I'm 2 years post-op.
At night, when I get in bed and watch tv, I start my farting.
It's been a few months that I've realised that my bed is starting to smell bad! (Even though I change my bed sheets every week)
I've just turned over my mattress and put some brand new bedsheets: so now it's smells fresh. But i've starting farting again!
Does anyone have any advise on how to avoid stinking my bed!

What are you eating? If carbs (even milk based), you could be having a reaction to them. Do an elimination diet and find out what is causing it...
Farts are food related 99% of the time...what you put in your mouth.

LoL, sorry but I so relate! I don't have a lot of gas but for some reason the leather seats in my wife's car hold it like mad! Sorry for sharing that, TMI and all, but you are not so unique, we all get it sometimes. K

Oy, I relate I actually have 'potty' issues, something I had before my DS revision, and got back when I got back my stomach. They are better controlled with careful attention to what sets it off. But while I have been going through that process, I have dealt with something similar in the bathroom toilet, which of course, mortifies me, especially now that I no longer live solo. I'm able to use bleach there, of course. Is the gas issue new, or do you think you are eating things that contribute to it? As for the solution, for now, and if the gas issue isn't food driven; you might have to turn your mattress semi-regularly, perhaps try a good disinfectant spray (over the Febreze type things which don't really remove odor) along with changed sheets. And then 'refresh' with disinfectant spray each time you sheet change?

I would use something like Oxyclean. Husband put in a heavy duty fan in our bathroom. Good investment.

Girlrocker what kind of potty issues? I have had horrible potty issues and finally found out I have collageneous colitis. It took some time to finally diagnose it...but I didn't have IBS...it was colitis.
Oh yes, I have farty sheets too...but the smell doesn't seem to last that long.

IfI may interject here, since fluffyme has braved the path and opened the door to this yucky but fact of life issue for some of us... I had a 'nervous stomach' before I every had surgery (RNY); eating less fried/fatty food helped it as my overall eating improved over time while I was struggling with diet and behavior change. The RNY actually nipped it in the bud a little since I no longer used my 'real' stomach, but the pouch. Now I have my stomach again of course. It seems to be food driven, mostly white flour carbs, occasional liquid dairy/ice cream (not cheese, thank GOD) and definitely if I have more than once cup of coffee. There are other foods that don't agree with me, like cabbage, too much spinach or broccoli, and, sugar alcohols. No more Atkins shakes, bars for me! or anything else using the stuff. I seem to be managing it better, and down to one 'episode' in the morning. But ugh, I'm amazed at how much bleaching it has taken to deal with the toilet. That I am armed with a bathroom fan, effective sprays and lots of incense goes without saying, and I travel with the latter two all the time.

Your stomach issues were better with the RNY before the DS? I have IBS to begin with, so I was wondering if any DS patients had pre-problems.

Fixing the problem will mean removing the gas-producing foods you're eating. Usually carbs or sugar alcohols.
In the meantime, get some Devrom (available online) and chew 2 to 3 vaguely bananaish flavored tabs twice or three times a day. It won't stop the gas but it will remove the odor of your feces, etc.
Good luck.

Sometimes, in my sleep, my body cannot tell the difference between gas and liquid. That is the worst!
Hubby sleeps with air freshner next to his side of the bed. He often lies down later than me, and says opening the sheets can be quite a challenge. I do tend to keep that carby treat for supper time to void gas at work. Poor man.
Perhaps we should try some kind of pet deodoriser. For the mattress and the car seat.
Oh well, it is a small enough price to pay for that Amarula cream liqueur, gellato, pizza slice, roast vegetables, etc.

OMG this is what I have to look forward too, lol, farty smelling sheets? Great! Well, only if you constantly consume inducing carbs/sugar alcohols The poop/gas issues for the DS are more the exception then the rule, and as mentioned, mostly due to flour carbs or certain other carbs (certain high fiber does it for me too), and sugar alcohols, all controllable. nyuboi, I have a nervous stomach history that got some reprieve with my RNY because I had a pouch with my lower intestine attached to it, my stomach was a non-used reservoir. Now I have my actual stomach again via a sleeve when I was revised to the DS. High fat, fried foods exacerbated a lot of my nervous stomach issues prior to any surgery, I had no bowel syndromes of any kind; so I've had to do my own style of elimination with this new plumbing to sort out the biggest culprits.

Have you had an colonoscopy? That's how they finally figured out I had colitis. I felt as if I had a nervous stomach, too...that's why I asked.

fluffyme,
Do you use a mattress cover? That might help. I have a dog that likes to sleep with me & I keep a mattress pad on the mattress & gives an extra layer of protection between the sheet and the mattress. Some of them have a bit of a rubber backing so NOTHING gets through to the mattress. I got mine at one of the mattress stores.
You can put it into the washing machine but you can't bleach the ones with the rubber backing. I also have one now which just looks quilted & it can be bleached.

I agree with tina9999 on the mattress cover. Might try spraying down your mattress with Zorbx and letting your mattress air out before putting anything back on it. www.zorbx.com/I also think you might want to re-examine what you are eating to cause the gas. Are you taking probiotics? A good quality, high bacteria count probiotic could make a difference.

