I am not a coffee drinker but I know a lot of DS'ers that resume consumption fairly early out and even more that drink 1 or 2 protein coffees every morning. Having said that, you might want to hold off on the coffee since you are currently having trouble falling asleep at night as it is (as stated in another thread)...it might exacerbate that issue. Unless of course you drink decaf which would have no bearing. I drink hot tea every morning - (used to be caffeinated) - and have since about 10 days out with no issues. I had to switch to decaf due to my incessant insomnia which I had pre-DS and for some reason got worse post-DS.

Beyond! I have never in my life had trouble sleeping. I am finally getting 6-7 hrs sleep....only at the wrong times of day. A few hours during the day, a few in the eve, and a few at night I have to get my shit together before I go back to work!

I hear you! When you go back, between the weight loss and looking like you haven't slept in weeks, they might think you took a leave of absence to become a certified crackhead. LMAO!

When is a good time to reintroduce a cup of morning coffee? I seriously miss the warmth and the smell I was drinking decaf right out of the gate. Caffeine can be hard on a healing stomach and my surgeon restricted me from it for something like 6-8 weeks. But, decaf was fine and the main vehicle for my protein powder. You don't need caffeine, anyway. If you are tired, you need to rest not fight it.

A few hours during the day, a few in the eve, and a few at night I have to get my shit together before I go back to work! Perfectly normal. Early out I was sleeping at all hours around the clock. When you are tired, you need to rest. Your body is still healing and it needs sleep and rest to do that. If you are still sleeping so frequently, your body is not ready to go back to work.

I have no idea why you aren't taking it already. Were you told not to?

Coffee was on my Doctors list of acceptable food. I craved coffee from day one, and the smell was heavenly. Every time hubby had a cup, I would take a tiny sip, gross metallic burnt bean taste! Then, one day, it tasted divine.
Now I am a coffee addict. I drool over espresso makers, talk exotic beans, and experiment with cream, butters and coconut oil. I think I am having too much, but limit myself to five cups a day.
Coffee will come back, don't despair. Oh, and a bedtime cuppa puts me right to sleep.

Stop worrying so much about then but concentrate on now. You are barely a week out from your surgery. Sleep when you're tired. Every doctor's instructions are different. I didn't touch coffee for several months but that was a long time ago. All I can say is try it and if it doesn't bother you, great. If it does, wait a while and try it again. Not sure why you're not taking anything for heartburn. I was on something (can't remember what I was given) immediately after surgery.

Prilocec has been taken and heartburn is gone! Thanks! They didn't tell me to take it or not to take it, so I wasn't going to unless someone with experience told me it was ok to. Last night was the first time it gave me any trouble. I have been sleeping whenever I need to. That's fine and dandy now and I'm not worried about later as much as just thinking about later. Thinking about what my new routin will be and how it will differ. Oh Leonie!! Looooove coffee too! I used to love to hind my own beans and mix them! Miss that smell. That's so cool you are so into it. I've never had exotic beans

I started on omeprazole in the hospital. and contuniued it for many months. I rarely have to take it now..
On the coffee subject, I can't drink BLACK coffee any more, I have to have heavy cream and a tbsp of sugar in it to drink it comfortably. (and now i LOVE it this way..)
I didn't do so well with hot drinks for 6-8 months, just always bugged my stomach, luke warm was about as warm as a liquid as i could drink comfortably. I could eat hot food fine, just not hot drinks.

Amy, heartburn/reflux is very common for DSers. If I were you, I'd take 20mg in the morning and 20mg at night. When your weight stabilizes (like 2 years from now), you'll drop to 20mg at night and see how it goes.
FYI, prilosec is available OTC, and in generic form.

Just got back from my 2 week checkup. Apparently I was supposed to be taking the prilocec all along. Not sure how I missed that. Oh well will move on with it from here.
He said the pain in my abdomen is from the robot and there's not particular reason that one is sore and the others are not. It's just got irritated and the others did not. He said to take some Tylonol. I stopped on the way home to get some. Swallowed one then the other about 10 min later with no issue. Feels funny sitting in my stomach though.
I am going to attempt some cottage cheese tonight! So excited!

