Good to know. How can I post?
I had a bowel blockage this weekend and had emergency surgery and I have the worst swollen lower abdomen in Texas. Seriously, it's really swollen. I have diarreaha and feel pretty lousy. Any ideas?
Should my abdomen below the waist be swollen. I've gained nearly 10 lbs and for three days only had ice cubes. So I don't think it's food. I can barely eat...just don't want to.

You may have an abscess or seroma since you are obviously gaining fluid weight. Don't wait to let this get worse. Please go asap and take care of yourself.

What does resect mean? I'll answer if I know what you are asking. I went back to the ER. Got what I wanted when I came in after probably $6,000 worth of tests. Lassix and some potassium why don't docs listen to the patient? I'm not taking the potassium, cause I honestly think that's what puffed me up prior to leaving the hospital the first time. I'm down some in terms of fluid levels, but not completely. They did another CT scan and said everything looked fine...I was concerned that the ER surgeon had sewed something together that didn't need to be put back together. They did a sonagram of my leg veins and said I didn't have a blood clot, multiple blood tests and so all of that checked out. Even my son was amazed at the size of my left foot. We have named it the football. Thanks for you words of encouragement. This is the third trip in three years and finally my blockage showed up...so in reality, I've probably had this for quite some time. Who knew?

By "resect", NYB means, "Did they have to remove part of your intestine?"
Blood supply can be cut off to the intestine when there is a blockage. If it is not caught in time, it dies aka becomes necrotic. The dead tissue has to be removed and the intestine reconnected.
Did they do your CT scan with contrast?
At least you are shrinking now. If it stops, you'll need to be seen again. You have a nice son. I remember messaging with him when you had trouble getting on the board.

Oh yes, I've had two - one with contrast pre surgery and one post surgery when I went back to the ER with the swelling. I don't think they had to remove any of the bowel...it was located in my small intestine. He talked about having two major bands of scar tissue that he had to remove and he said some other stuff, but I was pretty out of it at the time. I'll get the copies of my operative report and the CT scan reports plus anything else they have. I'm not seeing the actual surgeon on Thursday where I'll get my staples out, but I will talk with him - he's seen the CT scans. Then on the 1st I go to my GP and she will have copies of all the stuff and I can get a look at them then. The main thing I'm dealing with now is my nerves are starting to wake up and I'm having all manner of weird pains and aches. Today I nearly fell over when my right foot went to sleep, I'm talking dead...it took it several minutes to wake up. My panni is so bad, I wish he could have snipped a little off for me. Thank you for the kind words about Lee, he's a supper son. Lucky duck is taking his family to the Texas coast on Tuesday, but I've alerted my neighbor to let her know I'm not at 100%. She's very nice and even offered to take me to get my staples out...but I figure if he's taking them out on Thursday, then I'm good to drive. It isn't far - if he tells me it's too soon then I'll go straight back home. Better to ask for forgiveness, right? Thanks for telling me what a resection means. Nope, I didn't have one of those. Thank goodness. I was scared, but the surgeon on duty said, I must have the surgery and that night...like it was already 3 AM, so I just bit the bullet and let him do it. What else was I going to do?

Oh, I forgot to ask. How long will the runny bowels last? I seem to be able to make it to the potty, but I haven't had the runs in ages. Even with the medication for pain I'm taking I still have the runs. I'm barely eating anything...just not hungry at all. But what I do consume, it comes right out again.

It is good that they operated right away. That is what saved your intestines from going necrotic by getting the blood flowing through them again. Excellent that you had no trouble convincing them to do the CT with contrast. That was a struggle for me. I would take your neighbor up on that ride. If your foot falls asleep while you are driving, that would be very dangerous to yourself and everyone else on the road. Your runny bowels are likely from your body getting rid of the excess fluid. Is the swelling still going down? I'm going to start a new thread for you in the DS section and move all these posts over there. I think you were still heavily sedated when you posted this in the insurance section and I wanted to wait until your head was clear to move it.

I might finally be able to use my bowel obstruction surgery experience now! I'm so sorry you went thru this but really happy to hear you didn't lose any intestines. I had my emergency surgery last October and had several meltdowns post-op. I kept worrying something wasn't right or I was never going to be normal again. It took a full 8 weeks for me to feel back to normal. It was WAAAAY worse than my DS. If you need someone who has been there, contact me. Hope you heal quickly. Take it easy so you don't end up with a hernia.
