Last night when sleeping I started having a pretty sharp and significant pain that was just left of the knob at the bottom of the sternum plate (my left) and this was when I was sleeping on my right side. When I rolled over the sharp pain subsided but in general my upper abdomen still hurt and is still causing discomfort now. It isn't severe right now but enough to cause discomfort.
Anyone have any idea what might be in that region that would cause discomfort? If I eat too much I often feel like I have a ton of bricks sitting in this general area but then it goes away after going to the bathroom and a little time for things to pass through. At those time it feels almost like something is stuck in my duodenum, at least that is what I imagine.
FYI - I am passing gas and pooping.
Right now I am not in enough discomfort to go to the Dr or ER, but if it doesn't get better later on or if it gets worse I will....in the meantime just looking to see if any of you experienced anything similar and might have any ideas.
Haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary.

Though I have no idea what this pain is from, I just wanted to say, I hope this goes away requiring no visit to the doctor or ER! I wish I could help as you've been very helpful to me...

I am starting to wonder if this is my esophagus and Barrett's acting up. We can have an upper endoscope, right? Just can't really go beyond Pylorus? I am supposed to have an upper endo every year but didn't last year as I was having the DS and new Doc would be in there already, so it is probably time to have a scope.

Call your doctor.

I would contact your surgeon if this is persistent. If you google an image of the human body - you have spleen, stomach and pancreas. I believe you can have a scope but involve your surgeon. Dr. Greenbaum gave me a card that states if anyone needs to perform an endoscopy they are to call either him or Dr. Wasser. So I wouldn't do this without my surgeon knowing.
I hope your pain is resolved.

I will agree with NYB about step one is to call your doctor. Reaching for straws from my own experiences, and I am not an expert. I did experience a similar pain a month ago, and the next day passed a kidney stone the natural way, thankfully without major pain - I got lucky it didn't have any really rough edges... this time. I am going to see a urologist this week concerning this issue. I also have some pains that seem to go away post-poop, and have wondered about bile duct issues, as I have seen that is a common problem for some DSers. Hopefully for you, this too shall pass.

I scheduled an appointment with my GI for tomorrow afternoon and tentative scope on next Friday.
I passed a stone at 3 weeks post op DS and it had me puking and really bad lower back pain, so this one is different...not that it couldn't be a stone. My surgeon is in the same building as my GI and I know they consult so I will make sure everything is okay with doing a scope before having that completed.. If anything gets worse tonight I am not one who hesitates to go the ER, so no worries there and thanks.

I am concerned and hope this is something that can be addressed quickly for you. Pain sucks.

I don't expect anything wrong to be found with the gastro plumbing, but I do need the upper endoscope to make sure my Barrett's is still in check. I will let you know what I find out (probably nothing until the endoscope is completed)

Good luck with the doc tomorrow. I hope they can find out what it is. You know I had a scope and I told the doc I had a DS and he is really good, so I didn't have any problems.
I'm assuming you have had your gallbladder out. Right? If not it could be that.
Let us know what you find out. Hope the pain isn't too bad. Hang in there.

My personal opinion is that just the way our guts are configured, could be feces in the large intestine exerting pressure on other things that may have been routed in front of or behind it. You've complained about this pain before, unless this is different that what you have described before.
A trip to the doc, and endoscope, and maybe an xray may clear up whats happening.
good luck!

Yep GB out several years ago.....thsnks....I think I get a partial obstruction from time to time and it eventually pushes through. The main purpose of today's visit is esophageal issues I have been having and side benefit is the intestinal check out

Wish you didn't have to wait so long. Are you still having pain? moderate pain, but not anything I can't live with. If it gets worse I know where the ER is at.

Just read this morning. Hoping your esophagus checks out well. My mom has this same dx. Can be so serious, so I'm glad you stay on top of yours.:-)

Just read this morning. Hoping your esophagus checks out well. My mom has this same dx. Can be so serious, so I'm glad you stay on top of yours.:-) Thanks Melanie. BTW I was glad to hear things are looking up for you (think I forgot to say so in your post). I had the barium swallow study this morning and that wasn't much fun. Much harder this time than pre ds. The volume of barium I had to swallow was difficult as I still can't "chug" much liquid. My digestive system is also irritated now. Hopefully this shows something treatable as I am starting to get worsening dysphagia. It was just difficult swallowing pills the last several weeks and now food is starting to get stuck a little at times as well. EGD on Friday so I am hoping that will stretch the esophagus a bit and might help the dysphagia. My voice has been weak since surgery and now with dysphagia. .well those two things in light of my Barretts has me a little worried about that mother effer whose name I shall not mention.

Well, if it was a blockage, the scan with contrast would have shown it and you'd be in surgery, not home.
I hope they find what this is quickly and that it is something easy to fix.
Good thoughts to you!

Good thoughts to you! This wasn't a CT with contrast.....just a barium swallow which is jus a series of xrays as you swallow barium. The pain I was having when I started this post is gone so I am not worried about a blockage now.....The post kind of morphed into something else and this test today was for dysphagia and the EGD on Friday is to make sure my Barretts esophagus hasn't turned to something bad. Thanks for the good thoughts.
