My doctor (Rabkin) doesn't have a liquid diet requirement, just a requirement that when you feel ready to start food, it needs to be "slippery." Eggs, moist fish, that sort of thing. And you have to be getting in all your fluids before you focus on eating. Anyhow, I had been all liquid all the time, thinking it would be weeks before I was ready to eat anything and then all of a sudden tonight I felt hunger for the first time. Not a crazy amount, but a little.
I was ahead on my liquids, so I made myself an over-easy egg in butter with a tiny bit of salt. It was the best tasting egg ever. I couldn't eat all of it but boy did I enjoy what I ate.
I am just so shocked at how I feel. I feel good and I am shockingly losing weight quickly. I can't believe it!
Edit to say that I had my surgery last Thursday, so I'm freshly post-op.

Congrats on getting your fluids in so early. Welcome to the Loser's Bench. I hope to be joining you sometime this year.
It's always nice hear from a Rabkin-ite lol.
Does he require a pre-op diet of any kind? Just curious.
How was St Mary's? How long were you in the Hospital?
Anything else you care to share? I LOVE the details, there are NO TMI's LOL

Rabkin doesn't require a pre-op diet. That having been said, I started cutting down myself naturally, as I wanted to shrink the liver a little if possible. However, there's no need to go on a pre-op liquid diet or anything like that, other than the day before surgery when you are restricted to liquids.
He also doesn't require a post-op liquid diet, but you have to get in 1.5 liters of fluid minimum daily. I have not found that to be a problem and usually exceed 2 liters. I drink iced tea (Tejava brand), broth, and water. It's been easy to get all the liquids in but I should say that I used to drink a lot of fluid pre-surgery as well so this isn't a big change for me. He allows his patients to start mushy food in the hospital in general, but I didn't.
He doesn't require a post-op liquid diet but any food you do eat has to be slippery. No hard-boiled eggs, only softboiled or over easy, that sort of thing. I went to St. Mary's, but if I were to choose again, I'd go with El Camino. I've been a patient in both before, and El Camino was better. I wasn't as impressed with St. Mary's. They were continually short-staffed while I was there, and I was one of the healthier patients in the ward, so I feel like I didn't get much attention. That worked out okay, but it could have been pretty bad (e.g., long wait times after I pressed a call button). It was all okay, but I felt better taken care of at El Camino when I was there.

Thanks for the quick response. El Camino in Mtn View?? I didn't realize Dr Rabkin did his surgeries there. You mentioned the "ward" at St. Mary's, I was under the impression that all of St. Mary's rooms were private. Sorry about your experience. S~ Rabkin doesn't require a pre-op diet. Oh, it wasn't bad. I don't want to leave you with that impression. Just not as good as my prior experience at El Camino. I had a private room at St. Mary's.
Dr. Rabkin does operate at El Camino.

congratulations! your experience is very different from mine, I struggled very hard to get up to 64 oz of liquid - it took me a week to get there.
just go slow on food, you sound like you are doing very well.