I remember the excitement of my first real food bites, nothing tasted so good as the turkey/cheese roll-up! Until it didn't about a week later, when I couldn't stand the taste of processed food, and still can't. I LOVE cottage cheese, and still do, always one of my favorites and was glad it agreed with me. As for coffee, I loooove coffee, the smell, the ritual of it, whole thing. My post-op headaches were also due to caffeine withdrawal But otherwise? The smell made me nauseous, I couldn't drink it for months! And yes, caffeine is very hard on a healing stomach, so I had planned on decaf anyway. But it was months literally, before I even wanted it, like over four. But eventually resumed drinking it regularly and still do. I'd recommend decaf if you really have a craving, so many good ones available now, I don't notice the taste difference. And you can always add a nice fat bomb of heavy cream into it to make it taste yummy and get a good dose of fat. I know Leonie has sworn by her protein coffees, me, not so much

I have been sleeping whenever I need to. That's fine and dandy now and I'm not worried about later as much as just thinking about later. Thinking about what my new routin will be and how it will differ. There is no such thing as "routine" for quite some time. Mostly it will be "go with the flow" as your body decides day by day what it likes or doesn't like, whether it wants you to eat often that day or has no appetite at all, whether it wants to poop twice in the morning or several times during the day, what gives you painful gas and what doesn't. Everything is subject to change and fluctuation. Don't worry about it. Just be prepared for it to happen and don't be alarmed by it. Still I can go off Prilosec and be fine for months then BAM, I'm back to needing two doses a day without any change in my diet. It just happens.

I sure hope my DS plays nice though Learn how to make cream cheese pancakes, the savory version. SO easy, and while you'll never get them confused with bread, they are delicious and a great bread substitute. You'll be able to have bread again, later. I also used low carb tortillas in my early post op time for my morning egg 'n cheese, a quarter/half of a small one, threw it in the pan with the butter, and then on my plate, egg 'n cheese on top. Deconstructed very tiny breakfast burrito

Ohh those both sound yummy!!!
I start puréeds now. That means I can have anythinf mashed up to a puréed state right? Meat? The cream cheese pancake? Not that I am going to right away, but over the next 3 weeks I'm sure I can progress right?

Amy you don't have to puree stuff - you can just eat soft foods, like scrambled eggs, egg salad, tuna salad, tofu, cottage cheese…And you can eat other soft foods as long as you chew really thoroughly.
Make sure you are eating unsweetened peanut butter.

Puree doesn't have to mean actually pureed - it means soft foods. Cottage, egg salad, tuna salad - those are the consistency of pureed food.
And you are already eating some cheese, peanut butter…and it was fine. Eat some eggs - poached, scrambled….melt some cheese into the egg….
You just said above you had cottage cheese, and a little cheddar, and you were going to have a poached egg.
Amy you need to try to calm down, keep your head on straight, use common sense. One step at a time.

What do you mean calm down and keep my head on straight??? I think I'm doing ok? I did purée the cottage cheese and I let the cheese melt in my mouth so I didn't actually swallow anything except liquid.

You can just eat the cottage cheese - just chew it well before you swallow it. You can eat soft foods. You can eat a soft-scrambled egg or a poached egg - you don't have to puree.
For me - I'd rather starve than eat pureed meat.
Tuna salad, egg salad - just chop everything fine and chew.

Hi Amy, I made a goal for myself that as soon as I was taking all of my vitamins that I would let myself have coffee again. I love coffee so much that this worked as a really great incentive to stop dragging my feet and just do it! I have noticed that when I drink a lot of coffee on any given day I get less protein in because the half & half keeps me full for a while. I should probably try some of the protein coffee recipes but that just sounds so gross to me!
