I am 5 weeks post-op today and for the past few mornings, when I use the bathroom, there is blood on the toilet paper. I'm a little unsure what is going on because I take the depo birth control shot and it has completely stopped my periods. Haven't had one in over 5 years. Is there any chance my period is coming back due to surgery? I was also recently treated for a UTI and did a round of antibiotics for 3 days. They did a urine culture and said I had an infection. So maybe thats causing the blood? Anyone thoughts would be greatly appreicitated!

It's just a thought as I have no medical background, but perhaps your periods had stopped because of your weight. Now that you're five weeks post-op and probably down quite a few pounds, maybe they have started again or you are lightly spotting as your body adjusts. I would give the doctor a call on Monday (the one who gives the depo shot - I get it, too) and see what he/she thinks of this. I'm thinking it has to do with the weight lost since surgery. I'm sure it's very annoying, though! Good luck...

Your body is flushed with hormones when you lose weight rapidly because it is stored in your fat. This is one reason why we recommend that you use two forms of birth control for the first couple of years.
I would put in a tampon before you go to sleep to discern the source of the blood. If it comes out clean, your UTI might be back. UTI's can be very tenacious buggers.
You should know right away if the tampon is clean. If so, make a call to your doctor to get it checked first thing Monday morning.

Fat produces estrogen. As you lose lots of fat very rapidly, your estrogen production plummets. Therefore until your body stabilizes it's a good idea to use extra protection, just in case.
Definitely do the tampon thing - if it's menstrual blood your tampon will be bloody. If it's urinary blood, the tampon will not be bloody.
Also, it would not be surprising for you to have some "menstrual" bleeding - your hormones are shifting very rapidly now.
