My two cents:
I am so happy that Diana has brought up this subject. I'm leaving Kaiser as of tomorrow because my husband has lost his job. When he obtains insurance again I'm certain that we will not be with Kaiser. My Kaiser surgeon (Dr. Gary Belzberg) made it clear to me before and after surgery that should any future complications with my intestines or stomach arise, he needs to be alerted because there is (according to him) no one in Kaiser who knows enough about DS anatomy to deal with me. Well, that put the fear of god in me right there. Now that I'll be on my own, I want to know that there is another surgeon who can be consulted in case of an emergency. I worry that only a DS surgeon might understand certain symptoms or be able to explain my anatomy to another surgeon or physician. Perhaps I'm being overly concerned but it gave me peace of mind to know that I had someone there in my corner who was willing to help me speak out if I was unable.
My solution to my problem was to contact Dr. Keshishian (the nearest DS surgeon--just a few miles away) and ask if he'd take me on as a patient. I explained that I wasn't looking for a revision, just to have someone help me if and when I need advice about my insides. His receptionist didn't think it would be an issue. So we'll see where I go from here.
I respect that many of us here can see no need to keep in touch with their surgeons but I for one, can see the value--for me at least.

My surgeon sent me a nice little letter telling me, that since my PCP orders my labs and such that I was no longer in complaince and for that i was told I am no longer his patient... and well I called a couple of Bariatric surgeons and their comment was that they would have to take it beofre their review board to see if they could take me on as a patient... I have educated my PCP and he ask me questions every three months when I see him ( he likes to see you 4 times a year) I guess it works for me but that doesn't mean that it works for everyone like that... whatever you are comfy with

I am truly sorry for the passing of these fine surgeons and for the loss their many patients must feel.
But many of us are in the boat of no continuity of care via a surgeon so maybe those of us who do our own follow-up can be of some help in teaching folks how to ensure they are getting good care even without a surgeon on board.
