I've always had a lot of hair - I lost some when I went through menopause (sorry guys) but I still had lot. I don't know why I thought I wouldn't lose any hair - maybe because I didn't lose any with the crap band, but of course I almost weigh as low now as I ever got with that POS, so this has been faster.
I just assumed that it was malabsorption that causes hair loss - or vitamin deficiency . . . or not enough protein.
So, is 35 lbs in 10 weeks that fast of weight loss? Is it vitamin or protein deficiency??
Kind of freaking out but keep telling myself it's OK, it's OK . . . take a breath. I've read not to freak out but I can see my scalp . . . it's getting so that I'm afraid to brush my hair more than I have to!!!
Any and all comments or similar experiences appreciated - as well as any solutions!!!
eta: I had two surgeries in two months when I had the crap band put in because of a port revision (it didn't work, go figure) and I still never lost any hair from the anesthesia . . . nor did I lose any when they removed the beast 18 months later.

No solutions other than time.
I lost a ton of hair when I lost 100lbs+ fast, years ago pre-surgery.. It's a shock to your body to go into such a deficit calorie wise, so hair follicles shut down and the hair eventually sheds.
Nothing but time will fix it. Do not waste your money on pills, or special shampoos. Make sure you are hitting your protein goals, and of course, get in your vites- but neither has anything to do with this hair loss.. Google telogen effluvium if you want to read up a bit more, but the cause is the rapid shift down in calories, plus any added stress to your system from surgery. But, as I noted- if you lose fast regardless of how you restrict your intake (surgery vs white-knuckling!) your hair may very well shed for several months.
I am on Men's Rogaine foam (for years now) and that didn't prevent it, nor help it. I lost for about 3-4 months, from mo 4 onwards. Stopped up the shower a few times. It got a little sketchy, but it's coming back. We notice it more than others. Invest in some great "thickening" hair styling products and don't rule out a new style to help it look better until the shed is over.

I was thinking I was doing something 'wrong' . . . I know that sounds dumb because everyone pretty much talks about hair loss but I thought it was related to protein or vitamins, or I needed to take something special because I have read about that too.
Maybe I'll get some stuff that makes my medium thick hair strands thicker - good idea!! I don't like seeing my scalp!!!
Thanks for responding, I know this is probably one of those questions that gets 'old' but when it happens to you, it's very weird!!!

Patience is your friend with this. Also a shorter hair style really helps. I went extremely short when it happened after my RNY 11 years ago. Got a Halle Berry cut and decided it was a chance to have a new relationship with my face. You may not wanna go THAT short but it wound up being a great experience plus, when hair grows back it starts short so it looks more even.
This time I'm going to try keeping it long and see what happens but I feel for you... Seeing your scalp isn't fun!

I gotta say too, we have to stop apologizing because we mention that we have bodily functions!! Men know we do and some of them have wisdom to share because they have shared lives with people who have them too!
and if they are icked out, well. then I am going to chase them down and touch them with a box of tampons, I will.
Yea, its weird but its definitely not unusual. Of course now, with me - I did not have labs until 1 year out and WAS way low with protein (like a full point below low normal) so if I had had that knowing I could have started up the shakes sooner than I did, but well. There you go. I just kept my hair up mostly and cut it all at the same time and got off of the haircolor teat.
Sorry its so freaky.

Mine is finally growing back in stages. I call myself fozzy bear. I lost probably a solid 3/4 of my volume. It was scary. At least it dries faster lol. Nothing you can do, shock is shock. Be it calories, sugery or anesthesia, your body is handling it the best it can. I'm 7 months post but lost 45 pre, and my rate of loss has slowed so that's probably why.

I'm 13 weeks out from RNY and have just noticed in the last week mine is starting to come out. I've gone a bit shorter, and am just trying to accept that it will grow back, and this is just a phase. If someone had sold me a weight loss pill that would have allowed me to lose 33 pounds in 13 weeks, with hair loss, I can pretty much guarantee I would have taken it. So I am learning to deal with it! Good luck to you.

