Good Morning, My doctor's office is closed and I have a question. I'm in terrible pain from a knee problem, not sure what is wrong so far. I do know my arthritis is bad and I had my cortisone injection about two weeks ago. I went out in the snow hiking Thursday and then went four-wheeling in a jeep afterwards. Guess being skinnier has me thinking I'm a teenager again LOL. Well, my knee is terribly hurt and my family doctor called in a prescription for Hydrocodone and Carisoprodol (Soma) to try and relieve the pain. She's actually out with the flu but trusts my judgment. Unfortunately, these are not working too well. I get relief for about an hour or hour and a half and then it seems to be out of my system. Would his be because of the malabsorption? Any suggestions on how to get this to work better? I'm planning on seeing an orthopedic doctor Monday but would like some relief now! This really stinks because I'm involved in a tennis cancer fundraiser tonight and can't play. I'll go but would like to have blown everyone's socks off! Not a chance of playing now. My husband will come and help me get around. Any advice you may have is always appreciated! I'm not sure if this is muscular or related to the arthritis or the bone. Thanks in advance for anything you may add to help me! Have a wonderful Saturday, Kelly

Kelly, I'm so sorry! I don't think it's a malabsorption problem. Hydrocodone still works for me, anyway.
Given your pain level, I would recommend that you go to the ER right now and get an X-ray or whatever type of scan they recommend. I know. I know. Not the way you want to spend your Saturday, but you need to know what type of injury this is in order to treat it properly and address your pain level. You may have a torn ligament or even a fracture. Don't use any heat or cold until you know exactly what you are dealing with!
Please let us know what happens, my friend.

Have a wonderful Saturday, Kelly Unless the pills you have are extended release of some sort, I doubt the malabsorption would have that big of an impact. I've had to take Hydrocodone many times since my DS for surgeries and broken bones and didn't have issues absorbing it. I'm a bit worried that the pain level is pretty high because the injury isn't mild. I agree, I think you should go to the ER. Or maybe urgent care? Is there an urgent care near you? When I broke my wrist I found the ortho practice in our town had evening and weekend walkin hours. Keep us posted.

I think you may have a bad injury - to the ER or to an urgent care asap.

I agree that you should go get it looked at ASAP but in the meantime try ice and NSAIDS. Knees swell and I would bet there is some inflammation in there causing pain. Good luck! Shawn

Go to the ER or an urgent care center...don't fool around with that knee.

Kelly - get yourself a good knee guy. Sounds like the medicine that your primary prescribed is not strong enough for that type of pain. Remember to ice, elevate and rest. Before activity - stretch. This is what I do before I am doing any kind of exercise. Snow hiking - with snow shoes? I imagine that you are raising your knees higher with the snow. I would get an appt. with the orthopedist or call him to get a prescription for something more appropriate.
My orthopedist gave me 2 options for my "lack of cartilage" - lose weight and strengthen your knees. I have done both and have not seen him since last August.

Thanks so much for all your advice! I'm happy to say at 5::00 last night, I took off my brace and the pain was gone, thank goodness. From Thirsday until then, it was terrible. I know I have bad arthritis, it just felt different. My orthopedic has recommended gel insertion but I'm getting a second opinion. He said the cortisone stops working after having it for so many years.
So, even though the pain is gone, I'm still following up. Cindy, I really thought with the weight loss and all the tennis, this wouldn't happen anymore.
Have a great day and thanks, Kelly

Kelly I hear you loud and clear - I have arthritis as well and the crunching knees which is very common for women. I also have a brace and I thought you had an injury as well. I have refused the gel insertion. It is like oil slick that lubricates the bones. I am not ready for that yet and I am afraid I would not consider a knee replacement until I am in my 60's. But losing weight had helped my poor knees and I have strengthened and enjoy looking at the muscles now. I love the fact that I can feel my ribs and other bones.
But you were snow hiking so maybe using different muscles than you would with regular hiking and you injured something. It is good just to get an ant inflammatory medicine and I keep 2 ice bags. One for back of my knee and one on top.
Glad you are feeling better and the pain has subsided.
