I was an "out-of-state" DS revision. It is (past) time for my 3 months labs to be drawn. My surgeon emailed me a form to take to my Dr, hospital or lab center to have the labs done. I noticed on the form it says INSURANCE MAY NOT COVER THESE. My questions are:
Did any of you NOT have your labs covered? Where did you go to get your labs drawn? And....I've had some of theses labs already done by my PCP ( CBC) so do I still need these drawn again??
Thanks for any help you can give me. All the vits and labs are so confusing to me!

Labs have always been covered for me -- two different insurance companies over the past 11 years. My lab has a note on the bottom:
DX Post Op Care V58.49; 579.8; 573.9; 280.0; 268.9; 264.1; 264.9; 265.1
These are insurance codes. I'm fortunate to have really good insurance so I'm only responsible for small co-pay.
I simply take the order from my doctor to the local lab (I currently use LabCorp) and they fill the order.
I know some people don't continue to use their surgeon for various reasons (I do but until recently I didn't have a PCP). You can get your PCP to order the labs for you.

Hey there, usually your PCP handles the orders for your labs and you should use the lab template posted here as her guideline of what you need taken and don't let her try to talk you out of any it! They look at us like we're nuts, but we know what we need tested. Mine is covered by insurance too and I have them done by a company called LabCorp which is right across the street from Verdugo Hills Hospital. You should be able to have them done in a similar type place. Here's the link to the lab template: weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/8800/lab-template

My PCP orders the labs I wish. I simply give her the list and go to the lab to get them drawn and my results are uploaded directly to an online medical chart that I have access to.
Labs have always been covered by insurance and the following ICD-9 codes are checked:
579.3, 269.3, 275.4, 269.8, 268.9, V78.0, 252.02, 281.1, 244.9, 286.9, 280.90

My surgeon sends me a lab form all filled out. I went to a local lab because I am four hours from my surgeon. They did tell me that insurance is sometimes not paying for vitamin d checks - and if that was denied I had to pay $80 for the test. Otherwise everything I have ever had drawn has been covered.

Either my PCP or my hematologist run whatever I want them to. All my labs have always been covered fully. I have good health insurance.
I haven't seen my DS surgeon in many years.

I talked with my PCP about labs and he just rolled his eyes at some of them saying they weren't on the form they use to request blood work. I'm lucky that the hospital I had my surgery at will do all the labs. I haven't had a problem with insurance paying for anything. I think they just code using some number for "looking for deficiencies" but it all happens behind the scenes for me.

Ok THANK YOU all for your replies! I see my PCP on Tuesday so I will take this info with me. Hopefully she will order the tests I need!

My surgeon gave me my lab slips and I just go to the hospital here to have my blood drawn. I also had surgery out of state. My pcp orders anything else I need. My insurance only pays 80% of my labs which leaves me more then enough to pay through out the year.
Good luck, Trish

Ok THANK YOU all for your replies! I see my PCP on Tuesday so I will take this info with me. Hopefully she will order the tests I need! No, not hopefully. She WILL order the tests you request or you will find another pcp immediately. This is not optional. "These are the labs I need to be drawn and I'll also need a hard copy of the results from the lab when they come in. Thank you." End of story. Make sure your surgeon's list includes everything on this: weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/8609/vitalady-labs-targetsIf not, add what is missing. In fact, if it does not match the above list, you have no need of your surgeon for any of this. A surgeon's expertise is cutting and the initial healing of his work. Longer term nutrition and vitamins are not something that most are adequately schooled in to provide you with safe advice.

Ohh ok THANK YOU Kel! This can all be so confusing. I printed out the lists you suggested and I will take them Tuesday and have my PCP write an order for them. I will tell her I HAVE to have these done!! Thanks again!

I call my surgeon's office and they email me the lab orders every year. If I want to call and discuss them with anyone I can, but I always get a copy sent to myself, then I take copies to my hematologist, endocrinologist and my primary care. I haven't had to "see" my surgeon in many years. I have called and had phone appointments with his nutritionist though, who I actually LOVE to talk to and she knows her stuff (rare I know!).

I changed PCPS for the same reason, don't love the one I have now, don't have a close rapport; but he's in the same hospital/medical complex as my surgeon, and understands why I need what I need and writes it, I handed him my lab sheet, no questions asked.

Does your pcp have a nurse practitioner in his office? It doesn't matter who writes the order, as long as all the labs you need are included. You're going to be tracking them and making any adjustments yourself. The only thing you need your pcp's office for is to write them and provide you with a hard copy of the results.

I'd fire that PCP immediately - as if it's not his/her job to take care of you???

Melinda, Dr Elariny has a new dietitian and I think she's going to be really good for us. Her name is Tej. She seems to be really interested in DSrs and their labs. At the first support group, she spent about an hour and a half just picking Sharon G's and my brains about labs and vitamins. --gina
