What advice/experience can you share with me beyond watch your carbs regarding gas - I'm 6wks out and I go though bouts oh horrendous gas - I'm still trying to find the cause but would like advise if this will be life long and/or anything to mitigate it. Yesterday it was so bad regarding VOLUME that the noise was like something from the movies! Sometimes malodorous sometimes like a tire blow out - tell me this is temporary please

I'm sorry to hear this! I'm finding that I'm a little noisy in the bathroom, as well. I'm one week behind you. I don't know what I'll do when I go back to work except maybe explain it to my secretary (we've been together for 16 years, I can tell her anything!) I guess it wouldn't help with gas smells but I've started using Poo-pouri in the bathroom. I can't believe the darn spray works! My husband was cracking up because he tried it and couldn't believe it worked even on him! I hope the noise subsides and the air smell does, too. Waiting to see what some of the veterans say...

You can try eliminationg things to see if you're not tolerating something well. Typical culprits are carbs, dairy (especially milk), and sugar alcohols.
But you're still recovering. Things will settle down. Don't get discouraged, and certainly don't bec concerned thinking that the way your digestive system acts now will predict the way it will be long term.

I'm not sure what will help this early out. I had tremendous gas until I figured out I came out of surgery lactose intolerant. It didn't help that my Doc's post-op diet suggested adding dry milk into everything for the added protein.
I use Ozium and Citrus Magic to help with the bathroom smells. Ozium works better for me but it leaves a chemical smell in the air for a while.
You might try some of the OTC stuff. It seems to be hit or miss for people. Things like gas-x, or beano for the gas. Devrom to help with the smell. Pro-biotics to help over-all.

Thanks - I took my vitamins yesterday with a glass of milk and that may have done it - all quiet on the southern front today - it's funny how I just get no pleasure from food anymore - it's more of a hassle to eat and it takes sooooo long to eat properly (slowly/small bites). I can barely get 1/4 c of food in any more I'm extremely uncomfortable - however my eyes and brain haven't synced with my stomach yet. 1/4 cup seems so little but - that the safety zone for me.

Mike - it had to be the milk. Milk has so many natural sugars - look where the carbs are coming from. I cannot drink milk.
Walmart has Ozium in automotive department and now it is in our bathroom. I had a hard time finding it in Walmart and the man asked me what I needed it for. I replied to remove cigarette smoke from a car..... Of course I am not going to say.
Stuff works well.

Many DSers become lactose intolerant, including me. Try Lactaid brand milk.

Hello, Mike. I feel the same way. Eating can be a chore and my sense of taste has changed dramatically. It's a whole different ballgame. The result is that my focus is on other things in life besides food. I just eat what I need to eat and get on with the business of living! A little bewildering at times, but it's not a bad thing, really. I think it's what needed to happen in order for me to make changes and become more healthy.

Eating now is a chore that I need to do which is actually become a challenge - who would ever have thought I would find eating to be a chore? I want to be thin and healthy so I work out several times a week which is difficult when I'm not getting the calories in. I'm just getting back from a 6 mile walk.

Hi Mike...just wanted to point out that although milk/lactose intolerance may well be happening for you that it isn't the case for all ds patients. Milk products don't bother me at all other than to much heavy cream gives me the oil slicks. I couldn't do much fat early on as it bothered my system. BTW, most carbs don't bother my system at all. I am kind of the exception to the rule in that regard.
Question on the gas. Is it actually causing you pain or are you just more worried about the odor/noise? Gas is no biggie to me. I have never been one to let it rip in public but I just go the bathroom and have at it....often on the toilet because sometimes it is a little more than gas..but I am figuring that out to (when it is just gas or more).

M & M
I hear you on eating being a chore at the stage you are at, but believe me that goes away and you will again enjoy eating.
