I am almost 8 weeks post op and have noticed that my shins are sore .... Almost feel bruised but there is no physical sign of bruising. When I get in bed at night, I climb in on my knees and they feel sore too. Has anyone experienced this?
I have been taking my vitamins regularly and am getting my water in. Protein has still be a struggle.
Thanks!

Hi Melanie, I haven't experienced this specifically; but I did notice all kinds of what I called 'compensatory' aches and pains, from having to sleep in strange positions, the overall healing. See how you do in the next few days-week, if it gets any better.

I had something similar after my massive incisional hernia repair. I was freaked out it could be blood clots -- but in my case it ended up being some benign swelling in my legs that went away after I got rid of the excess fluid from surgery. Once the swelling went down the soreness went away. If your legs look swollen and tender have your doc evaluate them. Otherwise...I'm not sure, but I hope you feel better!
I think Sharyl is right on target too, could be movements you don't normally make?

What were your most recent labs? Somewhere in the recesses of my mind, I seem to remember leg pain having a magnesium connection. Or was it muscle? In any event, check your labs.

You've lost more than 30 pounds in less than two months since your surgery. Losing weight changes the way we stand, changes how we compensate for carrying that weight. If you had very chubby feet, you'll lose the cushion on the bottom of your feet. Your thighs won't be spreading your legs apart, changing the way you walk. If the pain gets too bad, go see your pcp. This is not something for your DS surgeon. But, otherwise, don't worry about it and prepare yourself for even more adjustments as the pounds and inches fall off.

This may not be the cause for you but I suffer from this when I'm not hydrating enough or I'm not taking my magnesium citrate. Hope it gets better soon, verily it's annoying and painful at times.

Yes, I believe it was magnesium citrate that I was thinking of. Are you supplementing with that, and are you following Vitalady's recommended list for DSers? If not, it's a good place to start, then tweak your amounts according to your labs. Are you charting your labs on a spreadsheet? If not, and you want one, there is one right here:

weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/8800/lab-templateI have been following my surgeon's plan not vitalady- and it does include magnesium. I understand the value of the vitalady plan and service - but I am just 8 weeks post IP and won't have second labs drawn till my 3 month appt. At that time, I am going to examine if what I have been doing is working for me. If things are trending down, I will make adjustments - and look into her plan more thoroughly. Thanks for the link to a tracker - I will be using that! I also think that some of it is what goodkel said - my body is changing. I was SMO - almost 400 lbs and now I am 330 lbs in 3 months ... So I know as things shift there could be weird aches here and there. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions!

Just wanted to post an update to this issue ... Still have bad pain in shins .... My WLS ordered some blood work to look at potassium, magnesium, my thyroid and protein levels - maybe a couple other levels - but not a full panel. Had the results sent to my PCP also because she is actually much more thorough than my WLS doc. She said all my levels are good - even protein ... Some of you know I have been worried about that level from lack of shakes - so good news there!! she was shocked that WLS doc didn't order a test that checks for clots since I am at such high risk (very long surgery and wasn't very mobile for a few days). So she went ahead and ordered that today just to be safe. She also wants an ultrasound done of my legs to see if there are circulatory issues. So - while I am not thrilled that this "could be" a serious thing .... I am glad that she is at least checking different angles. I think what it is though - after talking with her more - is my shoes. I have really good wide width shoes for support with my orthotics. I have to buckle them and after surgery it was hard bending over so I started wearing these "easy to slip into" but truly piece of crap shoes. She mentioned new shoes cause shin splints but said "those shoes don't look all that new". It was like a light bulb went off in my head - I explained that I had started wearing them for ease shortly before the shin pain started. So - gonna get back to my good shoes and see if that helps.

I would strongly recommend that you get on Vitalady's regimen.

The blood clot test came back elevated ... Not so high I have to go to ER - but high enough that I am going in for a Doppler ultrasound tomorrow.
Will keep you posted. Thanks!

Ooh- let us know. I went to the ER with calf pain and that Doppler test is easy. They got me my results within an hour. No clot for me but it was good to know. Hang in there!

Had the ultrasound which isn't bad ... Except I carry a lot of my weight in my thighs - so it was just personally embarrassing having a male run that ultrasound reader all over my large thighs. Ugh!! No modesty in the medical world. Good news - no clots!!! So thankful! Going to start using my very supportive shoes again and see if it improves over the next week. Otherwise, we are back to the drawing board to figure out the cause of the pain.