Welcome to telogen effluvium. Just because it didn't happen with other surgeries doesn't mean it didn't happen with this one. You're in the perfect time frame to be seeing significant loss from this phenomenon.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with me, it's be interesting at best!!!
I know what you mean about not apologizing for all things related to women, it's probably a habit!! Go get 'EM with the tampons - I wanna watch LOL!!!

Time is your friend with this, as is a good hair cut.
Let me add that my labs are always decent, but I had hair loss that just continued through year two, then at year 3 I upped my protein even more, and my hair loss is finally over.
For some of us, despite getting the 80-100g of protein that our surgeons suggest (or at least think we are getting that much), and not having labs show any deficiency, still need more.

Yes, this (in addition to telogen effluvium). Even at 2+ years out from surgery with all my labs well within "normal" range, I can tell if I've not been taking in enough protein because my hair will start falling out more. Again, this happens even though my protein levels on labs are NOT low, and I eat around 150 grams of protein from food daily. As soon as I add in 1-2 protein shakes per day, the hair loss slows down. I can't explain it, but it has been a consistent pattern for me.

I lost with every surgery I have had, plus pregnancies. Joy. I just started the mad shedding from my LBL in December and have no doubt I will start losing again in 3-4 months post Phase 2 of the reconstruction. My hair is a hot mess with the DS, hysterectomy plus reconstruction.
I made the mistake of chopping my hair and I really regretted it. Rocking the ballerina bun plus scarf was easier to deal with than this short mess with fuzzy halo. I am about to begin a torrid love affair with hats.

I would gladly take my long with fuzzy halo back. At least then I could use hair product and smooth it all back into a ponytail or a bun. {laughs}

My hair is scaring me too. Even though I know its normal....it still bugs me. I'm *not so patiently* waiting for this phase to be over. I've lost so much hair, to put a pony in, I use one of those little itty bitty ponies that you use for little girl hair. Amy

I am over 2 years out and mine is still extremely thin. I had always had very thick hair. When my lab worked was checked my protein level was low. I have been upping my protein, but not sure how long it will take for re-growth?
Btw, I'm a CRAP-BANDER also. :-(

I've now got 3 stages of growth. Some is 2 inches long, some is 1 inch and suddenly the bulk loss on my crown started, a billion hairs 1/4 inch all over.
Freak show! I'm buying stock in gel.

OMG countof3, I totally remember that from my band! I look like I went to a blind person for a haircut. And I have really curly hair but that hair grew in bone straight so I had this crazy group of hairs standing at attention off my head like some crazy halo. I would have to shellac it down every morning.
Ugh, not looking forward to THAT again!

Go get 'EM with the tampons - I wanna watch LOL!!! When I was around 3-4 years old, I saw my mother pull a tampon out of the linen closet. When I asked her what it was, she opened it up and blotted it on her lips. Told me it was a lipstick blotter. I wanted lipstick, too, so she gave me a couple of Chapsticks that I applied religiously. They were entertaining one night, I remember the living room full of people I didn't know. With the full attention of the room and wanting to impress everyone with what a "big girl" I was (in case they had other ideas) I expertly applied my Chapstick and then pulled out an opened tampon and began blotting. That's MY tampon story. ;D

I had lost ALL my hair, but mine too has been growing back at very different rates in different spots. I was trying to grow it out, but by the time it hit my shoulders, I couldn't stand it any more and recently had them cut it all off again to give it chance to grow in more evenly. But, I have to say, I am really starting to like this short hair. Here's a pic of me from last Saturday. (I'm the blonde): Click to enlarge.

From one short-hair chick to another, you pull it off well. I never went super-short till I lost the weight, now I don't ever want to go longer again, it just works so damn well.

Thanks for the compliment! I never, ever would have cut it this short on my own had it not all fallen out. But, it is so easy to care for, takes me less time in the shower, and I use WAY less hair products. I have a rhinestone head band I use to dress it up every now and then and wigs fit over it easily if I really want a change.
