Is it possible for a ds patient to have food blockage issues? I am 6 months post ds and i would ssy about 3 times i have had pain which reminds me of the pan i had with my rny when food would block my pouch. I would have to throw up until the culprit was vomited up. Tonight i had this pain and i threw up a piece of gristle from my steak supper. I know i have a pyloric valve but is there somewhere else this could get jammed up to cause this pain?

I'm not sure but I would eat more slowly and perhaps not anything as heavy as steak just for a while. I know by six months you should be able to eat anything but sometimes our newly DSed bodies can reject food.
For example I'm over six years out and for some unknown reason, I threw up tonight shortly after dinner. I was fine afterwards but I guess I over ate, but I don't think so...haven't the slightest idea of what caused it.
I doubt it's an obstruction since you can get relief after throwing up. Keep an eye on it, should it happen again, call your doc and see what he/she says. In the meantime, like I said, just eat slowly and wait in-between bites. I know you shouldn't have to do that, but until your tummy settles down, I think I would at least try to take it easy.
Feel better soon.

Why are you eating gristle? You need to ease up on stuff that is tough to digest - seems like your system isn't ready for it. Also you need to chew very thoroughly, eat slowly, take small bites, and avoid things like gristle for now.

Hummmmmm Almost 13 years post op and I still occasionally vomit. I can usually attribute it to something tough, dry or with jagged edges (well done hash browns for example). It always seems to come back to slowing down and chewing thoroughly. It's often difficult in dining out. I usually only eat about a 1/4 of what is served and then take it home.

And just for a different perspective - I am almost 15 years out and I have never vomited in all that time except maybe for the very very beginning.

Ok NYCB how do you manage that? I HATE to throw up...just detest it. But I do it when my body says I need to run to the bathroom. A lot of people eat gristle, they really like it...personally, I hate it but now pork fat is another thing entirely. Hope you had a good Holliday Season.

Well in case your throwing up could be GERD related, are you on a PPI? I take 20mg of prilosec every evening. But other than that, I don't manage it. I just don't throw up, even when I'm full I never get nauseated. I eat like a "normal" person meaning sometimes I'm stuffed, sometimes not, I eat everything. I don't know why I don't throw up, just like I don't know why you do throw up...

Yep, I take an Rx PPI...oh well, I haven't thrown up in ages....maybe it was just my day to throw up. Who knows?
In the past two years I've had two occasions when I ended up in the hospital ER. I couldn't stop throwing up. Both times I had been out to lunch with friends...had good food and then on my way home I started to throw up....you should see me trying to pull over so I can throw up on the side of the road on an interstate, not a fun thing to have to do. I am normally empty but the nausea keeps coming.
I now have some pills I will take if this happens again. I hope they will stop it if this ever happens again.

Cheryl, do you think you have some sort of problem with the pyloric valve? Were you hurting before you swallowed your vitamins?
Sometimes when I was early out...to me you are still early out I would throw up because some of the food I had just eaten hadn't digested as soon as it should have. Like last night...it was at least 15-30 minutes after I had eaten.
I don't have an answer to your concern but I'm just telling you that you may now or at least for a while have a very sensitive stomach. Knowing this, you should chew every bite....I'm talking mush before you swallow. I hope you can get some relief. If not see the doc and if all else fails, I will tell you that my tummy has gotten better as time has gone by.

I take a PPI as well. Be sure to have an endoscopy every once in a while. After I vomit...I feel just fine, and usually go back to eating. I've even thought about mucous issues. I've just accepted it as a way of life. The real problem is that once I know I'm going to vomit...I never make it to the bathroom...it's fast. Much to the family's distress!

It could be the amount/volume of food you are eating. You are only 6 months out. Eat smaller portions more frequently. At a meal, only eat 1/4 of what is on your plate. Put your fork down and, if you are still hungry 15 minutes later, have some more. Eat no more than another 1/4 and rest 15 minutes again. Stop completely when you are no longer hungry no matter how much is left on your plate.
