Before my surgery, I was struggling mightily with blood-sugar levels that were completely out of control. I was on three different oral meds and huge doses of insulin, and nothing was working. What terrified me -- and ultimately prompted me to have surgery -- was that I could sense a myriad of small, sometimes tiny changes in my body that I knew were somehow a function of my diabetes. They ranged from my always-icy feet and dry eyes to -- and this I really couldn't understand -- a gap between my top front teeth that appeared and then very slowly widened. I assumed it had something to do with my gums, but…oh, to tell you the truth, I was so terrified of all these changes, and that seemed like one of the most minor. Which it was.
But the fact is that the gap is closing.
