Dr. Sudan's office has been phenomenal in helping me get this done before the end of the year when my insurance changes.
We are *really* cutting it close though, my date is December 31st!
I am incredibly nervous that insurance might make a stink and ruin things... Other than that, I feel prepared and super excited.. I really hope this goes off without a hitch. Any positive thoughts, energy, prayers, whatever ya got in your mojo arsenal would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, they are definitely *cutting* it close (pun intended lol) but just make sure Dr. Sudan closes you up before midnight. Lol.
This is an exciting time for you and I think you are really prepared which makes it even better. Congrats!!!

Wow, HAPPY NEW YEAR to you! Dec 31 is still 2013 so I don't think your insurance can do much about it, but perhaps more experienced insurance peeps here will have some advice. Otherwise, you can enjoy your holiday season and, get ready for surgery. It's good to have some protein on hand to make your shakes though don't buy too much of anything in case your taste buds are fickle. Same for some handy newly post-op go to foods - sf jello, sf popsicles, soup you really like (broth only, no veg/meat/noodles/rice), sf pudding as an alternative to mixing in your protein powder, peanutbutter (if you like it). Crystal Light or Diet Snapple for a change of pace from water. Vitamins- you can get your full regimen ready ahead of time, but early on you'll just take a multi and calcium, ideally in liquid or chewable (no gummies!). Work your way up to the full load. Hospital - you won't need much for the hospital, they provide everything, maybe just some lip balm and a bathrobe. Better to get their stuff dirty, you won't be doing much but laying around in bed, hoping to pass gas and poop and walking. Some good support pillows if you don't have a recliner, the 'wedge' or the armchair pillow are very handy: Wedge pillow Armchair pillow You can get them at Walmart, Kmart, etc or order them online, Amazon. Clothing after surgery will mostly be comfy roomy sweats, leggings, loose shirts, nightgowns, robes, slippers; have shoes that are easy to slip on if you do your walking outside. I created my own notebook with all my surgery, diet, medical papers, along with a contact list of family and friends and other important numbers/emails so I had everything in one place, plus extra paper so I could write down my questions for doctor rounds so I didn't forget anything. Last big pic mindset- know you are heading into major surgery, there's going to be a helluva re-do on your GI system, so it will need to be babied at first, you will progress much like an infant does from liquids to soft foods, slowly reintegrate foods. The early post op time -6 to 12 weeks - are more about healing then 'rocking the DS'. That will come. There might be all kinds of emotions, it's a pretty big change, but not much about the early time is how it really is further out. You just need to stay hydrated and nourished as much as you can at first while your body heals itself. I'll also repeat that I am so happy you can do this as a proactive, preventive health measure when you're younger!

Awesome Katie. I am excited for you because I know how badly you want this. I know because I am right along side you. My DS date is Friday, December 13th. I am so looking forward to this day. My daughter married a wonderful man on this day, and my oldest grandaughter was born on December 13th. This is a great day for us. I pray yours goes well. Happy New Year. I will be praying for you. Sharyl thanks for the advice. I am going to look for that pillow.

My emergency bowel obstruction surgery (that's two surgeries in 48 hours) was on the weekend when it was Passover and Easter. Such a lovely experience.

Thanks everybody! Sheryl thanks for the excellent advice! How do I go about finding out who the attending doc is? Also, why? Thanks!

January 1st is a major holiday. Many hospital staff will be off that day. It is important to know who will be working, if they will be working with a skeleton crew, etc - you need to ask your doctor, and the hospital. Personally, I would never schedule major surgery for 12/31.

Thanks for the input, I will check into it. My mom is an RN and she will be with me around the clock so I feel like that's a big plus. She said in her experience, New Years doesn't tend to be like Thanksgiving or Christmas as far as employee holidays goes and that while she was working in the hospital, they tended to overstaff instead of understaff on New Years because of the increase in holiday related injuries/accidents. It could be different, of course! But if it is a skeleton crew at least I'll have the best advocate I could ever ask for with me, my momma is a pit bull when it comes to her youngins so I'm feeling okay with it. Hahaha.

I think you should ask, just to be sure. Ask specifically who will be the attending in the unit.

Today was my official pre-op day of classes, labs and appointments and everything went smoothly, except Dr. Sudan moved my date forward form the 31st to the 20th.
I'm having surgery THIS FRIDAY!
I'm in shock and excited and so NERVOUS. I'm so glad, but at the same time all of my waiting time is gone and it's HERE. In FOUR DAYS. Ahhhh, oh my goodness do I have the jitters!

Yay Katie! Think of it as an early Christmas instead of a New Year! I'm totally jealous - still trying to get all my paperwork, blood leeching, etc done so I can finally get my date! Wishing you the best - keep yourself busy making protein Popsicles for your freezer or planning all those after the Holidaze sales for new smaller clothes!
