Hi,
Since you've all been so helpful with my other questions, here I am again. LOL. Hope you're having a good Sunday.
1) I'm five weeks post-surgery tomorrow. I'm doing good with protein, about 90 yesterday (usually 65-85). Fat was 28 (I do try to eat high fat), carbs were 24, and my calories were 690 (they're usually 400-570.) This is all on MyFitnessPal. I get in over 64 ounces of fluid a day. My concern is, and I know we're not supposed to count calories, but I'm afraid I'm getting in too few. Is this okay or should I try and change something to get in more calories? Remember, I'm not counting them but can't help but see them on FitnessPal.
2) I'm still tired and my legs are weak. Is this normal at five weeks? I'm feeling good and barely need to take Tylenol or Advil, I just get tired so quickly. I'm walking at least three times per day and am doing things. Like Friday night, we went to Barnegat Lighthouse where there's a concrete walk along the ocean. We had a great time, but I had to sit down and take a rest several times (not that my husband minded, we're boaters and it gave him a chance to see all the different boats going in and out of the inlet.) Neither of us attempted to climb the lighthouse. He's down 17 pounds since my surgery, by the way! On a nice note, he stopped to hug me on the beach later that evening (it was our 27th anniversary) and he was like, "WOW, I can overlap my wrists around your back!" He proceeded to show me where he used to get to on his hands and where he can get to now. I was cracking up!
Thanks again for all your feedback I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Kelly

Being tired at 5 weeks out is very, very normal. You had major surgery. It takes a long time to feel okay again - a long time. Plus the rapid weight loss. Take it easy on yourself….I was exhausted for 3 months.
Don't worry about calories. Just steadily increase your protein and keep up your fluids.

Kelly IMHO, 5 weeks out from surgery you're still recovering from major surgery. I think you're diong well to be getting in 60-90g protein for where you are, just push to get more and more each day. I think your fatigue may have something to do with intake, but much more to do with the fact that you're still recovering from surgery. I dont think I felt like myself until about month 3. When I was 5 weeks out from surgery I still wasn't able to return to work. It sounds like you already have a handle on the things to watch out for that migth cause problems at your stage: Hydration and Protein. Do you have any other signs of dehydration? Are your lips chapped, are you dizzy, is your blood pressure high (or low when you stand up?)? If you're eating that much protein, and you are well hydrated, I would keep pushing the protein and fluids, and give it some time. A full body hug from your husband sounds like a great start!

It is very true that we don't get enough calories in the beginning, and that is one of the reasons for being tired and weak. That being said if you are getting your protein and liquids in, you will be okay. As you go on you will increase your protein intake and some may disagree but I would increase you carbs a little (not a lot and not at expense of protein) as it can give a little energy boost. I ate cream of wheat early on because it was easy for me to eat and gave me a little sustenance. ..This was first few weeks and was very small volume mixed with half and half...but it helped me get through first month.
You seem to be doing well and what you are experiencing is definitely normal.

You sound normal to me, Kelly. It takes time to recover fully from the surgery. Don't worry about the calories at all. Continue to increase the protein grams as you have been doing, and keep up your fluids. Your stats look great!

Given you are at 5 weeks I think you are doing great. Too soon to worry about calories so hydration and protein for now. I'm with Scott about the carbs. The levels people usually try and hit while losing are under 50 and most of us mean that to be just about 50. Especially this early out I wouldn't even worry about carbs. A lot of people do mashed potatoes the first couple of months because it is one of those things that go down easy.
At 5 weeks I still l wanted to take an afternoon nap so from my experience just roll with it and let yourself heal. Congrats.

Thanks so much for the great feedback and reinforcement. I feel MUCH better now knowing the fatigue is normal and the low calories are okay. Joanne, so far I do not have chapped lips or any blood pressure issues but thanks for letting me know what to look out for. Each day, with the help of all the questions and answers on this board, I feel a little more confident with the DS.
Thank you, all, for your wonderful input!
Have a great week, Kelly
