So I'm about an hour away from my 1 month surgiversary. I am craving a coffee ( I'll settle for decaf ) with creamer ( I'll take fat free or sugar free if I have to ) I tried having almond milk in iced coffee it just was miserable. Also craving an apple!! Not cake not pizza not fried foods but an apple! I feel I didn't receive any guidance on fruits and veggies from my nutritionist I'm confused Thoughts...

Hi, I can not do milk but I do not have any issues with heavy cream. How about trying a little unsweateded Apple Sauce? At one month out I was still on liquids so I can not speak to what your Dr. recomends. But I think it is way to early for fibrous stuff! Congratulations on your surgery. Best, Whit

I know you had mentioned the "crunch" of the apple in another post, but are you open to a warm, squishy, soft apple with no skin (because it is too fibrous and hard to digest this early out)?
I will find that thread for you and post it here. I believe there were instructions on making baked apples (in the oven and/or microwave). Yum!

Well mine is more like peel and core an apple to 3/4 of the depth of the apple. In a separate bowl, melt 2 tbsp of butter in the microwave. Add spices (such as cinnamon, nutmeg, splenda w/brown sugar, sweetener of choice, or raisins, nuts etc when you are further out) to melted butter and stir. Pour mixture into partially cored apple and either cook it in the microwave or bake it slowly in the oven in a safe dish because it will be bubbly. Delicious!

Depending on how much cream you'd add to your coffee, I don't think the fat will matter all that much. Or try half and half or whole milk.
and a month out, my belly would have revolted w. an apple. But applesauce was ok. Maybe that will help your cravings a bit?

Thanks guys! I'm so afraid of getting sick that trying things that aren't on my list make me so nervous! Like ok I'm glad that the protein stuff agrees with me but something's I don't know if I can have?? Like I see people talking about protein bars and my nutritionist never mentioned this to me and I have a hard time with the shakes! I would love a protein bar! Going to try the apple that Lisa posted it sounds good and will satisfy my fall craving!

One thing I do know is that *most* nutritionists (I use that term loosely lol) suck a bag o' thumbs and preach the low calorie, low fat diet mantra for VSGers and DSers. I know you are early out still, but you will find MUCH better and more thorough information and ideas here on the boards. You know, from vets that have years of experience actually living with the surgeries rather than a pen pusher that simply took nutritional classes. Please don't get me wrong, there are a few that "get it" and are awesome (and by few I mean 3 in the country lol) but unfortunately many WLS people end up here and once they begin implementing ideas and such from vets, they can achieve an optimum result with their surgery choice. Those yummy apples will be awesome for you a few weeks down the road (or if you try it sooner, cook that bad boy till it can be mushed with your fork - realllllly soft). OMG I love me some fall foods (like pumpkin anything lol). Edited to Add: Just so I'm clear, I am by no means telling you to not listen to your NUT and/or doctor's instructions. Just to take the info with a grain of salt and compare it with real-life experiences and suggestions.

I would say that you can eat ANYTHING!
But only a teaspoonful or a slice.
If it is crunchy, chew it until it is liquid.
Wait a couple of hours and try another taste. You will know soon enough.
As you are a VSGer, watch the calories.

Hi, I was gonna say same, try that 'fear' and dive into the new adventure of it all! No question it can be overwhelming, such a big change so fast. But there's so much trial and error involved, first while you're healing and then when you start to reintegrate a bigger variety of foods.
I love Coffeemate, and think you would do fine with that, or half and half. I was going to suggest applesauce too, or baked style, which you can even do in the microwave, apples, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, splenda brown sugar; but I do love them best on the stovetop with a little butter, or for you, a good butter alternative like smart balance.

Yummy ! I saw your pumpkin cheesecake recipe that I think I'm going to make my sister Lauren make for thanksgiving!! I've been having pumpkin coffeemate with my decaf and added protein shake concoction . No problems !

If you are a big pumpkin fan, I lived off of this concoction early post-op (I had my VSG in Oct 2010). I don't recall exact measurements as I did things to taste but this is a rough estimate.
goat cheese ricotta (1/2 cup?) scoop of vanilla protein powder canned pumpkin puree (1/4 cup?) pumpkin pie spice (couple dashes?)
It was nice and mushy and tasted like pumpkin pie/pumpkin cheesecake. and I still make it on occasion for a nice snack.
