Hey y'all, well surgery went well. Home, getting my fluids, walking and getting protein and vitamins. Everything but this dang drain, so it was draining just dandy, then today...well it looks like it has a clot inside where it should be draining. We got that loose, but it still seems not to be draining. It's oozing onto the gauze. So now my anxiety is in over drive? Should I call my surgeon, who is 4 hours away, or call my pcp, which won't be in til Monday, or go to the ER??? Or should I just chill out and see how it does til tomorrow? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did they show you how to empty the little bulb at the end of the drain? When you say you took care of the clot, did you squeeze the bulb before re-attaching it? You squeeze it to create a bit of suction so it pulls stuff out. I'd check the bulb, the connection, and clean the area first before you start worrying too much.
If all that looks right to you, you can call your surgeon. If it doesn't look infected (no smell, warmth, redness, or anything that starts to look different), I dont think you need to go to the ER. But you can call your surgeon and ask what he thinks you should do.

You also have to milk the tube. You can find the videos on You Tube. Grab a web cloth and slide it down the tube to move all the clots down to the bottle. I just had my tube removed 2 weeks ago. Is there puss at the site? Does it look like an infection? Is there a bad smell? If your are unsure, it can't hurt to call the surgeon.

If you are concerned call your surgeon. If you get his service, leave and message so someone will call you back. Ask them these questions.

And if there is any serious pain, swelling or unusually hot skin in the area feel free to call your surgeon at any time. Even at 3am.

Don't be afraid to call your surgeon but when I came home with the drain it seemed to leak as much into the surrounding bandages as it did into the bulb. As long as there is no smell and no signs of infection I think you will be OK. I eventually came to the conclusion that the stitch they used to hold the tube in place was just not right. For me it didn't stop draining until a day or so after they took the tube out.
