Heard from Diane, she's had a really rough time, spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital via the Cleveland Clinic, but very hopeful they are at last getting to the root of her problem. She said she kept getting sicker (fevers, stomach pain, cough, nausea and extreme weakness) so she went to ER thinking she had pneumonia again. They did some more tests and said her left lung was collapsed and had some fluid in it and had a lot of fluid around that lung. Something was pushing her diaphragm clear up into her chest cavity which they found out later was two huge abscesses filled with infection. The next day she became septic so they sent her by ambulance to the ICU unit at Cleveland Clinic. They found abscesses and put drains in and started more medications, drained the fluid from around her left lung. The doctors reviewed an earlier CD of a CT scan done in April and said there was a small hole (leak) that they found that isn't on her current CT so they feel the hole self-healed and is now gone. I'm not sure if Diane means the hole was in her lung or the lining, but it closed so this is good. She said the has no more fevers or stomach pain, no more output in the drains so they'll come out soon. Now she's focusing on regaining her strength and trying to eat again. She said she'll be on strong antibiotics for another 2-3 weeks, and feels like finally, things are going in the right direction, cautiously optimistic. She's very worn out and has felt defeated, but doing better and ready to rally herself. She thanks you all for your thoughts and prayers, and she'll be back here when she's more recovered. Let's hope this at last is the end of this ordeal for her!

How did she get the hole? Was it from the surgery?
I'm glad she's on the mend and wondered where she was...I'm glad she's at the Cleveland Clinic and I hope she can really rally herself. Bless her heart...sending hugs to her.

That's great. It's good to hear they may be getting her past this. Cautiously optimistic is sooo much better than "we have no idea". Sending good thoughts and prayers.

Bless her heart...sending hugs to her. Ya, I wondered too, not sure of the origin of the hole, she said they noticed it was on her cd/film before and now it was gone. I asked her and hopefully she'll be able to share more details when she's able. I know your responses will mean a lot to not only her, but her sweet husband Frank and the rest of their close-knit family.

Update on July 15, 2014I heard from Diane, and it seems like she is in really good hands with the Cleveland Clinic, wish she could have been there from the start. She went for an additional 2 days at for more bloodwork and exams. She said of the two abscesses, the smaller one is healing so they removed that drain, but the larger one is not doing as well as they hoped, slower, so the drain is still in they think for another 1-2 weeks and it's very painful. They also said she had been leaking for a long time but it closed up on it's own. She has follow ups scheduled, she's on IVs for fluids, very strong antibiotics, nutrition, and heavy restriction - rest and only short walks. No lifting, pulling or exerting herself too much, no driving, or much activity. The clinic is saying it will take a lot of time for the infection to be gone and until it is they are watching her closely. Here's hoping that infection is GONE, and she makes a full, complete recovery and can at last put this ordeal behind her! She said to thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, they mean a lot to her.

Sharyl where exactly are/were the abscesses? On her lung, stomach, intestines?
It just floors me that other hospitals & dr's didnt figure this out with all her symptoms. There is no excuse for what she has had to go through.
I am so hopeful that this ordeal comes to a happy close, very soon.
Hang in there Dianne..you have made it this far and relief is on iysxwsy.

Yeah, pretty bad is an understatement that they MISSED all of this! Have no idea how/why. The explanation as she gave it is at the start of this thread, but sounds like the abscesses were on/near her lung; she didn't know where the hole/leak was but it closed up; the leak is what likely made her septic I don't even want to think what more could have happened to her if she wasn't getting the treatment she is now, just relieved she is and hopefully no long-term ill effects, just recovery.

There are lots and lots of incompetent physicians. Unfortunately this is so friggin true. How on earth these drs could have missed this is mind blowing. Thankfully it appears she is in good hands now.

While she still has a substantial amount of healing to do, I am for once relieved by the care she is receiving. After her long ordeal of being passed from hand to hand, how refreshing to be under the care of doctors committed to not letting go until she is healed.
I hope this lifts her spirits, too. Enough to get her through her long healing ahead.
When you speak with her again, please let her know that we are all thinking of her and wishing her the best.

I'm glad to hear DeeDee is doing better but it breaks my heart that after such a big decision and surgery, her joy is being so delayed due to this complication. Sending prayers and good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

To all, I know this will mean a lot to her, and her family! I will definitely share your words and thoughts. Diane's revision was very complicated due to her very old, messy VBG, and to be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all when she had a leak and these abcesses is heartbreaking. But she knows her old VBG had to be fixed, and we have to believe she WILL make a complete recovery! Keep the wonderful energy coming.
