I have always wondered about this. There have been many times I wish I had a scooter to help me get around but knew that it would be all down hill from that point on, so have forced myself to keep on moving on my own with no help, no mater how much pain I am in. What did you all do??

What did you all do?? Needs to be an "other" option! I used scooters in stores but walked otherwise. I did a lot of pain management stuff to be able to walk, and I was very limited in how far I could go by my breathing problems.

I'm with EN on this one---I used scooters in stores, rolled around in my computer chair at home, and saved my legs for elsewhere. I was told both my knees needed total replacement, but that at my pre-op weight it likely wouldn't be successful. I had my DS instead, and 8 years later I'm still using the knees I was born with. (*grin*)

I used scooters in stores and I have one for use in amusement parks. My knees are so messed up I cannot manage more than 1/2 mile without resting for an hour. First knee replacement March 28. Busch Gardens Williamsburg Va in late May. We'll see how it goes.

Walking, sitting, getting up basically living was painful to me. I'm moving toward 70 pounds lost and I'm in pain every day. My knee (both are bad but one is worse), my back and my shoulders are constant and without anti inflammatories, it's just a matter of waiting till I see if massive weight loss will help.

I used a cane and had a pain management guy working very hard to keep me mobile as long as possible. It worked.
Post op I started walking, which made my knee's scream as well as my low back. As my body go used to it. I have a tumor on the bone right by my knee. It worked for me, but took time.
Now I no longer need a cane. My pain management guy says I can do anything...lol.

I always share with people that since my DS and weigh loss I can now "walk and talk." I would be so SOB walking from my back door to the my car (about 20 yards) I would have to catch my breath before I could fasten my seat beat and start the car. I am forever grateful for my mobility!

I was able to walk, but it was painful, especially my lower extremity joints. I could walk for distances, but had to push through being short of breath.

I never used a scooter, but I was always the one to push the cart around the store - it helped me. My back was a real mess before I lost weight - just standing was awful. I too just did what I could do. Some days it was more than others.

So take some NSAIDs---you have a DS, don't you?

After gaining back 65 lbs., the arthritis pain in my hips is back, along with lower- and mid-back pain. I've had to pull out my cane from the back of the closet and gracelessly waddle around stores ... again. I do give thanks that I still have handicapped plates. Failure is more than a little depressing, but not so much that I don't take off the feedbag.

Yes, I used the electric carts in the stores. I also used a shopping cart in stores that didn't the riding ones such as Walgreen's. I used them like a walker because usually one does not need a cart if all one is buying is a tube of tooth paste, but walking was so difficult. Walking ? Who am I trying to kid? Just today I was thanking my lucky stars for being able to walk instead of waddle

I use a cane but it's not for mobility as much as STABILITY!!! I have motor neuropathy as well as arthritis in my spine. Both cause balance and pain issues beyond my being fat or skinny. www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/peripheralneuropathy/detail_peripheralneuropathy.htmImpaired function and symptoms depend on the type of nerves-motor, sensory, or autonomic-that are damaged. Motor nerves control movements of all muscles under conscious control, such as those used for walking, grasping things, or talking. Therefore, doctors may use terms such as predominantly motor neuropathy, predominantly sensory neuropathy, sensory-motor neuropathy, or autonomic neuropathy to describe a patient's condition. Before my back surgery in 2006, I was using a scooter as much as possible cause I was not able to count on my legs holding me up. Now, the scooter is a thing of the past but the cane remains. Liz

I was having trouble walking but I wan't at the point that I needed some aid. I would be able to walk 10 steps and had to rest because my back hurt so much. I couldn't stand for more then 5 mins at a time and now after losing almost a 100lbs I can stand for an hour before my back bothers me.

I forced myself to walk. Sat when I needed to. Used a cane when I needed to. Used the store cart if I felt symptoms of a pinched nerve. I discussed it with my doctor and she said the day I quit walking, I wouldn't be able to. There does come a point when help is needed and those were the times she wanted me to use assistance. Now I walk better. But often have more pain in hips. They are not use to being used so much. Hopefully it will improve as more weight comes off.
