I'm still pre-op, so cannot talk about life as a DSer. However, I'm concerned about your references to drinking alcohol after RNY/DS. Some posts on the OthHer board give very specific (and kind of scary) descriptions of the very bad effects alcohol have on someone with an altered digestive track. If I understood those posts, alcohol not partially digested by the stomach/small intestine hits the liver as a poison. The buzz comes faster and leaves faster too -- which may lead to increased consumption. What doesn't leave is the damage that is done to the liver. Cirrhosis is possible even if the drinker just drinks socially/occasionally. Are you willing to do the lifestyle changes -- even to the point of giving up most, if not all, alcohol? I am writing with regard to the above quote sent in a reply to a post of mine. I was aware of how much easier it is to get drunk with a RNY consuming alcohol over a traditional person, but does anyone know how alcohol impacts DS? Do you get drunk quicker like RNY, and is it dangerous to drink socially??? Its one thing giving up food, ciggarettes, but now alcohol too? Paul

this is the first I have heard on the "poison" idea. Sounds fishy to me
Most doctors advise no alcohol for 6 months, one year and a few two year. This is due to the strain on the liver during the weight loss period. I have not heard of docs limiting alcohol after than point.
Like most of what we ingest, the effects vary between individuals. A common theme amongst many, including me, is a quick buzz on one or two glasses of wine, then a quick sobering. Sugary drinks can have ill effects for obvious reasons.
Social drinking is perfectly acceptable once you have reached goal, and once you have experimented a little (in the privacy of your own home) to understand your response to the alcohol. As with any drinking, use moderation, and have a designated driver. While you may feel sober, their may still be alcohol in the blood that would cause impairment and trigger a DUI. Don't take any chances.
While not a physical effect, some WLS veterans experience "transfer addiction", shifting the prior food addiction to alcohol. This is not limited to the DS. Therapy helps many manage their compulsions.
so my take is the responder was blowing smoke. Limited social drinking, post DS, can be perfectly healthy, when practiced responsibly

You are completely unprepared for this surgery and yet you feel the need to start two alcohol threads. Your priorities are fucked.

I have to concur with Happy DSer. It's not a good idea early post-op due to the strain on the liver, and essentially, alcohol is a 'weight loss' killer. Alcohol is referred to as 'empty calories' because there is no way for the body to break it down and use it, just converts to sugar first, than fat. So to maxmize the weight loss window it's good to steer clear as much as possible.
And there are all the behavior/transfer addiction issues too. How it affects you is personal to you. I'm definitely a lightweight, can't drink like I used to, and, I react to certain alcohols differently. I was like this during my RNY and right now 6 months into my revision, I've had a few glasses of wine, mostly around my birthday, and that's about it.
I understand Megan's frustration. I haven't read your other post, but hopefully you're asking about a whole bunch of things, that the alcohol questions are part of assessing a long-term life style so you know what you're getting into.

this is the first I have heard on the "poison" idea. Sounds fishy to me It was. I reviewed the original quote I referenced at the start of this thread with Dr. Roslin's office. The alcohol impact is what we all know it to be in terms of getting buzzed quicker and all. There is liver damage issues or Cirrhosis - these things can happen independent of alcohol.

I am 8 plus year out, and I have a glass of wine every night with dinner. You will find the effect hits you much quicker, and you seem to get sober quicker. If you were ever drunk in the first place, I never drive even after one drink because of the "buzz" I get.
I must admit I'd like to do a breath test to see if I'm as buzzed as I feel, but not willing to test it.
I started drinking about 6 months after surgery.

I very rarely drink but when I do drink it is to get drunk. The idea of socially drinking something that tastes a bit like arse makes no sense to me. I am an all or nothing girl. So once or twice a year I will go out and get shit faced with mates and cause havoc then suffer for three days afterwards swearing I will never ever ever drink ever again.
Inevitably I do. I get drunk on the thrid glass, get a lisp on the 8th and feel sober again by the 12th but I am not. Ususally I just think it is a great idea to do batshit crazy things but feel rational doing it. I call it "evil overlord drunk".
I feel desperatly hung over for days and really do not think alcohol consumption is worth it. Aslo I have to send out apologies or pay for repairs and shit and really I could have just avoided it to start with.
I would say to any new DSer do not even consider drinking for the first 6+8months. My liver enzymes were all over the place for the first year and adding more processing to an already stressed liver and renal function is stupid.
I think I am stupid to binge drink as well. It does upset my GI tract and I do pay for it. So yes there is no alcohol free ride...but has there ever been?

