I just had the DS surgery 3 days ago. I have been burping a lot but nothing in the way of gas or bowel movements. I decided on an out of state doctor since there were no options where I live. Recovering with family. Just woke up in the middle of the night and had diarrhea all over me. I never felt the urge to get up and go. It just leaked out. I'm TERRIFIED that I'll be wearing a diaper for the rest of my life!!! Has this happened to anyone else?!?!? Does it subside?! !!!!

How long did they keep you in the hospital? Did you stay local for a few days following surgery in case there were any issues? Many surgeons with out of state patients require them to stay local until after their first followup (usually a week or 10 days following surgery). You won't have any bowel movements until you eat food. Was your DS performed lap? If so, that's the burping. They blow you up like a balloon so the surgeon has more room. That will subside. If you have any questions or concerns this soon after surgery, CALL YOUR SURGEON.

I had a bowel movement before I left the hospital, the morning I was discharged. I also woke up to gas coming out without effort and it being more than gas and running to the bathroom as fast as my 5 days post op body could get me there.

Sorry, nothing to add to the advice that has already been given (by those I always listen to, by the way.) I just wanted to say I remember weird occurrences right after surgery and I'm sure you will be fine, though it would be a good idea to check with the your doctor. Were you on heavy painkillers? Perhaps you had the urge but didn't feel it with the painkillers and sleeping. You are not destined to wearing protection the rest of your life, I'm sure everything will work out in time. Hang in there and take care of yourself!
Good luck with your post-surgical time, Kelly

Go sit on the toilet when you think you have to fart. It won't be this way forever, but NOTHING feels the way it used to feel. There will be a new normal once your body adjusts, but for now, don't trust a fart.

I can't believe that you are not still near your surgeon so soon out. I traveled for surgery, too, and a ten day stay (including the surgery) was required. Some length of post-op recovery time near your surgeon is the standard. You are fresh out of surgery and loose bowels are common during this time. But, waking up covered in diarrhea? Not the norm. You need to head towards the bathroom the minute that you feel the need to go or pass gas. For now, there is no such thing as holding it for a bit. You can not share a bathroom with anyone at this point. There is no time to wait for someone else to finish. If it feels like the urge has passed, go anyway. It may not give you time to get to the bathroom when it comes back. I agree with everyone else: Call your surgeon. Also, are you on a feeding tube? How much liquid have you managed daily? When do you start on mushy food? And, yes, who is your surgeon? Hang in there. This is not permanent.

It wasn't right away after surgery, but a few weeks after, 3 times I woke up to what you described. I take medication to sleep, was on pain meds from surgery and coupled with the pure exhaustion from recovery, it happened. I awoke right after with the horrible humiliating feeling, but it hasn't happened since, and I'm 11 months out. And like others said, you can not trust passing any gas away from the toilet for quite some time.

Yes. It only happened to me once, but I was still in the hospital so like you, it was probably day 2 or 3. I had been sound asleep, too. I was mortified! I actually cried and locked myself in the bathroom! The nurse was SO sweet. She kept knocking on the door telling me it was ok and to come out lol. It wasn't all over me, though, it was in the sheets. She had already changed the bed and was so kind, I'll never forget it. I really think it was the heavy sleep mixed with those pain meds and my intestines "waking up". Don't worry. Honestly, it never happened to me again.

This is not the first time I've heard of this happening. I think exhaustion and recovery can certainly contribute. I know that I was so full of gas for about a week after surgery. That gas wants to come out and will take all the shit in your system with it. This is not your new normal. Things will get better or change for several months as your body and you adjust to your new configuration. I was up crapping all night, many times, the first few weeks after surgery and thought I would live like that forever. Not even close to being true. You will get better and knowing when you need to hit the bathroom. Good luck and take care.
