Hey y'all. I finally figured out that whey is the culprit in protein shakes that causes me great distress. I bought some soy protein powder and it's OK- still a little grumbly but do-able.
I also found a drink concentrate in grape flavor by Proti (Bariatrix) with "Hydrolyzed Gelatin." I Googled, of course, and it's an "incomplete" protein made from the connective tissues of animals, most likely pigs. That's the only source of protein in this drink.
I am going to try it today. Is this a suitable source of protein for us, do you think? It's has 15 grams in each serving...
Thanks!

Good morning, teach. I don't think there is anything wrong with soy protein. The NUT told me avoid collagen protein, but of course she didn't say why.
There is a standardized method of determining just how complete, or incomplete the protein is. It is called the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). A complete protein has a score of 100. You can call the 800 number on the label of your protein package and ask for this number.

Hi Monica- I never heard of the PDCAAS. I will call them now. My question was not about soy protein, but the hydrolyzed gelatin, which, if I'm not mistaken, is the same as collagen. It's the connective tissue. I'll call the 1-800 number. Good idea! THANKS!

I used to enjoy flavored pork rinds especially since the protein count was so high. I found out sadly that it is not a protein that we can process. I still enjoy the crunch once in a while but know that it has no protein value. I imagine it is the same story with the collagen protein you are trying. The manufacturer is trying to sell it with an empty promise of nutritional value.

Teachermomolp, I also can't handle most protein drinks because of lactose intolerance to the whey. Try egg protein drinks. They are pretty available out there, too. If the soy is causing some gurgling, it could be a sensitivity to soy, or to sugar alcohols in the mix. Experiment to see what is the cause of the stomach gurgling. You can always go with an unsweetened drink, and add agave nectar and fruit for favors, or Sweet Drops, which are Stevia without sugar alcohols.

Mistercy, I tried J Robb egg protein shakes and they were just as bad. I'm not sure why, unless it had whey also. I'll have to check. I tried Unjury unflavored and that was just as bad. The drinks I found that do not have whey that don't bother me are the ones that have the hydrolyzed gelatin I started this thread about. I don't want to waste my small tummy real estate and calories if I'm not absorbing the protein. What are you using, if anything? I'm going to try "Carnivor" from GNC- it's a beef based liquid protein. I read it tastes like spoiled meat but it's only 4 ounces so maybe I can choke it down... so let me know what you are using! Thanks for replying!

I have always heard that we don't absorb collagen with our rerouted intestines but I'm not sure that still holds to something like the hydrolyzed gelatin you are asking about since the form is so different. you might look at a couple of the mfg web sites and see if there is anything there about Bioavailability.
As for the 4 oz of the other stuff. Some of the people that can't stand the smell of protein shakes do theirs in 4 oz and just hold their noses while they down it like a shot.
I wish I could be more help but I'm lucky and my stomach doesn't mind prot shakes as long as I can make them with water so they are thin (Optimum Nutrition 100% whey for me). If I am reading this right you are about 5 months out. I would just hold on to what you already bought and try them again in 2015. Tastes and tolerances can change over time. Not a help for you right now though.

In a supplement you require whey isolate protein or egg whites. Soy is ok but, less so. Until you can eat the full 90 daily grams in animal protein, these will do.

I am really frustrated. I cannot find a shake that I can tolerate. I am 5 months out and had about 80 grams of protein today- and that's it. I have room for nothing else. I guess that's good in a way but I just don't know how to eat more...
I am continuing my search!

My son just told me about a protein drink called Isopure at GNC. it's carb free and he said very good. (He's into nutrition.) He did say it's pricey for him as a 24 year old but he thinks it would be good for me. I had been using Pure Protein but it's now making me sick. I hope it works for you. Good luck!

That is the one I have been using. At Vitaminshoppe it is $54 for a big container. I double up on the protein for 50 grams of protein. I have tried the chocolate (favorite), vanilla and banana cream.

LOL I should have tried it when you first mentioned it! What's strange is he showed me pre-bottled drinks that don't get mixed at GNC. I wonder if they're the same thing, just pre-mixed. I'll have to ask when I go later today. He did say it comes in a chocolate powder but he thinks the pre-bottled are better for me. I see Dr. Greenbaum today and am hoping to progress to soft foods as I've been on puréed since my last visit. Thanks again for your recommendation, Cindy!
Enjoy your day, Kelly

Heya, just my 2 cents worth. For the first 2 years post op whey protein drinks made me horridly ill. The only protein drink I could take was Nectar (which I bought from Vitalady). Might be worth a shot.

LOVE the Nectar flavors! They make great cocktails.
