Two weeks ago, I ate something bad... I think it was some undercooked chicken, but not really sure.
Anyway, it caused much intestinal distress for about 4 days.. and some of the effects lasted for an entire week. I figured that I had lost some good bacteria in the struggle with whatever bug I had try to take over, so I started taking a probiotic. I'll say the brand, but not really looking for another to try, I took Ultra-Flora. I started this on the 7th day after symtoms began, I took 2 a day for a couple, and it got my system back in line and feeling better. I then dropped it to one a day.
I've been doing my best not to weight everyday since i've been pretty stable for more than 6 months, but this Saturday, I weighed in the morning, and I was 155lbs! Thats a gain of 5 pounds!! This was after morning rituals, and before breakfast. Normal is 150, on the nose..
So I deduced, since the only thing I changed was that I started taking the probiotic, that it had caused my weight gain, I stopped taking it that day, and this morning I was back down to my normal 150!
Has anybody else experienced weight gain from their probiotic?

Very interesting. I've been taking one probiotic per day since I had surgery so I guess I wouldn't notice if it was keeping weight on. I use the CVS brand. This is interesting...

I take a probiotic every day. It has been a big help to me. No problems with weight gain from it. I can't think there is anything about an intestinal bacteria that would cause weight gain, but I'm not an expert.

Only thing I could think of if the pro biotic is causing issues would be water weight?

Naw I don't think so. What did you eat during your tummy troubles...did you drink a lot of fluid...sometimes fluid can actually make me gain weight temporarily.
Probiotics, I really doubt it. Nice try though :0

I really didn't change anything in my diet, except take the probiotic.

Fluctuations are normal. Fluid loss and retention, hormonal shifts, increased absorption, shifts in digestive environment, etc. Stick with your program - protein, limited complex carbs, lots of fluids. Stalls are normal too. I highly, highly doubt that a probiotic caused weight gain. Stay off the scale and just keep doing what you should. The DS is not magic…it works differently for different people and in different ways with different timing. You cannot expect to weigh exactly 150 on the nose every day forever - it's just not realistic.

I would agree with you normally, but I ate nothing out of my normal, I think I got some bad chicken, or not cooked well enough. It was just a chicken breast that i baked in the oven, and had refridgerated it for a single day.. I ate it in the afternoon on a friday after work Saturday morning I started in with BAD issues.. Probiotics, I really doubt it. Nice try though :0 if it was water weight, not sure why, I had not increased my fluids, if anything, I was losing water faster than I was replacing it on saturday and sunday after I ate the chicken. Tuesday I was able to resume my normal diet. (after starting the probiotic).

"Water weight" just means your body may have been retaining fluid, and therefore you might have weighed more.

but 5 lbs, in a matter of days? seems a bit extreme. I did not notice a difference in output vs consumption either.. Probably never be explained fully, just weird that it coincided with starting and ending the probiotic.

This is just an aside re probiotics. I don't take any. A while back I did take them. The one time I had a couple of weeks of rough digestion. I stopped taking probiotics just to see what would happen, and lo and behold, things got better. So who knows. We are all different, and things change, fluctuate, go back and forth, etc. And it's not always DS related.

I totally understand this, but it just happened VERY quickly (gain and loss) and coincided with starting and stopping the probiotic.. it happened very acutely,and not over time, as I expect it would.. I don't expect it to stay the same. a pound or two, yes, but 5? I have been within a 1/2lb every morning for the last couple months. before that, I had gained a couple. but thats all. I'm not in a stall, not actively seeking more weight loss, and am in self-proclaimed 'maintenance mode'.

I"m just saying that you have to expect things to change, over and over and over again. There is no such thing a maintenance mode long term - I mean that maintaining weight will mean different things at different times - over and over and over again.

I know that... Your missing my point. Something caused me to gain and lose 5 lbs in 4-5 days. The only thing that changes was the start and stop of taking the probiotic..

Everyone is different. I will continue to take it because it makes such a big difference in my digestion. I have tried to stop taking it, but my system works much better when I continue to take it. I am still in the weight loss phase. There have been no indications that it has slowed my weight loss at all.
It's important to remember that YMMV with many things.

Please don't stop your probiotic because one person had a weird thing that may or may not have anything to do with the probiotic. There is absolutely no reason to think it is causing you to gain weight. Weird stuff happens. If the probiotic helps your digestion, by all means keep taking it.

I agree, if it helps you, keep taking it. This is only my experience with them. By no means it is law that taking them will have this effect on you.
AND,
I don't have any proof that the probiotic caused the gain, or the loss. At this point, it is purely coincidental.

I think it's a learning curve for all of us. The first year or so of the surgery isn't the best measurement of how things are down the line. The reality is the surgery can work very efficiently, do all the work for awhile (which how long that 'while' is also varies) regardless of what one eats. I think you're just now getting to the 'level playing' field part of maintenance life, where you have a more realistic baseline picture, what 'normal' people go through. We never noticed 5 lbs before, you know? When we were 200, 300 et al pounds. Women are even more prone to fluctuations due to having higher body fat, womanly stuff. The positive is you are keeping an eye on yourself to stay in check so that 5 lbs doesn't become 10 lbs, 10 to 20 lbs and so on. I don't take probiotics, but I've had to sort out if certain medications, my hernias, my excess skin have anything to do with my weight; so I get the coincidence and why you would wonder.
