Has anyone with the DS gained weight from taking antidepressants? I know many people gain weight on antidepressants but I thought the DS would prevent this?

I've heard that but I take Trazadone as a sleep aid...and it's actually an antidepressant. I'm over 8 years out and I've actually LOST 20 lbs in the past year. So you be the judge. I imagine it depends on what kind you take.

Thanks for your reply. Yes the one I am taking is supposed to be low risk for weight gain, but the stats show that 30% of users gain weight with it. That is a pretty high risk to me. I am definitely gaining and when I low carb I don't lose. It is pretty scary.

As I said I take Trazadone before bed...it really helps me to sleep and I feel great the next day...maybe you could try it - ask your doc and see what he/she says.

Thanks for the suggestion, but because my depression tends to manifest in excessive sleeping I don't think that particular medication would be a good match for me.
I should probably have a consultation to see about switching to something else though.

Hi, Challie,
Yes, definitely see your doctor about switching to another antidepressant. There are many options.

Also remember antidepressants don't have calories. It still comes down to what we choose to eat and how much. If my main staple is still protein I'm fine. If I'm choosing to snack on sugar and high carbs, well, I will pay for it. There are also antidepressants that aren't known for causing hunger increase, too. Wellbutrin is my drug of choice.

Two of the best things you can do are: start logging all your food intake and walk. If it's too cold to go outside, walk inside, dance in place, just move. Exercise increases endorphins and burns calories. You may not realize how many carbs you are actually taking in..so just get back to the basics and log it. There are a lot of really good antidepressants and one does not fit all. Cymbalta, Effexor, Wellbutrin have good record of weight loss as side effect, so you could check with your doctor to see if these could work for you.
