I'm 8 weeks post-op, and craving sushi. My surgeon's PA said to go for it, but she would only eat a couple of pieces at first to test the water ...
What do you think? The rice scares me to death... but I haven't really had issues with other foods. Do you sushi? ;D

I do have sushi occassionally, I actually crave it. I'd be very careful at 8 weeks out, the rice may cause you some problems.
What I've found out from sushi? I don't have RH, yet if I eat sushi I better plan on eating a high protein snack within 2 hours or my sugar crashes terribly. Regular rice doesn't cause any issues, something about the sticky rice in a sushi roll I believe.

I LOVE SUSHI! I know at the place I go to, they can wrap your sushi in cucumber rather than rice. It may be something for you to try if you are worried about the rice. I know it's not the same flavor, but may save you some headache.

Hi Mez! There is also something called "Sashimi" which is raw fish without the rice. Just about any Japanese restaurant that serves sushi will also offer sashimi. I don't normally cite wikipedia but this is worth a read if you're new to sashimi: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi

Personally, I'd avoid the rice. I'm nearly 16 months out and I stick with sashimi which is just the fish. Tartar is also a great option. Or you can do naruto rolls with are wrapped in cucumber instead of rice but that might be a little hard to digest this early out.

After my original surgery in 2004 I could not tolerate rice, especially sticky rice for YEARS! Be careful!

I have to leave about half the rice, as it just "sits" in my stomach like a lead weight for hours.

Thanks, all. I've already had sashimi, just really craving a spicy tuna roll. I am scared of the rice... not sure what I'll do at this point!

Hand rolls are made with cucmber as noted above or seaweed. I just as for no rice. I get the seaweed because the taste to me is similar to a sushi roll and there is so much more meat! Looks like an asian burrito:)
I has a hand roll this way at about 7 weeks out and did fine with it.

over 2 years out and I can't eat rice by itself. Fine mixed in meatloaf or in stir fry, but a few bites of rice alone and I get nausea

I braved it! I had a spicy tuna roll, was able to eat 4 pieces, and had no issues. Napoleon (what I have named my pouch) actually enjoyed it more than some other things I have eaten. Yay for me!

Awesome! While I didn't have the RNY, sashimi-grade raw fish was one of the FEW animal proteins gentle enough for my poor, swollen tummy during the first few post-op months. It's some of the best quality protein you can find, and a wonderful post-op food.

What kind of weight loss surgery are you planning to get? Are you scheduled for it yet? Do you have questions that some of us might be able to help with? It looks like you've been doing some reading, since you found this thread. Please, start a thread and let us know how you are and where you are in the process. I'm 8 years out from my DS, and so glad I was able to have this surgery.

I would like to suggest that you make a list of all the pros and cons of both the surgeries you have mentioned. Which one better suits your lifestyle? If you really want to do yourself a favor, research ALL FOUR different weight loss surgeries, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each. Then make your decision, rather than let your doctor make it for you. Happy reading!

Sorry, don't mean to sway your decision, but please eliminate lapband from your choices. I had that and ended up vomiting every day, I'm not alone. Many of my peers who had it also vomited after every meal. It's not worth it for the weight that I lost (60 pounds then gained back about 30.) Now, maybe you'll have better success than me, but I can't let this opportunity go by and not say eliminate the choice of lapband. I'm now a successful DS (lost about 175 pounds) and am thinner than I ever thought possible. It's both restrictive and you malabsorb, just what I needed to be a success. Others may be able to give you opinions on the other surgeries, sorry, I just can't stay quiet when I hear someone is considering getting something that destroyed my quality of life for so long.
Good luck, Kelly
