Today, Sept 5, 2014. is my 2 yr surgiversary!
To recap:
Started Journey : Feb 2012
Surgery date: Sept 5 2012
HW: 310
SW: 289
LW 142
CW 149.2
Previous BMI: 47
Current BMI 22.5
After surgery, I was back to work in 2.5 weeks, (for those of you researching this surgery, I WAS NOT TYPICAL!! Normal recovery is 3-6 weeks)
At a year and a half, I had a Hernia repair, followed by GB removal (I feel that the GB failure was caused by the DS) and Petersen's hernia repair 2 days later. It was rough!
Otherwise, Healthy, happy, and loving it! No co-morbitities left, I had sleep apnea (undiagnosed), border line BP numbers, Knee problems, and many other minor afflictions caused by obesity.
Now, I can do my happy dance, and not run out of breath!! Truely a LIFE changing decision!
It's not all sugar and spice and everything nice. Poop smells worse, farts smell worse, and there's more of all of it. It smells worse even when I behave with the carbs. My tummy grumbles alot, OUT LOUD! There is some differences I never expected. I can 'feel' food move around in my gut. I can tell if food is good or bad for me just by the feeling I get right after eating it. I was never able to do that before surgery. If i could have, It may have been easier to lose weight to start with. There's all kinds of little things I notice, some good, some bad, some just plain interesting.
I don't do structured exercise, but am active when i am home, but, I do have a desk job, so i still do lots of sitting. I did find out that I'm in pretty good physical condition for a person that weighs 150, but I wasn't for a person weighing 310..
I have mentored three people through the journey, and still continue to support two of them, as one is 6 months out, and the other one is 2.5 months. We all used Dr. Marshall in Peoria, IL. He is my pick for a DS in Illinois!
To everyone looking into this surgery, You have to make your own call as to WHY you want this surgery, and COMMIT to a super high ANIMAL PROTEIN-BASED diet, life long Vitamins (lots of them), blood tests, and regular doctors visits. Please know that this surgery is NOT a cure all, It is a tool to help those of us that have tried (and i mean really tried) everything else to lose weight.
There are some that have had this surgery to cure Diabetes Type II, and I know of only one person that it did not totally cure it.
Good Luck to all perspective DSr's!
To my Freinds here, I love you all, and I still learn from each of you as you learn from my experience as well. I wouldn't be in such a good place with the DS if it hadn't been for the wonderful group of Vets, past and present, that have guided me for the last two years. THANK YOU!!!!
Old Me, (and my wife)
Us now.
