With most of our surgeons dietary information tending to learn toward the RNY, I wanted to run a quick list by the vets of foods to stay away from for 3 months according to the general guidelines provided in my surgeons binder. Please weigh in on whether I should be avoiding these foods. Thanks!
Some of these seem appropriate to avoid for a few months but others give me pause since I've seen posts to the contrary:
Dry, hard, chewy foods (does this mean no jerky?) Bread, rice, pasta High fiber cereal Nuts Seeds Popcorn Chips Stringy fruits such as oranges and pineapples Fibrous fruits such as honeydew, apples, pears Corn Steak or pork Fried foods
Obviously some of these are just carbs and I need to be focused on protein right now so that just goes without saying. Also I really have not felt a desire for carbs at this point so the carb stuff isn't an issue.
The things I'm most curious about is the nuts, steak (I'm really craving this), pork, corn (my husband keeps cooking yummy food that seems to always have some corn in it and so far I've just ate something else but wondered if a little bit that is in a pot of other foods is okay).
I'm getting my fluids in daily and am averaging around 80 proteins a day. My doctor cleared me for regular diet last week and cleared me for whole pills as well.

Trial and error….have a little bite of steak, chew very thoroughly…see how you do.

Honestly I thnk this list is pretty accurate. My impression is this isn't as much about weight loss as it is about things that can potentially injure your sleeve early out. Most of these things are tough and fibrous. or small enough to maybe compromise the staple line. I would have had a problem tolerating most of these things in the first few months. Steak was too tough for me until about month 5-6. You can try a bit and see how you do. When ready, start with something more tender like a filet. You can also try beef jerky and see how you do. Just a bite or two. Fried foods were difficult for me because of the breading. And too much fat early on would give me oil slicks. Note - this ALL changes in due time. I can eat anything on your list right now without a second thought. They key is to progress your diet slowly, making sure you tolerate things by trying them with just a few bites. And if you dont, know that it changes. Just try again in a few weeks.

Exactly. Just try - and go very slowly. Have you tried ground beef? That might be easier to start with.

NYB, I've had ground beef several times now without any problems. So far I've not had any problems with any of the foods I've tried. I guess food boredom is happening currently so was just looking at my options. I've been craving steak since about 4 days post op. I'm hoping it's almost time to give it a try.

I think I'll try a little steak tomorrow. If it doesn't sit well I have plenty of kiddos that will be more than happy to take it off my hands. . (Little vultures)

I ate steak and all kinds of pork quite early on - I stuck with the very fatty, tender cuts...rib eye steaks, pork shoulder roasts, pork butt chops. I cut into small pieces and chewed well. I also ate a lot of dark meat chicken. Ground beef was tough to digest, I found.
I loved fatty and fried foods, but no breading
I stayed away from all of those carbs listed - fruits and vegetables took up a lot of valuable room I needed for protein and liquids
Try in small amounts and see how things go for you.

Chew everything very well. My surgeon's advice is to not swallow anything that cannot pass through a drinking straw. Everything is still swollen and healing even though you feel fine. Jerky? I would be very careful.

Ditto what everybody said...just go slow. Try a bite of steak...wait before you take bite two...see how bite one sits on your tummy. I ate ground meat early on and didn't have a problem with it. Now eggs were another matter...of course I eat them all the time now...just didm't sit right with me. You just never know.
Most on the list are fibrous and you don't want to use that real estate with low protein...so I sure would avoid them for now.
Enjoy the DS, sounds like you are doing well.

I find that a very reasonable list for someone who is only three weeks out.
If you want meat, try a good filet mignon. Dip it in melted butter. Tiny bites chewed well.
Dark meat chicken (legs & wings) slow cooked in liquid.

The first meat, other than tuna I tried to puree (gagged me) was crispy microwave bacon. Very, very low density and as stated by .... I chewed it to paste. Bacon has so much protein for such low volume of food, it has been a huge source of protein for me.
Steak and other solid meats were extremely difficult to eat for a good 4-5 months. It has only been a few months that I can enjoy a hamburger. ..ground hamburger was very hard as well. I mince it up very fine when cooking and go with the lean stuff to avoid the gristle filler....then add taco seasoning for tacos or make sloppy joes. To get the sauce type consistency I like...makes easier to eat.

I would be more experimental after 2 months but dry dense meat took me quite a while to get used to. I did liquids and then pureed till about week 4. The next 2 weeks still things like tuna salad and chilli that I knew would be easier going down. Dense meat did take a long time to get used to although restaurant steak was more tender than what I cook for myself. I never had much trouble with fried foods.
