Possibly obvious. Having your labs and knowing your values is GOOD!
Purchasing your vitamins/supplements, be sure to write down the mg dosage of them (if you do not order them all from the same place with a list that you order from) because you may well pick up a lower/higher dosage than you picked up last time (folic acid in my case) and then wonder why the hell your labs are so different this time and spend time chasing ghosts, when the answer was, you have been supplementing differently!
I picked up some more folic acid, not paying much attention to the dose because the bottle lasts me a zillion years (it seems) and I write on top of the bottles what the daily dose of those are (it makes it easier when I put everything in the vitamin keeper box). Well my old folic acid top did not fit on the new folic acid bottle, and when I looked closer, the dosage was half on the new bottle than it was the old bottle.
Looking at my labs shows me the old bottle dosing kept me in the proper range, so I know I need to just double up this new bottle - but again, lesson learned and hopefully shared to write your mg dosage down on your "things to buy" list so you can be sure!
Unless this is just something I need to do because everyone else's head is not full of other things and thus they have room for numbers :}

You are absolutely right. So many times people think that because it has the same name, it's the same dosage. You would also want to educate yourself on drug and vitamin interactions when adding a new drug, vitamin or herbal supplement. I can't tell you the number of times I've had patients hospitalized because they started taking something they read about and it nullified something else they were taking. Be educated and informed!

I am a nerd and actually keep a spreadsheet of all my labs with another tab for a list of supplements including dosage, how much it costs per bottle, how many doses I get per bottle, where I buy it, etc. Using this, I can estimate my daily, monthly, and annual supplement costs, plus I can always see how much I've been paying in case I can find a better deal someplace else. I also just print out the columns of what I take and how much whenever I go to a new doctor because they always ask what meds/supplements you're taking, and I never remember to list everything correctly, so I just bring my list with me.
