hi all, I have been reading your posts and have gotten a lot of info that has been very helpful to me but I haven't seen a post that is exactly what I need to read about. My story: i had a Rny gastric bypass in 1997 without the malabsorption part. He reattached the small intestine as close as he could. That was his procedure. I went from 330 to 200 in about a year and a half. Still about 50 pounds from a normal weight. I still felt successful. I have since gained another 50 leaving me at a bmi of 37. There are no surgeons in my town that have ever done a Rny revision. In the last 5 years this surgeon has done gastric bypass on my hubby and my daughter and I have so much respect for this man. After many months of him researching and speaking to other surgeons around the country he found that the best revision for a failing Rny is an undo of my gastric bypass including reattaching my remnant stomache, and doing a gastric sleeve with a duodenal switch. He has never done one but says that there is no question in his mind, after much research that he can perform this procedure. If I decide to proceed he will find surgeons that he can assist before doing mine. Has anyone here had this exact procedure and any comments would be very much appreciated. So glad I found this site!

Disclaimer: The only bariatric surgery I've had is the DS. Regarding difficulty of what your surgeon proposes..... Many, if not most, respected and successful DS surgeons won't do a revision, most especially one from an RNY to a DS. It probably is the most difficult, requiring the most skill of all. It's why there are so few true RNY to DS revision surgeons in the country. There's a lot to be said for a good relationship with your surgeon, and it sounds like he really wants to be able to help you, and it's great that he sees the advantages of a DS for you. But I wouldn't be the one that someone learned on. The surgeon who gave me my DS is, in my opinion, a wonderful surgeon, and has done hundreds, if not thousands, of DS's. But I wouldn't go to him for a revision.
Edited to add: Sorry, I forgot the whole "welcome!" thing. Seriously, welcome. I hope you are able to find a less risky option.

Hello and Welcome!
Cindy, who used to post frequently on here had a RNY to DS revision with Dr. David Greenbaum. I had a lapband to DS revision with him. Caprice is right, not many will do the revisions and he does them open because of the difficulty. He lectures around the country regarding this and is often an expert on the subject called upon for different things. I love my relationship with him as my surgeon and he's an experienced revision surgeon so I know how you feel, but he's done many, many revisions that's why I used him.
I agree with everything Caprice said, be careful, I wouldn't want something to be too short or go wrong. Mine was a glowing success, by the way, I'm 18 months out and have lost all my excess weight and then some. I'm 5'8 1/2" and take a size 2 jeans, I'm on the thin side now - this wasn't even a dream 18 months ago, I just wanted to be normal.
Good luck with your decisions, Kelly

Lesa - welcome to the boards. Like Caprice, I will disclaim that I have only had the DS. I totally appreciate your surgeon doing the research and speaking to other surgeons about your situation. Have you consulted with any other surgeons, particularly one who is an expert with the DS. I guess every surgeon has to do the "first" one on somebody.
I'm not sure where you're located. My surgeon, Dr. Hazem Elariny, has been doing the DS for about 15 years and is one of the best in the country. I know he's done the DS as revisions from RNY and band. He's in Northern Virginia (Vienna) and operates out of Fairfax Hospital.
it's a thought.

Please, please do not let a surgeon do your revision who is not very experienced doing revisions. Do not be a guinea pig. You might be very, very sorry. I realize this means you may have to travel for surgery. It's worth it. Where are you located? What is the name of the local surgeon?
