Hello everyone it has been a long time since I have posted on the forum. Since having my surgery over 2 years ago I have been losing a lot of weight. I originally started at 255 pounds and now I am down to 115 and thats on a good day. My veins in my arms are showing and my bones in my neck are sticking out. I cant stand to look at myself, I did not have insurance for a long time and just got some back, but it is not HIP medicaid which is the one that Dr. Roslin takes it is health first. I tried contacting doctor Roslin to see if I could come in but they stated i needed to have insurance therefore I basically was on my own. I would like to know if there are some protein shakes or anything that can help me to gain a little weight, I cannot drink any milk products or eat anything that contain sugar because I realized it will give me the runs and bad gas sorry I know TMI. And please don't think that I am ungrateful because I am not I love the DS I just know that I have lost too much weight and am continuing to lose no matter how much I eat which are basically still small portions at a time but it is constantly all day. I will go to my PCP doctor this week to get labs done to see how bad off I am I am also afraid of the results. Any and all feedback will be appreciated, Thank you In Advance.

Can you please keep a log of everything you eat and drink for a week, and post it here?

Hello its so nice to see your still here.. and of course but I think I have been eating bad because I noticed if I eat even half a slice of bread or any carbs I will have loose bowels and it will go on all day. So I know that can contribute to the weight loss, This morning I had 3 slices of Turkey bacon and two sunny side up eggs, I dont eat as much as I should but I eat small portions all day , this is why I am asking is there some type of supplement I can drink that can help me to consume calories that I may be lacking.

First you need to tell us what you are eating - keep a log of everything you eat, for a week.
I'm sure you need more complex carbs.
Have you tried taking immodium? Is it loose bowels or actual diarrhea?
You may need to talk to your doctor about taking Creon.
What vitamins are you taking - be specific, and list quantities.

Do you do protein drinks? I don't care for them personally but many on here do multiple protein drinks a day and they are 30 grams of protein for 8 oz. BTW, why turkey bacon? No need to eat low fat. Finally, as Joanne asked in this or your other thread, how tall are you?

Neither Roslin nor his nutritionist will be much help with nutrition or diarrhea issues -- I speak from experience. I have had horrendous problems with diarrhea since my DS, about 10 months ago (with Roslin), and my PCP and I finally determined that the problem is that I am just not really absorbing much of ANYTHING -- not protein, not fat, not carbs. The fact is, I eat masses of protein, so that doesn't seem to be a problem (meaning that my labs say I am not protein-defficient), but in general, yeah, I live in the bathroom. Creon (large doses) is definitely helping. I take three after meals and one or two after snacks, and am sleeping through the night for the first time since the surgery. Please talk to your PCP about trying that. Immodium (the caplets, not the liquid) has also been somewhat helpful.

Protein drinks are wonderful for people trying to LOSE weight. Why can't you eat REAL food instead of focusing on finding a perfect protein drink? Up your carbs, eat more FOOD, don't eat low-fat anything. You can increase protein on your own without adding in protein drinks. Have you been eating cheese? Deli meats? Nuts? Peanut butter? Cottage cheese? Eggs? Lots of other meats besides pork?

Thank You for your feedback I have an appointment with my PCP next week I will discuss adding Creon because I do eat steak fish and chicken a lot but continue to lose weight, I have been eating a half slice of bread and noticed that I cannot eat that at all or anything that has sugar in it. But as you stated I still have bouts of loose bowels. I have started today writing down what I eat and have eliminated bread completely, I want to see if that helps. I am looking into adding protein shakes or any type of shake I can tolerate which will help bring my weight up by a few pounds.

Hello Melinda I am not trying to lose weight I need to gain a few pounds and was looking for any shakes that may help me... I didnt know that protein drinks are to help with weight loss, I do eat steak chicken fish, I eat small portions but all day, I am now on my second piece of steak had two more sunny side up eggs and I drink crystal light i have always liked crystal light, I am noticing that I cannot eat certain carbs at all because it will cause me to go to the bathroom, such as rice, bread, pasta, even cheese will make me go and I cannot drink anything with milk in it. I am just not understanding why I am continuing to lose weight all I can come up with is all the bouts to the restroom because of the carbs.

Yes, I understood you were trying to GAIN. That's why I posted most of us used the shakes/protein drinks during the loss phases, or some of us use it to lose weight after the "window" of the DS. All protein diet I don't believe will help you to gain weight. The key is you must be able to add carbs. I think it's already been mentioned you need to get to a doctor that will put you on pancreatic enzymes like creon to help you hold on to the calories you are eating and not malabsorb so much. Carbs, some things with higher sugar content, those things cause us to gain the weight. Not adding more protein. When we want to lose weight, years after our DS, we increase the protein and decrease the carbs, so it would make sense to me that you might need to increase the carbs instead, see what I mean? Bathroom issues can be controlled (Immodium). I would work on getting carbs added to your protein, not finding ways to add even more protein in without increasing carb content into your diet.

I am sorry Melinda I misunderstood what you were saying... when I did have carbs in my diet it sent me straight to the bathroom even a baked potato, im scared to eat any of them with the fear of bathroom issues which will then lead to more weight loss. I will speak to my PCP about adding creon it will be amazing to be able to eat some carbs without the fear of havin to go to the bathroom. May I ask which carbs you eat? I even tried eating cookies, cake, candy, drinking soda anything high in sugar and straight to the bathroom and terrible gas.

You need to eat complex carbs. What you listed are simple carbs.

I found that eating small portions of complex carbs allowed me to tolerate them. Keep experimenting. Corn meal products, a little brown rice, a small amount of beans in chili, things like that can add up to slow and stop weight loss. I know because I gained too much on them! LOL Seriously though, good luck in finding the right balance. Many find that the DS weightloss suddenly comes to an end at two or three years.

Hello Monicca may I ask how do you take the Immodium and which probiotic do you use and lastly were you losing too much weight before taking them? I take 2 Immodium at the first sign of diarrhea. You can take up to 4 daily, but I have never needed more than the 2.
Culturelle is the probiotic I am taking, and I have not needed to take Immodium since I started it. I began taking the probiotic because EVERYTHING was giving me diarrhea. It has improved my ability to digest foods without getting diarrhea. Apparently, I was lacking some kind(s) of good bacteria in my digestive tract after surgery. This may help you digest some carbs without having so much trouble.

lovy, Monica is a new post-op. Her guts are still in the healing and rapid weight loss phase. You are going to have to experiment for yourself to see what works and what doesn't.
Try some immodium, add a probiotic, ask about Creon. But you must increase your complex carbs if you want the weight loss to stop.
What vitamins are you taking, and what quantities? Be specific.

Hi, Monica! I also have Health First. Consider going to Mt. Sinai - Dr. Herron. He has been excellent for advice, accepts Healthfurst, and I was even able to get my plastics approved by Health First, because of hernias. A number of us on the forums have switched to Dr. Herron, and are very satisfied with his care!

As others have said, if you continue to eat protein only you will continue to lose weight. You either need Creon (which will help you absorb more, which means weight gain) or carbs (complex is better). You've got to find the balance.
Have you had labs checked lately?

I don't think you need to see a surgeon. You need to work with your internist.
