Yes, I am alive. :-)
Coming on here to write an update has been on my to do list forever, so I figured I might as well just jump on a do a quick post while I have insomnia.
Last week marked one-year from surgery date. My weight was 280 before surgery and is now stable at 175. I hit the 100 pound weight loss mark last May/June and have pretty much stayed in the mid 170s since then -- 173 one day, 176 another, 170 once, but it seems my body wants me right about 175. Normal BMI is 172 so I'm pretty much there. I would of course like to get below 170 and see the 160's, but this will of course require a lot more effort - especially with maintaining.
So pretty much lost 100 pounds the first 7 months, and have been stable since about spring.
On my bucket list was to purchase one item from Abercrombie & Fitch that I could actually put on. (I don't support the company, I know they are not friendly to people with weight problems). But growing up all I could ever buy there was the cologne. They knew I wasn't there for the clothes -- so I always said if I hit goal someday I would go in there and buy a shirt, lol. So I did.
So, for a fun experiment, I got the tight clothes, dyed my hair blonde, and got blue contacts. So, until next month anyway, I'm a normal BMI blue-eyed blondie.
My one complaint is the bathroom problems, but life is all about trade-offs, and it's a sacrifice that was worth making IMHO. The four year relationship I was in at the time of surgery was with me for my whole journey on here so they were understanding and knew what to expect. (I imagine that's how it is for married couples on here with one having surgery). Now, however, as I have since gone back into the dating scene -- it kind of sucks having to explain the bathroom issues eight weeks in to prep them before taking a trip or sharing a hotel room. But that's the price, and I would have been over 300 pounds now without the surgery so I would I do it over? Absofuckinglutely.
Thank you to everyone who followed me, put up with me, and gave invaluable feedback to me over the last three years!!!! You were with me for the entire journey.
I should also thank Dr. Fielding. No surgeon wanted to do a DS on me because of my esophageal problems (a hiatal hernia, severe GERD, motility issues, etc.), and all pushed me towards an RNY because of such. I went in scheduled for an RNY and in the holding area Dr. Fielding saw my face and said “You don’t seem excited about this. You have been going on about the DS for years. I am telling you there is nothing that precludes you from a DS despite what others are telling you.” He insisted my severe hiatal hernia was the cause of everything. So I gave him full discretion to do either based on how bad the esophageal stuff was once he got inside of me – and I woke up with the DS surgery I wanted, and pictures taken inside of me showing how much of my stomach had been up in my esophagus.
