time for you to take responsibility for yourself, educate yourself, and take the advice here of people who have lived with the DS for years.
Start by getting on vitalady's DS regimen and DO NOT assume you can find the right stuff cheaper in all cases. It is about the CORRECT FORM of the vitamin.
And IMMEDIATELY you must increase your fluids and protein.
And you MUST see a hematologist.
And you have to ask your internist to test your pre albumin, ferritin, and PTH.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

And if I were you, I'd send that op report to Dr. Keshishian and see what he has to say.

I know it was my fault. I had people telling me that I looked terrible like death warmed over and I just poo pooed it and said I'll be fine and went on drinking my beer and smoking 2 packs a day, neither of which I do now. I really didn't believe anything was wrong, I felt OK I thought but when they did blood tests on me because I was having a lot of leg pain that I found out that I was so low on albumin that it was life threatening 1.9. I had red marks on my arms from what ever they call it when your body bleed below the first layer of sking when you bump it. I was taking no protein supp at all and barely eating. I realize it was my fault then but I really thought I was doing good got up to 174 and I cutout beer, ice cream, diet pop and I started losing weight. At first I thought it was that causing me to lose a little weight but when it kept on even after I started eating ice cream and my pants size started dropping and I was eating more than I was before it all started that I started getting worried. I actually feel better today. I don't know if it is because of the hope you guys gave me and the route to take or the change in protein and amount but I do feel better. Of course maybe its cause I quit drinking beer that all this started, ya think. LOL

I just found this thread and just read through all of it and I only mean to say this in the most complimentary way possible. The knowledge, persistence, willingness to help and patience in trying to help someone in need is truly exemplified in this thread more than any I think I’ve read. As a pre-op Ds’r, I am trying to learn as much as I can, so there is no bad information for me, just more data points. I wish you the best in getting your health back on track and am happy you came over.

I found the bio tech calcium citrate but it doesn't say how much is in each one. Pretty cheap $25 for 250 Also Vit D3 dry pretty good price.

Of course it says how much is in it. Read the bottle.
Who makes the D3 you bought? Does it say cholecalciferol on it?

Do you ever have any spare time when you aren't eating or figuring out what you are going to eat. At the beginning (which you basically are even though you had your surgery 14 years ago) it does seem to overwhelm. Like NYB, it does become second nature after a while.

You know what, at this point in your life, it doesn't matter any more who or what is at fault. What matters is that you are taking ownership of your situation and trying to remedy the situation. Read and learn. Read everything you can. It takes time and patience to learn how to eat all over again. If you never took the correct vitamins, it can be overwhelming to understand everything. It takes time. Ask questions but simply things (like reading labels) you should be able to handle. Learn the nutritional information for everything you eat. After a while it should become second nature. I'm almost 12 years post-op and early on I wasn't eating properly or taking the right vitamins. It takes time. Don't expect to get everything right the first time.
