OK, so will someone please post a list of a few brands of the shots of protein. I'm only 5 weeks out and really struggling with protein. I'd love to go out tomorrow and try these shots :-) !!! Thanks! Sheri, I picked up some shots at Walmart, Target and The Vitamin Shoppe this past weekend in the health food/nutrition aisle. The shots varied from 25 grams to 42 grams of protein per shot. Here are the three brands I bought (I'm still in the experimenting stage to figure out what I like): Pure Protein 25 Grams of Protein Shot www.pureprotein.net/pages/products.aspx?sku=050452Protein Bullet 42g Protein Shot Wild Berry www.amazon.com/Bullet-Nutrition-Protein-Shot-Berry/dp/B0033L4VT4New Whey Liq Protein 42 Grape www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=YQ-1006When I go to the health club to workout I'll just put one of the shots into a ziploc bag with a half a dozen ice cubes and throw it in my gym bag. They stay cold for at least two hours. Then I'll slam a shot right after my workout. Boo-yah! ;D

Thanks! AGREED. I am not loving shakes and some days I can get in 45+ grams of protein with food..others 70+..but its a struggle! I could use these shot thingies (IF they are palatable). Thanks in advance!

Thanks Dudette! I'm looking into it. Today I went to GNC (before i saw your post) and picked up a few to try as well. But I think going to Target or the Vitamin shop might be a good bet as well--so off I go tomorrow! Exalt!

Thank you for the great information dentongirl! Please do keep us posted on what you find out about the protein shots. I can definitely do fruity right now--Crystal Light has been a real go-to liquid for me, so I would love to have something I could mix with it.

There's a difference between egg protein and egg white protein. Egg white protein is the best for being almost tasteless. I can put it in a yogurt fruit shake and not be able to taste it at all. Warning: it is very expensive. I use the one from Jay Robb's at Whole Foods but it's worth the price. The last time I think I paid about $30 for a quart size or so. I agree about egg protein. It can make you gag. The whey powders are just disgusting. Egg white is the only one I use. Haven't tried it in anything hot, but I have mixed it with oatmeal or had a fruit shake with it. Good luck!

sunset1, I definitely going out to find some egg white protein--I tried those shots today and they were thick, too sweet, and I don't think I could have tolerated it even if I'd put in into some water. It was awful. So on to egg white protein it is!!!!

In the past I bought the Jay Robb egg white protein at Henry's but now that they've been bought out by Sprouts they may or may not still carry it. It was less expensive there than at Whole Foods. The Vitamin Shoppe also carried it.

I did try a few types and flavors of egg protein powder. 2 months ago, when I was 2 months out from surgery they made me feel too full. I like the juice protein drinks better, come in packets of 15g protein, I add 2 packets to 16 oz water bottle. Make up 6 at a time, ready to grab and go.
The shots are sold individually at our grocery stores in Michigan. Sams has small cases of variety flavors, or all fruit punch. Read the labels to see which ones are best.

I'm imagining a sort of tasteless powder I could put into oatmeal or cottage cheese or something like that. I'm really, really struggling to get the protein in.

Sorry Sheri, I wasn't very clear was I? It was the thick, overly sweet, fruit flavored tubes of protein that I was talking about. I couldn't stand them straight out of the tube but they weren't awful when mixed into some San Pelegrino sparkling water. The egg white protein that I tried came in either vanilla or chocolate. It wasn't my favorite so I went back to Champion and stuck with it.

I need to do some serious searching to see if there is a flavorless egg white protein--Shelly (Trixxy) said she used to use it a lot. I'd just love to know how well it mixes with other foods and can it be tasted. But I'll try the two tube shots I have left with the San Pelegrino. It might just go down! Sheri

Be very leary of protein shots that are gelatin-based. Gelatins (boiled out of tendons, cartilage, bones, etc) are substandard proteins for WLS patients in general and should be avoided. I haven't had a chance to research the ones listed, but a good rule of thumb is if they're clear and concentrated they're probably partially if not completely gelatin-based.

As an example, the primary protein listed for the Pure Protein shots (click on view product label on the link) is collagen, which is a gelatin base. That means you can probably kiss about 12.5 grams of those 25 protein grams goodbye right off the bat.

New Whey also lists collagen as its primary protein source. It's better than nothing at all, but whey-based proteins are superior on bariatric surgery patients. This is a case where the name can be very misleading. Even though it mentions whey in the name, it is not the primary protein source. Buyer beware. ALWAYS read labels.

I have yet to find one that doesn't have that gaggy protein taste/smell.
That said, the ones I gag on the least are Champion Nutrition Pure Whey. I don't like chocolate, but I can do the strawberry. Recently I bought French Vanilla Creme and that's as close as I've ever come to finding one that's palatable. My protein is MUCH easier to throw back with that one.
Lot's of people really like the Syntrax brand for mixing with crystal light. It has no milky texture like the more shake-like flavors in the chocolate/strawberry/vanilla/etc. categories. I tried the Roadside Lemonade, but I have to mix it with so much water to make it palatable, that I'd rather just have my 2 scoops of vanilla in the minimum amount of water and be done with it.
I hope you find something you like.

Nose plugs! It's the only thing I have found that helps me chug a protein shake. I keep them on even after I've chased the shake with a small glass of water just in case there is some residual liquid in my mouth. Try it! It works!