Thanks everyone for sharing your advise and experience:)
Lols Lulu-Leo!! That's funny!
I don't know why I didn't think of getting a mattress cover, a very good idea - definitely going to get one now:)
Thanks for the web link for the order control mattress.
I guess I have been eating carby foods lately - I also think I'm not drinking enough water (for some reason drinking lots of water dilutes the smell of my farts...but not my poop!).
I've found a quick solution - when i'm in bed and i know i'm going to fart - i quickly turn on my stomach and lift the quilt away from my ass - let it rip... wait for 10 seconds - then return back to normal position.....
Thanks again everyone!!!

I have noticed there are certain fabrics that hang on to the smells of my gas. When I drive, I sit on 2 beach towels folded in half. I pull those towels out once a month and wash them, using vinegar as a fabric softener.
Actually, I use vinegar as the fabric softener all the time now because of this. It works great and killing bacteria, smells, BO and vitamin over-use that leaches out of our skins.
Bed – I have a piece of Visqueen plastic (cheap, and comes in a large roll) covering my mattress, a mattress pad on top of that, then sheets. I put the plastic down when I sharted in my sleep one time. I just never wanted any of that to get on my mattress, so a plastic cover seemed the best idea. I also have a down comforter, and I am conscious of how much farting I do under that thing because it will get into the down and hang in there for ages.
And I try to eat fart causing things on the drive home from work. That way, farting hits before bed time and it’s over by the time I get under the sheets. And I use a strong pro-biotic, which has really helped every issue back there in every way.

Hey Janet,
Thanks! I like your idea of leaving the plastic over the mattress, simple yet effective!
So far, my bed is not stinking - everytime I want to fart - I quickly turn around and fart in the air. Normally I dont allow myself to fart during the day (or quickly go to the toilet and let it out). But when it comes to bed time - i am totally relaxed:)

Have you tried to eliminate dairy to see if that reduces your gas? I think your gas is here to stay...because you don't eat meat, fish, or eggs. Which means that you have to eat legumes and dairy...which probably means lots of gas, forever.

yes, the gas is because of the milk i have daily for my protein shakes (twice a day): my life saver!
I'm content with my gas issues, but i just miss by bed smelling so nice and fresh!

Listen to KathyF. Awhile back, I PM'd her after going through a bladder infection from hell. I had 3 of them in quick succession. Well, turns out the antibiotic upset my intestinal flora in a spectacular way. KathyF suggested Florastor, which I ran out to buy. I went through two boxes before the problem completely went away. I'm talking COMPLETELY went away.
Don't tolerate stinky farts. Diana Cox talks about Tivo-ing her farty foods. Do that. But first, nail down the cause. The kind of farts that linger on furniture and bedding are exactly what I had, and Florastor cured them. It takes a few weeks, but I noticed improvement within 3 days. I kept on taking it about 4-5 times a day because it would come back. You've got to get the flora in your guts repopulated.
My bed smells fresh. Yours should, too. Don't live like this. This is what gives the DS a bad name.

Okay, she doesn't eat meat, fish or eggs. But why? Because her body won't tolerate them? That's one thing. But if you CHOOSE to avoid these excellent protein sources due to something other than food allergies, that's a whole other topic entirely.
If she's allergic to everything except milk, and that's her only protein source, then Florastor and the Digestive Advantage Lactose Defense product will definitely help. My adult son is now on both of those products with spectacular results after years of issues.

She doesn't eat them because of religious beliefs/traditions. She was warned.

WOW. In that case, like I said, it's a whole other topic. Not a polite one, either.
This is exactly the type of person who gives our surgery type a bad name. Most of us go out of our way to avoid smelling bad, precisely because we are aware that we have that side effect. But to purposely eat foods in excess that you KNOW cause you to reek (and make everything around you reek) is irresponsible as well as just plain stupid.
In that case, you are going to get exactly what you deserve. There's no TIVO-ing of the offensive food, because you're eating it in excess constantly. I feel bad for everyone around you. Sooner or later people are going to start avoiding you due to odor.
This post should serve as a warning to newbies.

She can't avoid the gas-inducing food. She relies on it for nutrition, because she doesn't eat meat/fish/eggs.
She doesn't give "our surgery" a bad name. She has every right to make whatever choices she wants to for herself. She is not being irresponsible or stupid - she is eating what she has to eat to keep herself healthy.
Yes, she is going to have a lot of gas and it's going to smell. But that is the choice she made, and that is her right.
She doesn't owe any other DSer anything.
I find it particularly galling to hear a DSer so full of judgment and contempt for another DSer. Imagine if someone were saying what you're saying about an obese person.
I think someday fluffy may need to reconsider her dietary choices, despite her religious beliefs and traditions, especially when she's ready to consider an intimate relationship. But still - those will be her choices, and her first priority is to keep herself healthy, not to worry about the DS' reputation.

Furthermore, this board has many, many posts from DSers talking about how much their gas stinks, how they've cleared public restrooms, etc etc. I don't see people condemning that behavior. It happens to all of us, sometimes more, sometimes less.
