So, I am scheduled to have my DS with Dr. Ungson in Mexico on September 3rd but EVERYONE who knows (family and one friend) is hounding me about not going to Mexico because of the violence. So I scheduled a consult to go see Dr. Kim in Dallas for the surgery. The procedure is a $5000 price difference less travel expenses to Mexico so it's really only about $3000 more. I almost scheduled a sleeve with Dr. Kim 3.5 years ago so I know I like him and his demeanor and he is now on the vetted DS Facts list of recommended surgeons. I feel like I'm cheating on Dr. Ungson

You need to do what makes you feel comfortable. Have you already put down a deposit thou in order to get a surgery date? How do you feel about Mexico?

I have not put down the deposit. Luz was supposed to call me today and give me the bank account number to do the wire transfer. But I never heard from her today. I would rather stay here in Dallas so Dr. Kim sounds like a good option. Given that 1. He is now vetted with DS Facts and 2. He significantly lowered the price to a reasonable number, I may be sold!

I say go with the local guy...if he is going to give you the full DS...talk to him and make sure before you cancel your trip to Mexico.
Best of luck to you.

I've heard nothing but praise for Dr Ungson. I dont think you can make a bad decision, but think you are right for going where you feel the most comfortable.
I had a similar situation with my plastics. I had deposited and booked an airline ticket to Mexico for plastics with Dr Sauceda. In my pre-op appointment my PCP raised some valid concerns about my pre-disposition for blood clots, and managing that along with airline travel so soon after plastics. It gave me good reason to reconsider. I ended up having plastics closer to home, but as you said, by the time I added travel cost, more time away from work, etc. it wasn't ALL that much more. I think the difference was a little more than 10%. I also changed my plans and did my plastics closer to home.

You have to do what you have to do, but Hermosillo is no Tijuana or border town. It's focus is commerce, industry, and education. Jobs are plentiful and it is not a tourist town. I have never heard of a patient traveling there being a victim of a crime. No violence that I have heard of, either.