Only the liver can process alcohol. There is no partial digestion by the stomach or intestines first.

It was an accident. Remember, im new to this? If my priorities are fucked its because i am answering these occasional mean posts instead of sleeping for surgery. No you aren't. You started the world's longest thread before surgery AND COVERED THE TOPIC OF ALCOHOL ALREADY. It was one of your concerns. You were warned. You had surgery. It kills me that your surgery apparently went great and yet I sit here with all of these complications and health issues. And yet here you are again, determined to screw with your health. Stop it. Just stop it. You are better than committing Muchausen-by-drama again. You "researched" the finer points of DS surgery for months. I call BS on any innocent protestations from you about being new to the DS. Be thankful for your health and don't screw this up. Please. Guys, this thread is from July of 2012. Old threads are being responded to as if they're new

Haven't been here in a while. After talking with Diana and Larra, I thought I might get more involved.
Never heard of necroposting, but guess I'm guilty. The OP listed misinformation that I thought needed to be addressed, so I responded to clarify.
Having not been here in so long everything was marked unread for me. My mistake. I'll own it. I didn't notice the date and didn't intend to ruffle anyone's feathers or "mommy-button".
Since it's so offensive, maybe threads should be locked or archived after a certain time to prevent rule violations.

Indeed. If it's so evil to have an informed medicine person "necropost," maybe it's time to rethink the structure of these forums. God forbid we should value informed content more than mommy buttoners.
I want to go on record as being DELIGHTED to see SlimShady ANYWHERE and as voting his content worthy of ANY emphasis.

Please do not lock or archive posts. Some of us have not been here long and I search all of the time for information. Threads are never archived. They are all here to stay. Locking a thread in no way effects the ability to read it but, I am not going to lock every old thread. (Good rule of thumb: If you haven't posted in 8 months, do not assume that all the threads that are new to you are still active.) But do not go digging up threads that are a year and a half old, either. Start a new thread if you'd like further discussion on a subject or pm someone personally, if you prefer. Why this is was perfectly demonstrated in this instance. A couple of people attacked a poster for an issue that was OVER a year and a half ago. Their posts were deleted. Nasty business all around. Let's avoid that.

NO ONE is entitled to behaviors that we wouldn't accept from EVERYONE. Now, EN, if you told me that would be absolutely DELIGHTED to have Nyuboi necroposting, all I can say is, "Pants on fire." It wasn't reported for necroposting. It was the new attacks on an individual that this resurrected post caused that were reported. It had died a natural death July 2012. It should have been left in peace.

I did not see the ensuing flame wars that went on but I have to say, three baileys with half and half later into my weekend and I concur with most of what was read. It was perfectly topical to me and I was glad to see it. I don't think the problem is the necropost per say, more of a problem with the critical attacks of board police. (and I love and respect some of them dearly!) Can't we all just get along? K Btw I am a scotch drinker with an awesome variety at home, often do these weekends where it starts at Johnny Walker Black and goes up from there... Yet it still intimidates me and I feel like the baileys and Half and Half is almost acceptable (fat and protein ya know) And I feel one, Silly on two, sober feeling really quick.

But, I agree that they should just try to get along and use the IGNORE button before they are tempted to attack anyone again.

I'm not being sarcastic. Just because you didn't name me doesn't mean I didn't understand. That kind of feels like attacking...and there's not even caring behind it.

I wrote a tough love post and as soon as someone pointed out the date, I deleted and apologized. I can't see where any "attacks" happened. There was no flame war. But I certainly feel singled out, as I'm the only one who wrote something.
If anyone reported it, you should have had the balls to pm me or ignore me. It came from a place of exasperation in caring about someone.
Attacks are where someone is trying to tear you down without caring. Which is exactly how I feel right now. So much for support.

I deleted posts and never mentioned anyone by name. As noted in TOS, I am no longer leaving posts up that attack someone while we wait for the poster to modify their own words. That leaves those words posted for far too long. But, since you say that YOU deleted your own post, NONE of this applies to you, anyway. Stop with the drama.
