Just got my labs done - everything seems fine, except for some reason my cholesterol was a little high (almost near the borderline....)
Is that normal? I have around 6 tablespoons of oil a day... I would have thought that's an acceptable amount for a DSer.
(3 years out now...)
Thanks

Your cholesterol may be high having nothing to do with the DS…
What are you eating every day?

LDL or HDL?

Some people's bodies produce excess cholesterol.
Since we malabsorb about 80% of the fat we ingest, I have never seen a DSer develop high cholesterol from their fat intake.
I would cut a couple of those tablespoons of oil out and be sure to keep a close eye on this, get tested again in a few months.

Sorry for the late reply - have been away for some time - went to a health centre for some weeks.
I showed my blood test results to a doctor there, she said my cholesterol level was just fine. Thank god! I asked her if I should try to decrease my cholesterol to be on the safe side - she said no.
Cholesterol 4.1 (recommended to be Optimum < 5.0) HDL Cholesterol 1.5 (recommended to be 1.2 - 1.7) LDL Cholesterol 1.9 (recommended to be up to 3.0)
I still find it a bit high - I feel it should be on the low end....?
Thanks.

I'm really hoping my DS lowers my genetically high cholesterol. That's one of the great benefits I've read about. REALLY wanting to be off the statin drugs, but regardless of my diet, mine stays sky high without them.
Approved for VSG to DS end of June 2014/ Dr Boyce in Knoxville /Age 40/5'8"/HW 287/CW 282

I agree with the comments regarding cutting back on the oil. Are you using healthy oils? I have learned to use olive oil and real butter. It makes a difference in developing good cholesterol (HDL) and keeping the bad cholesterol down.
Hey NurseMelanie, I have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. I had my DS 11 years ago and have not had a problem since. My HDLs have risen, but that is the good stuff. My overall average is still in the above average category, even though my triglycerides have gone up some since my early post-op days. There is hope!

Hey sgee,
Just saw your message. I'm pretty sure i've been having unhealthy fats all this time. I've recently been going to an English Ayurvedic doctor in London, who's also a nutritionalist. We've gotten my blood tests done, and waiting for the results. Meanwhile, for now he's told me to use only real butter and ghee for cooking, and I can have olive oil (not heated) on top of my food.

Hello, Yes, I had blood tests done as I was not well for 3 months. In May I had my final plastic surgery (had 3 in total: and they all went well) all of a sudden I could not eat or drink much: lost my appetite. Still continued to take my vitamins, although don't know how much was absorbed without much food, sufficient protein and fat. Forced myself to drink flavoured water. Docs & plastic surgeon, and the ayurvedic doc could not really explain why and made no real effort to find out why. Told me that my appetite would come back eventually once I got stronger. My DS surgeon was not there as he was abroad. While visiting parents abroad I was hospitalised, as I passed out due to low blood pressure. I was given drips for dehydration, protein, blood infusion, and other nutrients. We are going to do more blood tests in a months time. Below are some of my results, have also attached 2 files which includes my full blood results. FERRITIN, SERUM = 133.50 (should be between 10 - 291) IRON SERUM = 16.00 6.6 - 26.0) PROTEIN = 53 (60 - 80) ALBUMIN = 20 (32 - 52) VITAMIN D (25-HYDROXY) = 50.54 (30-100) HAEMOGRAM (CBC+PBF+ESR) RBC COUNT = 3.43 (3.8 - 4.8) HAEMOGLOBIN = 10.9 (12.0 - 15.6) HCT = 32.9 (36 - 46) VITAMIN B12 = 451.00 (156 - 672) PTH = 76.89 (6 - 80) CALCIUM = 2.08 (2.02 - 2.60) balika blood 1.pdf (249.05 KB) balika blood 2.pdf (99.72 KB) It's been just over a week since I'm back from the hospital, my appetite is coming back, it's the first time I'm eating properly in 3 months, although i'm still weak. At the moment can manage to get around 70g protein a day, with protein shakes. Drinking loads of water, and still continuing the vitamins.

You are in big trouble and it's not going to change until you change your diet. If you continue the way you have been for the last couple of years you will die prematurely. Are your religious dietary restrictions more important than your life? That is the decision you need to make. I have been telling you this for years.

This is my last post here. It's obvious now, that no matter what I write or share I will be attacked for being a vegetarian. Not the kind of support I'm look for. As I said, AT THE MOMENT, i'm getting 70g of protein: got nothing to do with me being a vegetarian. My appetite is still growing as my health is getting stronger, and i KNOW i'll be able to get back to 100g of protein: with or without your 'advise'. And I did not fall sick because I'm a vegetarian either.
Please don't assume you know what I've been going through as a DS patient for the past 5 years, you only know bits and pieces, as i mentioned I don't like to share much here, as I get bullied by some. I've also noticed this board likes to bully others as well, and treat them with disrespect and superiority: not the kind of environment I want join. Support can also include being kind and seeing things from a different angle. If you carry on like this, this board will come to a full stop.

100g is not enough either. Your protein is low, your albumin is low, your iron panels are off, your calcium is low, your PTH is high.
You come here looking for advice and then you don't want it - so why do you bother posting?
Melinda and I are about as experienced as you will find in the DS world. You would be wise to listen to us.
You are not being attacked for being a vegetarian - nobody cares if you are a vegetarian - but add that to the fact that you are not eating dairy and you don't eat eggs - you simply cannot get enough protein to keep yourself healthy. I mean you ended up IN THE HOSPITAL what more evidence do you need?
You are also not taking enough calcium obviously. Do you understand what high PTH means and what the long term implications are?
Why do you think you got sick? You said you got protein infused....so obviously you were protein deficient. And anemic. And dehydrated? So clearly you do not now what you need to do to stay healthy. So why are you resisting people who are trying to help you get healthy?
You need ABSORBABLE protein in your diet.
What do you want people to say "oh you poor thing sorry you're sick carry on?" You have no idea who might be reading along and the point of this board is to let people know what the issues are.
Why is it that you post here about your scary bloodwork and your getting sick?
What were your lab levels when you had the last plastic surgery?

Honestly no one cares if you're a vegetarian. We care that you are killing yourself slowly. I'm 14 years out, DS is 16 years out. You are 5? I think we may have more experience than you. Do you think helping you survive and giving you GOOD advice is bullying? You prefer us to say "oh wow, you're doing super! Keep on truckin!" You won't get that from me because I know you won't survive long on this track. I'd rather see you healthy and living life fully. If that's bullying, well call me a bully. (Which by the way is hysterical if you knew me and my personality - nothing is further but anyway, I honestly don't care what a stranger on the internet wants to label me) You came for input. You got it. Just because it's not exactly what you want to hear, doesn't mean you get to cry, take your toys home, and scream "bully". Please listen, while there is still time! Your life depends on it! Sure, bounce around to somewhere where they will pat your back and give you kisses and smileys. See if you can survive on that . . . Please, please get your health, your life in order now. We only get ONE.
