So I went to see my surgeon today for my 4 week checkup. I'm down 28lbs, which is great considering I had a 11 day stall in there. Last time I was there he told me not to ever worry about the amount of carbs I ate and this time he told me not to eat any carbs except what is in my protein?!?! If anyone can explain the rationale behind that, I'd love to hear it! I am losing just fine, and am getting in my protein and water - haven't even had a Christmas cookie. So I'm wondering why he said that to me. Obviously eating crap food was what got us all here in the first place, so I'm not going to go back to it, but I just don't understand his suggestion of not ever having any carbs (even at maintenance). I don't think I can get with that! Kind of a rant, sorry you guys! But how do most of you do it? Do you count your carbs or do you do what I do and just eat your normal meals? By the time I finish getting in all my protein for the day I don't even have room for anything else...blech ~Micah

28 pounds is good. That is weird. Did you ask him why the big change in plan?
I'm not avoiding all carbs. I'm still focused on protein and water, but I also get about 1 serving of fruit per day and 1-2 servings of vegetable. maybe 1-2 servings of whole grain. Not all of those happen each day. I'm down about 119 at 6.5 months.
If you didn't ask him, ask the nurse.

I'd ask the Dr to explain it to you.. even if you need to have another appointment to have a chat with him. I never hesitate to question mine if I get info that doesn't jive. Sometime's it's a mistake in my understanding, sometimes he makes the error (my PCP.)
With that said, I count all carbs. My surgeon's plan was 600-800 cals a day, under 40g carbs and 70+ protein.. until goal.. then up the cals by adding more nuts, healthy fats and slowly adding back some carbs.. knowing what I know about my body and how it handles stuff, I'll be adding back lower GI/GL carbs only. The rest of carb family will be considered "treats" to be had on occasion only.. not everyday.

I was actually kind of caught off guard, so I didn't ask him to explain. I think I am going to contact his nurse though and get a definitive answer - the change in plan bugs me, although I think what I'm doing is working. It's just maintenance I'm worried about (a long way off). He told me not even to have fruit until then, but bananas are listed on my food plan at 3 weeks. Hmm... He doesn't really have me on any particular plan except for aiming for around 80g of protein and getting all my water and vites in. He did give me some dietary guidelines for the food stages, but other than that, nothing really - part of the reason I searched out you guys Maybe he was just frazzled today, I don't know but it bugged me. I can't go see him for another 8 weeks because we just moved (hubby's job) 9 hours away, so it makes office visits few and far between. We do keep in contact via phone and email though, so I'm just going to get in touch with his office and clarify things. ShrinkingMimi: 119lbs is great!! I can't even get my head around losing that much. I'm happy as a freaking clam with the 30 or so that I've lost! Jo: I think your surgeon's plan sounds very feasible, and sort of what I had planned to do for myself until I got that curveball today. Just going to contact my surgeon and let him clear it all up - maybe after Christmas though Thanks so much you all! ~Micah

Yeah, sometimes what the nut says, what the plan says, and what the doctor tells you all don't agree.. even on the same day! It's weird that way. I find the best most detailed plan is this one below.. early out, when in doubt.. I referred to it as my written materials were kinda lacking as well.. you had to infer from what was written where to go.. hope this helps! www.sleeveguide.com/uploads/1/7/9/4/1794785/dietguidevged42006feb.pdf

I think as long as you are concentrating on getting in all your FLUID first and then all your PROTEIN that should take care of carbs this early out: there isn't room. but later (or now, for some) it really does. hope the rant helped you! keep in mind a surgeon is for doing surgery, the eating plan may not be his strong point.

You're still healing. Your body has been through a lot in the past 4 weeks. Personally I would do as MPM suggested and work on fluids and protein. I agree with her also in the fact he is a surgeon, he knows what guts look like but perhaps not the best diet at each stage in a Sleever's Journey. Have you started walking yet? Nothing too crazy, but just walking will help lose a few pounds in the beginning.
Take care and keep going.

I agree with Multiple Pet Mom, I work in the medical field and find that surgeons seem to be the doctors whose people skills tend to ummmm, "need work" I guess is the most polite way to put it!
