Hello, I thought I was having a great day, didn't need any pain medication at all today (thank you for encouraging that vets). But then I started experiencing my problems eating over 2 ounces (this is not new.) I started out with my 40 gram Isopure protein drink. Then I had tuna for lunch. Two hours later I had some Baby Swiss Cheese but could only eat an ounce as I was still full from the tuna which was 2.5 ounces. Two hours later I had cooked for the first time since surgery (my husband is a gem) and made delicious boneless, skinless, chicken thighs with very light BBQ sauce. I put 4 ounces on my plate with a miniature potato. I ate two ounces and was so full, one more bite would have made me sick. I gave my husband my lone potato and wrapped up the other two ounces of chicken to try in two hours. I know I'm supposed to be trying to eat more but I really don't want to vomit! I'm hoping this is because I'm 6 weeks out and fairly new to this game. My sweetheart said I should be happy because I'm not overeating but I'm nervous because the advice I'm taking in says eat that animal protein! As of now, I have 75 protein in, 17 carbs and 16 fat. Should I add another 40 gram protein drink or am I okay for 42 days out? My husband said stop worrying and ask the experts online. As always, your advice is appreciated! Kelly Kelly, I'm 6/30 with Greenbaum and 2oz is my limit - anything else and I am in so much pain. Literally, I'm not limited as to what I eat, only how much. I focus mainly on protein and don't avoid fat - though I do eat carbs probably more than 50 grams/day because (1) I have no energy - I work out 3x/wk with a trainer and walk about 20 miles/wk (2) carbs are the only thing that don't make me nauseous - I am nauseous 1/2 the time. 2 days ago I made a big bowl of mussels marinara and ate 3 - done, no more!

Do you eat all day long, Michael? Every time you are hungry?
You are not yet two months out, a 2oz. at a time limit is entirely normal. This is why you must eat so frequently during the day. Even now at 7 years out, I get nauseous if I let myself stay hungry for too long.
You have no energy because your body is still healing from surgery. Some people would just now be returning to work at your stage.
That said, I think your workout routine is a bit much. Walking 20 miles in a week is fine, but you are pushing things with the three times a week with a trainer on top of that. Stressing your body so much while it is still healing will not help you lose weight.
With that kind of working out, you need to be getting in a minimum of 180 grams of protein a day. The minimum without working out is over 90 grams a day. The 30,60, 90 rule is to accommodate bodies that are still healing and not doing much else. If you are building muscle, you need the 90+ base and additional protein to fuel the repair of those muscles. If you are weight training, 190 might not be enough.

Hello, Michael,
Please use caution if you are doing any weight training. Small weights only at this point. We are very susceptible to hernia after abdominal surgery.

Thanks all for your feedback - I can't imagine getting more than 90 grams per day unless I drink 2 shakes a day but maybe I should? My trainer is amazing and not a muscle head but I really don't want a hernia and I do push myself sometimes - where would I get the hernia in the bowel? I just don't want to be flabby. .On the good news I am 8 wks today and just went below 200 at 5'9" I thinking hoping 30 more to go but it's coming off at about 1+ lb./wk down 48 total 37 since surgery!

Your weight loss will naturally slow as the months go by. It will slow even more for you if you are starving your muscles of protein. You could also be damaging your heart and lungs.
You can get a hernia anywhere in your abdomen. A lot of cutting went on in there. Many people are given lifting restrictions for the first few months of 5-10 pounds.
Excessive exercising now won't do a thing to prevent excess skin. Muscles can only firm up what is under it. Whether you end up with excess skin depends on many factors: the amount of weight you've lost, any prior damage done, your age, and genetics. And whatever amount of shrinking your skin will do, it will do in its own time. Nothing you do will speed up the process.

Michael, no amount of exercise is going to help with excess skin. And at not even 8 weeks out, you should not be exercising except for walking. Or maybe you want to end up back in the hospital.
THIS IS NOT A RACE.
You must eat protein. Must.
You have little energy because you had major surgery recently and you are losing weight very rapidly.

Michael, this business about pushing yourself really scares me for you.
To some degree, all of us who have been obese are at risk for hernias. Anything that increases pressure in the abdominal cavity puts us at risk. Add to that your abdominal surgery, which consists of rerouting your intestines and openings made in the muscle wall -- all of which are still in the healing phase. You are over exerting yourself too soon, you say you are pushing yourself in lifting weights...and not taking in enough protein to compensate for the exertion. Muscles become weakened by poor nutrition. You are a textbook hernia waiting to happen.
Please listen. Just walk for a few more weeks and increase your protein -- drink shakes. whatever. Your personal trainer may be great at what he does, but he is probably not a licensed physical therapist who is aware of the risks you are taking right now in your condition. Hernias are HORRIBLE. Definitely not worth the risk.

Michael, You are too funny! I'm glad you did because I definitely learned from your posts and the replies so thank you!
I also feel better knowing we're so close on surgery dates and share similar eating abilities. You are correct, the angels on this site are wonderful. I'm so itching to get back to playing tennis but this thread tells me it's still too early. Maybe I'll wait until 3 months post-surgery, that's only 5-6 more weeks.
Have a good one Michael and Angels! (Can you tell I like the name you gave the vets on here?) Kelly

Kelly - so sorry for hijacking your thread - thanks as always to the ANGELS on this site and your great advice Mike But, you're still going to ignore us, right? According to this article you are a bumfiddler : mentalfloss.com/article/58036/50-words-sound-rude-actually-arentTo bumfiddle means to pollute or spoil something, in particular by scribbling or drawing on a document to make it invalid. A bumfiddler is someone who does precisely that.
